Work it out weekends: walking counts, right?

February 7, 2010 filed under: fitness, healthy living

workitoutweekends

The gym hasn’t seen too much of me this week. I swear, it seriously is a time issue. Sure, I could get up an hour earlier every morning to squeeze in some gym time, but since I am already getting up freakin’ early (5:30 a.m.), I really can’t.
However, I made it a point to take the bus to work and get in a 15 minute-walk across Campus to my office every morning. Walking counts, right?

I think (or I am trying to convince myself that) I made some progress with the water drinking issue. I’ve been better about taking a 32 oz. bottle of water to work (and almost finishing it!) every day before leaving the office! Go me! That is a huge accomplishment for someone who hates drinking water. I can only hope that I’ll be able to keep it up (it’s not like I haven’t tried before and failed miserably).

My goals for this next week:

  • Actually seeing the gym from the inside again.
  • Cooking fresh and healthy meals (from scratch!) every night.
  • Keeping “Operation Less Squishy” in focus and do some weights at the gym
(I tend to just hang out on the cardio machines and maybe do a few crunches – I know that I can do better than that.)
  • Getting enough sleep.

I know, this last goal doesn’t quite fit in with “being active”, but I’ve learned about myself that I am less likely to get in a workout, when I am not only completely burned out from a long work day, but also didn’t get enough sleep in the first place. Therefore, I really have to make it a habit to be in bed by 10 p.m. (lights off!).
7,5 hours are the minimum amount of sleep I should get every night (possibly more on the weekends!).

How I can tell that my body was just “burned” this week? I slept away the whole Saturday. It rarely happens that I just sleep away a whole day, but when it happens, I know that I was seriously running on empty.

How did your week go? What are your goals for the coming week?

Work it out weekends: minus the working out

January 24, 2010 filed under: fitness, healthy living

workitoutweekends

To be honest, this week was a complete fail workout-wise. I had so much going on that I didn’t make it to the gym once since last Sunday, which is somewhat upsetting.  But when you leave the house at 6:30 a.m. every morning and when you don’t come home until like 7 p.m. and then have something going on every night, there really was no time to squeeze in some gym time.
I feel bad.

However, I just returned from the gym and are proud to say that I worked out for an hour and 15 minutes, running on the cross trainer for 3.1 miles and doing some weights and 120 crunches.
I’ve also planned out the coming week already, so the next update should be a little bit less about excuses and more about real workouts.

Regarding the healthy eating, I can happily report that I have cooked (from scratch!) every single night this last week and I didn’t use any “processed” ingredients, besides one jar of (pre-made, but at least organic, and sugar-free!) marinara sauce. (Can someone please tell me why pretty much every single jar of pasta sauce at the supermarket has sugar listed as an ingredient? There really doesn’t belong any sugar in pasta sauce.)
I didn’t do so well with drinking enough water – as I said, it’s an issue. I just don’t enjoy drinking water (in general, and especially when I am not thirsty at all) and pretty much have to force the bottle to my mouth. It’s a pretty awful feeling, almost like you’re trying to get food down your throat if you really feel stuffed already.
I know that with the drinking, my body is pretty much fooling itself and people have told me that you can “teach yourself” to drink more. (Any tips?)
Hopefully I’ll be a fast learner.

I also have to admit that I had to eat out once, because there was a group lunch at work, but regardless of that, according to my food log journal I’ve stayed within or below my calculated daily burned calories. This is making me feel giddy, because I have at least accomplished something this week.

So, we’re starting a new week and I am motivated.
If you jumped on the bandwagon, how did your week go?

Work it out weekends: Take 1

January 17, 2010 filed under: fitness, healthy living

workitoutweekends

As I outlined in my goals for the New Year, I am planning to get back into a regular work out routine. What better way than to do this along with the encouragement and mental support of some lovely ladies that have begun the new decade with the same goals.
Wishcake has started  the “Work it out weekend”-posts and in an effort to hold myself accountable, I am joining the endeavor and am planning to post every weekend about my efforts during the week to become healthier and fitter.

I think I am off to a good start. I’ve been working out at the gym at least 3x a week  since the new year started and it makes such a huge difference in my energy level already, even after barely two weeks.  I can hardly explain.

