Awkward & Awesome

May 26, 2011 filed under: awkward & awesome, my so-called life

Poppy Aged{source}

Blog idea “stolen” from Chrissy’s blog and originally started by Sydney at TheDaybook.

AWKWARD

  • The weather has gone from sunny to rainy to cold and back to warm. Very awkward, especially for May. I wouldn’t mind a little bit more consistency now.
  • The nerve of some people. Seriously. Cannot go into detail (it’s work-related), but oh man, do some people need a refresher course in proper etiquette.
  • This stupid cold that I’ve been nursing since Monday could really go away. Really now.
  • Waiting to hear from a friend that hasn’t been in touch for a while. I hope she’s ok.
  • I bumped into our old roommate at the hair salon on Friday. I hadn’t seen or talked to her in three years. That was definitely awkward and I mean, what are the chances? It was alright though. After the first initial shock moment, we  acted like civil adults and then both went our ways.

AWESOME

  • A three four day weekend is upon us!
  • This means: sleeping in!
  • Have  I mentioned that I love my iPhone? I ♥ MY iPHONE! I never thought I could love a gadget that much, but I do. Best of all, it basically keeps me in touch with my overseas peeps for free (well, obviously not completely for free, but I don’t have to pay extra.) No more international text messaging!
  • Related to my new gadget: I can’t wait for the case that I ordered to get here. It’s so freakin’ cute.
  • My parents will be here in exactly 2 months and 2 days. This is definitely AWESOME!
  • Also awesome is the time I’ll take off from work while they’re here. I haven’t had any time off since Christmas!
  • I was recommended this book called “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and I am dying to read it. It has great reviews and seems to be really inspirational. Has anybody heard of it or read it? I’ll get back to you on it when I have more information.

On new things

May 24, 2011 filed under: about me, love, this and that

This weekend was full of new things…

★ On Friday, I finally had an appointment at the hair salon. After letting my hair grow wild for, oh only 5 months, I desperately needed a haircut. Seriously, it was not even funny anymore. To add a little extra sunshine, I went with some highlights in the ends of my hair and it turned out just beautifully. It’s not quite as copper-tone-ish as the Instagram picture wants you to believe, but it’s pretty. I ♥ it!

★ On Saturday, I very spontaneously decided that it was time to upgrade my cell phone to… a white iPhone 4!  My old cell phone at three years was practically a “granny” and even though Internet-capable, not quite up to par anymore. (“Apps, what are those?) My upgrade had been due for over a year, but I had secretly hoped to hold out for the iPhone 5.
But, I am a girl and girls are weak (sometimes ;)). I had been eyeing the white iPhone 4 since it came out a few weeks ago, and my sister has one, too (and hey, we’re twins after all!), and it’s just so pretty, and to be honest: I just couldn’t wait any longer. I mean, who knows when Apple will finally announce the iPhone 5, right? That could be months and months away, for all we know.
No, the time was now. And it’s so beautiful (and I can’t stop thinking about all the new possibilities!)

★ On Saturday, I also got a surprise package in the mail. My dear friend Sanna sent me the “cassette tape”-necklace with the beautiful green bead that I am wearing in the picture. I had been telling her how much I loved the necklace in her Etsy shop and she just decided to send one to me – how sweet is that? Let me tell you, very, very, very sweet!!! ♥

★ We also went to Target and bought a new toaster. How we survived without a toaster for the last month or two, since I threw the old one out (it was just disgusting and totally gross, couldn’t even be cleaned to hold us over temporarily), I have no idea, but now we have a new one. It even has a “bagel” button. I guess, all new toasters now do. Fancy!

★ J got some new running shoes at Footlocker. How he manages to always pick out the high-end, expensive ones with blind determination is a mystery to me, but he does (and ok, they’re nice shoes, I admit it!).

★ One thing we didn’t get this weekend was  a new shelf for our living room. I still have two boxes of stuff sitting in the living room that has no place to go right now, so I am thinking it’s going to be another visit to IKEA next weekend. I mean, nobody would complain about that! (Kim, are you coming?)

Link Love

May 20, 2011 filed under: link love

I am going to introduce a new feature here on theinbetweenismine.com.
At the end of each week, I’d like to link up to my favorite blog posts of the week that I think YOU should definitely go and check out.

The Mayonnaise Jar Experiment by Kym (Travel Babbles). If you want to read about a simple theory about what’s important in life, this is the piece to read this week.

The One With The End Of The World, Or Whatever by Drea (Caffeinate me). I definitely wouldn’t want to be the one that survives with greasy bangs either!

The Summer of 2010 Vol.3 by Kim (notcrazyunwell). I can’t emphasize enough how much this girl means to me and she’s so brave to put her story out there for everyone to read. Show her some love.

The Tide of Friendship
by Sizzle aka (SizzleSays). This is a great post about the changes of friendship over the course of one’s life.

Blog Honesty Challenge by Emmy (EmmySuh). Does it seem like every other blogger’s life is perfect, because it’s all unicorns and butterflies on other people’s blogs? This is a post you have to read.

Battlefield by Emily (Emily Jane). Beautifully written piece about fighting your own inner battles.

Learning to coat all that is Hard and Hard to Admit in my life with a thick stew of Love & Storytelling by Hannah Katy (As Simple As That).

Things I love Thursday

May 19, 2011 filed under: about me, lists!, love, TILT

. {source}

This week I am loving…

… some new blogs that I started reading recently. I always love to find new blogs and meet new people.

… the fact that I don’t just have a kick-ass job, but also really cool co-workers. If I ever had to leave this job, I’d also leave the best work environment you could possibly ask for. Period.