I have not yet found a new class that I’d like to attend regularly. I am doing a mix of cardio and weights right now, timewise adding up to about an hour and fifteen minutes. My newly passed down, very own Ipod helps with motivation. I’ve already put a workout playlist together (however, any suggestions?) and I enjoy the opportunity to consciously listen to some music again during my workout.
As you can imagine, there is only one person that decides on our “home playlist” 95% of the time and – what a surprise!- it’s not me! (Ok, fortunately, I can say that J and I have a very similar taste in music, which definitely helps.)

Here are my goals for the coming weeks:

  • DRINK MORE WATER. This is a major issue for me; I just don’t drink enough water during the day. I have been trying to substitute with (pots of herbal) tea during the winter months, but I still need to get this under control. I am planning to finish at least one 32oz. bottle of water at work (additional to the tea) and another one when I get home. (Expect me to spend an extensive amount of time at the bathroom. I might have to blog from there.)
  • WORK OUT AT THE GYM at least 3, better 4, times a week.
  • Lose up to 8 pounds. Even though I don’t feel I necessarily have to lose weight, I wouldn’t mind shedding a few pounds.  My main goal though is taking care of the “squishy-ness”. I might be slim, but I am not toned or firm.
  • Shop and eat more consciously.
  • Keep track of my calorie intake – just for the heck of it. As you know, sometimes we easily kid ourselves into believing that what we’re eating is healthy, when, in fact, it is not. (HELLO unhealthy, but oh-so-delicious Cesar Salad.) I am trying to get a better sense of how much calories I am consuming vs. burning with the easy food log journal on FitDay.com.

And on that note, I am off to the gym. Wanna join?

Please, if you haven’t done so, read my post below about “The Help Haiti Blog Challenge” and consider leaving a comment on the post by January 18, 2010.
I am sure you would want me to give an extra dollar to a good cause.

THANKS!

Kicking my “inneren Schweinehund” in the butt

March 3, 2009 filed under: fitness, my so-called life, USA

Ok, this is hard to admit, but I probably have not worked out on a regular basis in at least 6 months and I feel awful about it.

I went to the gym on Sunday. Finally.
I thought it would never happen again, even though I’d been craving the after-workout feeling for a while, I could not for the life of me get myself to the gym for a regular work out.
I blame it on the winter blues and the fact that I don’t own an Ipod.
I mean, how am I supposed to work out with 4 TV’s with different programs AND the stereo blasting at me at the gym? Seriously.

Everbody has an Ipod these days (even Carolina! ;)), and I don’t even own a simple MP3-player.
But then again, J has an Ipod. I guess, I could have borrowed it. Although, there is no music on it right now (we had to reset it)…ha!
So there, there is your excuse. And a damn good one, too ;)

Anyways, I finally kicked my “inneren Schweinehund” in the butt and just went to the gym on Sunday. Yesterday I felt comfortably sore and now I am looking forward to the next work out in hope that the soreness will go away for good :)

Besides this glorious news (I know, I know), I went to my first babyshower ever (!) on Saturday. My co-worker is going to be a Dad in April and my other co-worker and I (just girls, you know) were invited to the babyshower. I honestly had no idea what to expect, but it was seriously fun!

In retrospect, I wish I had taken this American tradition and had run with it.
I would have loved to throw a babyshower for my sister :) But hey, maybe there will be a “next time”!

There were drinks and appetizers, we played some silly games (not the silly ones that I was told about though) like guessing the circumference of the baby belly by cutting a piece of ribbon (the one with the closest guess received a prize) and watched the mom-to-be unwrap her enormous (!) pile of gifts. Wow, people were so generous!
On top of all the gifts, they received like a 2-months-supply of diapers already. Not bad, considering what a pack of diapers costs these days!

The rest of my weekend was less than exciting.
I had to run my usual errands and I sat down to deal with my tax return. I tried out one of the free tax softwares online, and guess what? Who would have thought that I am entitled too a much bigger refund than previously anticipated!?
I could have totally missed that if I hadn’t tried out the online software.  That really made my weekend! Wohoo!
(Now, you keep you fingers crossed that with all that budget crisis going on the federal government will actually disburse the refunds.)

Capricious weather

April 22, 2008 filed under: fitness, my so-called life

Do you remember how I was rubbing in last week that the thermometer had reached almost 90°F [=30°C] for the first time this year? Yeah, well, turns out that was just a little taste of summer.

Admittedly, it is still April and we’re back to the mid-60’s where we should be. And I actually like it that way. I took a long, hot bubble bath last weekend – which might just as well have been the last time before a most likely long and hot summer – so I’d better enjoy it when I can. Right now, it even looks like rain when I look out. I had to get out my fleece-jacket to go to work this morning.

My gym class killed me last night. Figuratively speaking, of course, since you can very well see that I am here to type this entry. It’s weird, even though I know it’s going to hurt a little a lot the next day, I do look forward to the workout every Monday… the one day that I have totally committed to workoutwise, even though I am hoping and trying to go at least two more times per week.
I really do enjoy the satisfying, nevertheless tired, feeling when the class ends, right before the best part of the 1,5-hour-workout: stretching. The music gets all quiet and everybody gets into a relaxed state of mind. I feel sweaty, exhausted, but really good. Absolutely great and rewarding feeling.

Come on, don’t tell me that doesn’t make you want to go to the gym :)

Gosh, I am so behind.

March 18, 2008 filed under: fitness, my so-called life

I can’t believe it’s been a whole week since my birthday and I haven’t posted anything. I feel like I am behind on so much stuff… updating, responding to emails, returning calls. If I owe you any of that, please be patient with me.

I’ve been busy with work and even with a three-day-weekend, there is only so much you can get done. At least I finished my tax return on Sunday. That’s always a drag and I sure am relieved that I got that out of the way.

On Friday, I went to Susi’s wedding reception. She got us all quite surprised there, didn’t she? It was a really nice small reception with yummy food and a bunch of toddlers and kids. If there is Susi, there are kids :)

The rest of the weekend was busy with running errands, filling out my tax return and catching up on some overdue phone calls. Damn, the time difference really only leaves the weekends for calls to Germany and why the hell don’t I get a couple more hours in the mornings, so that I can talk to everyone I need to talk to?!

Yesterday I went to my gym class again. Since I skipped last Monday for an obvious reason, I knew going back would be hard.
Let’s just say it was harder.
When the 1,5 hours were over, I was completely beat-up. I felt like I couldn’t lift my arms, let alone my legs to walk out of the exercise room.
I think I made it to the store and then back home in a state of trance.

Luckily, I didn’t have to prepare any dinner since we had leftovers from Sunday night, and I collapsed on the couch and watched “SATC” with my roommate for an hour. THE perfect way to relax, if you ask me ;)
I pretty much crashed after this, only to wake up with a headache after a very non-recuperative night . Just fabulous!
I am not quite sure if that was due to the heavy workout or the fact that I did my tax forms in my dream over and over and over again.

Go figure!

Spontaneous Shopping Spree

February 11, 2008 filed under: fitness, my so-called life, shopping

Here’s my theory: If you go shopping for something specific, you’ll never find it, but if you’re not looking for anything, you’ll find the coolest things.

True!?

At least for me, that’s why I went on a little spontaneous shopping spree last weekend.

First of all, I went to Target to shop for some household items when I came across a really cool, marked down workout shirt and some black workout pants. Given the fact that I am trying to go the gym at least three times a week now, I could justify buying some new workout clothes, because I really don’t have that many shirts and pants.

See, even though I haven’t made it to the gym more often then twice or three times a week yet, my attitude is on the right track. Therefore, I also went to REI this weekend to get J and myself a “must-have” waterbottle. I am sick and tired of buying and wasting the small plastic water bottles from the supermarket and therefore decided that investing into something “durable” would be a responsible move – not just for our wallet, but also for the environment. You can’t argue against that. And you also can’t argue against the style of this bottle. I love it.

my stylish new waterbottle...

Last but not least, I made an impulsive online purchase yesterday. My roommate got those really cute, new Keen Sandals. She told me that she bought them online for 50% less of what you would pay at the store. Including shipping. She already had me at “50% less”… but I also had to get these shoes, a) because I’ve always wanted those kind of shoes and never got them, and b) because they are red!

New sandals :)
Aren’t they just pretty? I love spontaneous shopping sprees, because they are usually – surprise! - so unexpected ;)

The rest of the weekend was just awesome, too. Great sunny weather, springlike temperatures,  X-files marathon and a great Sunday morning breakfast at Baker Square.

I could so! be a hibernator

November 20, 2007 filed under: fitness, my so-called life, NaBloPoMo

I’ve been really tired lately.
I think it must be the time of the year.
The last two weekends, I easily slept at least 10 hours each night without waking up once. That is very unusual for me. I usually wake up some time in the early morning and, if I don’t have to go to work, and only then!, I just go right back to sleep.

Although I have gotten pretty used to the 10-hour-work day… there are days where I just don’t want to do anything else, but go home, put my behind on the couch, get a footmassage from someone nice :) , eat some dinner and watch TV slash read.