… the white iPhone. OMG. It’s so pretty. I don’t think I can wait for the iPhone 5 now.

… trips to Ikea to pick out more stuff for our place. Having an Ikea 15 minutes from my house is a curse and blessing at the same time ;) I don’t have to drive far to go shopping there, but I am tempted to go there way more often that is good for my wallet.

… quiet evenings at home. I haven’t really done much more about unpacking the last boxes in the last few days. When I come home from work, I just want to make dinner and relax. I think I am going to finish the rest over the next few weekends. Now that we’re all moved in, there really is no hurry (unless you count the fact that a lot of you lovely people are waiting for more pictures).

… Sex and the City re-runs on TV.

… the nice, deep double sink in our kitchen. I had gotten so used to the crappy sink in our old apartment that I didn’t really know what I was secretly missing.

… painted toe nails.

… phone calls with my sister. I could never ever imagine going without talking with my sister for more than 2 days.

… getting back into a regular blogging rhythm. I always hate when I get in such a rut that I don’t know how to get back into blogging on a regular basis, but I am hoping that now that the last couple of stressful weeks are behind us, my mojo will return.

What are you loving this week?

So. much. rain.

May 18, 2011 filed under: help, my so-called life, this and that

touch the autumn
{source}

To be quite honest, I am a little bit confused.

I should be wearing sandals right now, but I am wearing boots. And long-sleeve sweaters.

Don’t believe a thing, if someone is trying to tell you that it never rains in California. It actually does rain quite a bit in the winter (especially in Northern California), but the rain – and hail, mind you! – that we’ve been enduring for the past, oh, only four days is anything but to be expected. It’s the middle of May, for Peet’s sake!

I think it’s obvious: the weather is officially getting more and more crazy. I must admit though, I am pretty relieved that we’re not dealing with tornadoes or floods like other parts of the country.

Considering the fact that most of the summer will be unbearably hot here in the Central Valley, I should probably shut my piehole right now and be thankful for the fact that we get a few more days with lower temperatures. In fact, I can’t really say that I did not not enjoy curling up on the couch under a blanket yesterday after work sipping a three big cups of tea (even though it made me use the bathroom twice last night) while watching a movie to wind down. I even turned on the heater for a little bit and didn’t feel one bit bad about it.

I did do one good deed yesterday when this little duck family was wandering around in the middle of street in front of our apartment. The little one in the left corner was visibly limping and had a hard time keeping up with the rest of his siblings.

So I shooed them over to the sidewalk, only to realize that the curb was too high for the ducklings to jump up on. The puddle in the ditch was so deep that the little ones actually had to swim, instead of just waddle through it.  I ushered them along to the next street corner (making sure that they didn’t fall into the stormwater sewer) and helped them to cross yet another busy street.  My, what a dangerous ordeal!
I am really hoping that they made it back to the park (three blocks away) that I think they came from.

How’s  the weather been in your neck of the woods?

Currently Vol. 5

May 16, 2011 filed under: currently, lists!

Morning Tea? {source}

Current Book(s):  Does the IKEA catalog count? ;)

Current Playlist: Country Station.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: BBQ chips.

Current Color: Yellow.

Current Drink:  Coffee.

Current Food: Tomato-Goat-Cheese-Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette – holy heaven.

Current Favorite Show: How do I look? (I mostly have nothing in common with the people on the show, although I do think I could need a little help in the fashion department sometimes… so, I am just using the show as a form of inspiration!)

Current Wishlist:  A bike. A new computer.

Current Needs: Some time to relax. The move is done, but there is still so much to do.

Current Bane(s) of my Existence: Time management. I swear, I used to be good at this, but right now I feel like I am not using my time wisely enough at all.

Current Celebrity (Girl) Crush: Meg Ryan. The pre-cosmetic surgery Meg Ryan. I watched ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ this weekend and couldn’t help but notice how adorable she used to be.

Current Outfit: Jeans, cardigan, flats.

Current Excitement: Making a new home! I’ve spent most of my weekend unpacking boxes, throwing stuff away (which I should have thrown out before the move) and trying to figure out which pieces of new furniture I want for our new place. I would really love to get a Papasan chair and I might have the perfect little corner for it, too :) Oh, and did I mention that my parents are going to be here in 68 days?

Current Link: I keep talking about the fact that I’d like to use my camera more. Since I just recently purchased a 50mm lens, I rediscovered this website and can’t wait to put my camera to use!

Sneak Peek: Our new place

May 11, 2011 filed under: home, news

Sneak Peak
(via my flickr)

As you might have noticed, I’ve been a little absent from the blogging world, but I just assumed that from my previous posts, you knew what I was up to.

We moved a week and a half ago and we’re still pretty much living out of boxes.
Last week I had to completely clean out the old apartment, organize and run a workshop with my supervisor, including a field trip and two days of lectures at our office, and try to get settled and start unpacking in our new place. Needless to say, I was pretty much just home to eat and sleep last week.

But soon, very soon, this place will hopefully transform in our new home and it will be the beginning of yet another new chapter in our lives.

I am nowhere near a point where I could take pictures of our new apartment without completely feeling embarrassed about its current state of messiness, but I thought I would at least give you a little sneak peak as to why we fell in love with the apartment in the first place.

This picture was taken on the day of the walk-through when I was handed the keys, which made the apartment officially ours. Isn’t it pretty?
The sliding French doors, the built-in hutch… no more explanation needed, right?
Not to mention the original hardwood floors.

I am in love… and I see a lot of trips to IKEA and Target in the not too distant future.