Oh well. Not tonight.

We have an “appointment” at the gym [Yay me, I went twice this weekend!] and we have to do some shopping for our trip [you know, carryon-size bottles of shampoo and the like].
Also, the apartment needs some clean up, before we leave for a kick-ass Thanksgiving weekend, so that our roomie comes home to a neat place.

I’d better go.

Getting in shape

November 8, 2007 filed under: fitness, my so-called life, NaBloPoMo

I joined the gym.

Remember how I was talking about that it would probably not make sense to join a gym and that I could go running at the nearby park?
Yeah, actually… it does make sense to join a gym. At least for me. I am much more motivated to work out if I have cardio machines and weights at my disposal.

So, I signed up for “The Biggest Loser – a 6 week weight loss program“ at my gym. Yes, they’re actually affiliated with the TV show with the same name.
But wait, before you burst out into “why the hell do you want to lose weight” or similar exclamations – I am only doing it because it was a special money-saving offer which included 5 personal trainer sessions, fitness assessment, online nutrition planning and a program guide. First of all, it’s good to have a fitness assessment when you seriously start to work out again and second of all, I am kind of intrigued to find out about my eating habits. Overall, I feel that I am eating healthy with all the fresh home-cooking, but who knows?!

Last night, I had my first session and according to my, newly hired, short-term personal trainer, I am starving myself [which is, in no literal sense of the word, true in any way]. Ostensibly, eating twice a day is NOT healthy… but I am doing fine with breakfast in the late morning [= nutritious and long-lasting whole grain bread] and then -most days- nothing until dinner. I really do.
Sure, I do get the occasional craving and then I do -believe it or not- get a snack or that bar of chocolate. But most days, I am so busy at work that I just “forget” to eat and it usually never bothers me to the point where I have to deal with a rebelling stomach.

So, according to my -remember, short-term!- personal trainer, I should have 5-6 small meals *gasp* per day. This is SO NOT going to happen. It would make me feel like I am eating ALL day. I am also not so convinced about the protein bars that he’s suggesting. I do like to work out, but I am far from training for a marathon or something like that, so I think the protein bars would just go straight to my hips than being used as “energy supply”.

Here’s the compromise: I will try to eat more vegetables and fruit and from now on take at least one of those, or sometimes both!, to work as a lunch snack. I do understand that that actually might be good for me ;) How does that sound?

Soreness

September 12, 2007 filed under: fitness, my so-called life

So, I started running again last night. I hadn’t really worked out in over two months, because things have been so crazy around here, but now I really want to get back into my work-out routine. My roommate goes to the gym and I actually considered signing up for it. I like using the cardio-machines and occasionally the weights, but I checked out the membership fees and hell no, it’s way to expensive. Also, I could only use it three nights a week [M-WED] anyways, because the other days I am not here and we do have a fitness room at our apartment complex down south. So my plan is this: I want to go running two nights a week while I am in Sacramento and then use the fitness room once or twice when I am back home.
We have a nice park two blocks from the house and it’s a very popular spot for runners – so I don’t even have to work out just by myself. There are always people running on the “track” [ = path around the park]. Can you tell, I am highly motivated ;) although my legs feel as heavy as lead today. Ok, I have to say that I kind of pushed it last night – a 40-minute-run after a two-months break was probably not the smartest idea.

On a different note, I admit it. I am a bargain hunter. Not to be confused with a scrooge. I like to and do spend money on certain things, but I also like to get special deals and if I can get something for a cheaper price or even free that it juuust fine with me :)

Therefore, I just LOVE this “Ding!”-thing from Southwest that I downloaded the other week. It’s a little desktop application that you download to your computer and then it’ll notify you with exclusive airfare offers that are not available anywhere other than through this application. I had signed up for Southwest’s email newsletter a while ago and I didn’t really think that “Ding!”-thing would really get me any better deals than the ones I already get on the Internet by booking the “Internet fare” in advance or something, but last Sunday, I received a notification with airfares between Sacramento and Burbank for $39 one-way! This is such a steal!
The offers are usually only good for a day or two, so I acted instantly and booked two more round-trips for the end of the month for $98 each [including taxes!] I actually would have booked flights for the rest of the year, if I hadn’t had to pay for them right away… darn it. Keep your fingers crossed for another cool offer soon – because every cent I save on airfare is another cent in my pocket ;)
