April favorites

April 28, 2017 filed under: monthly favorites

1. I was looking for a sleeve for my iphone (since my old one didn’t fit anymore and was also falling apart) and I came across this super-soft and cute CORNMI leather pouch. It has three card slots two openings to hold your phone and cash. It also has four magnetic button closures as well.

2.  I’ve had MAC’s Pro Longwear Paint Pot (in soft ochre) for a while, but never mentioned it here before. WHY? It’s such a great eyeshadow primer // slash// neutral eyeshadow and while a bit on the pricey side, it lasts forever!

3. I haven’t used it that much yet, but I think my friend Susi introduced me to Apple Pay and it’s genius. It’s nice to know that I always have a ‘way to pay’, even if I just go for a run with just my phone in my pocket. Oh, the conveniences of modern life.

4. I really didn’t need new jeans, in fact, I should probably get rid off a few that I haven’t worn in ages, but I just couldn’t walk by these Old Navy Mid-rise Built-in Sculpt Rockstar Jeans in stone lake (gray). I only had blue and black jeans (so far) and the gray color just called to me. It is such a nice color for pants to pair with a variety of other colors. Besides, they were affordable and are so comfy.

5. I love my new Brooks Ravenna 7 running shoes that I got last month. I’ve put some outdoor miles on them and they’re really comfortable and so pretty.

6. I picked up this Bumble and Bumble protective hair primer at Sephora a few weeks ago and then was pleasantly surprised to see that my (new) hair dresser was using it as well. It  detangles, softens, and silkens hair, has UV and heat protectants to keep hair healthy and moisturized, and it tames frizz. I love it.

What was one of your favorite things in April?

looking forward to seeing and spending time with my whole family and eating all the food in  a couple of weeks — hooray!

reading No one cares about crazy people: the chaos and heartbreak of mental health in America by Ron Powers. Oh boy, I am in for a rough ride, I suppose (I am only two chapters in).

watching SNL. I hadn’t watched SNL in a long time, but started to watch it again shortly after the election. Melissa McCarthy and Alec Baldwin are so funny. I also really love Kate McKinnon. She’s hilarious (and she reminds me a little bit of Anke Engelke (who my German friends will know!) with her versatility).

working on my second half marathon training. I am in week 4 now and it’s going well so far. I’ll be talking about the plan and how it’s going a little more in a separate post.

enjoying the warm spring weather (when it’s not raining- ha!).  We’ve had a mixed bag of spring weather so far, but it’s been nice.

listening to this contemporary piano piece by Mark Pinkus (actually his whole album is wonderful!). I love it.  I’d love to learn how to play this (I miss my piano!). If you clicked on the link, what did you think? Do you ever listen to piano music?

contemplating if it is going to be too late to plant some vegetables and fruits after I get back from Germany at the end of May?

eating all the pasta.

drinking Arnold Palmers (iced tea with lemonade). It’s delicious and refreshing.

loving my new hair cut + color. I was so overdue, so it was marvelous to go in last Saturday and have my head pampered for two hours!

feeling guilty that I didn’t attend the ‘march for science’ on Saturday. It wasn’t on my radar when I made the hair appointment and since I had been putting that off for so long already, I didn’t want to cancel or postpone it, because of my upcoming trip home. I am glad that so many people turned out for the march in our city though! That was nice to see.

not so happy that we owed taxes this year for the first time ever. I always try to be on top of our regular deductions, but sometimes it’s hard to figure out. Meh.

What’s going on with you currently?

5 ways to pamper yourself

April 21, 2017 filed under: my so-called life

Self-care is so important and I am a big proponent of some pampering. Especially when we’re stretched thin during a very hectic time in our lives or when we’re in race training. Sometimes pampering yourself can be a matter of an hour to yourself.

Here are my favorite ways to pamper myself:

1. A pedicure — It’s always a treat for me. And ever since I started running, my feet need all the help they can get! Haha.

2. Reading on the couch — I am usually a busy-body who needs to do at least three things at the same time (because ‘OMG, so much to do, so little time!’ ), but I’ve recently rediscovered the joys of just focusing on a book (or magazine) and not feeling guilty about not doing anything else at the same time! It’s been glorious.

3. A massage — I don’t get massages very often (I know, other runners get them regularly), but it’s a special treat after a race or for a special occasion.

4. Yoga — I haven’t been to yoga in a while (ahem!), but when I manage to go, I usually really enjoy it and feel really relaxed and calm afterward. (Note to self: Go back to yoga already!)

5. Skip a workout — I usually don’t like to think of it as ‘skipping’, but rather postponing a workout. Sometimes, you just have to listen to your body and take a rest day when it really wants one (not when the training schedule says you should take it).

What’s your favorite way to pamper yourself?

Recipe | Sweet Plaited Yeast Bread

April 18, 2017 filed under: recipe

Here’s the recipe that I promised you yesterday! I think I have shared the recipe before, but it’s been a while and I thought I would share it again for my new readers.

Like every good German, I am slightly obsessed with bread (surprise!) and if you’ve been around this corner of the Internet, you know that I traditionally bake a sweet plaited bread for New Year’s and Easter. It’s a tradition in the Rhineland and for me, it doesn’t feel right without it.

Do you have traditional Easter baked goods or other dishes that you always make every year?

Sweet Yeast Bread

Print Recipe Pin Recipe

Ingredients

  • 500 g (4 cups) flour (all-purpose or bread flour)
  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • 70 g (1/3 cup) sugar
  • 250 ml milk
  • 80 g (1/3 cup) soft butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 egg yolk
  • pearl sugar optional

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine flour and yeast; stir well.
  • Combine milk and butter in a small bowl; heat (in the microwave) until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
  • Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add the egg, sugar, and salt and knead thoroughly until smooth and elastic.
  • Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1-2 hours (or over night).
  • Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into three equal size rounds. Roll each round into a long roll and form a loosely braided loaf.
  • Connect both ends and seal the ends of the wreath together.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Place loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and cover loosely with a damp towel. Place loaf in a warm place and let rise again for 30-45 minutes.
  • Brush risen loaf with egg yolk. Sprinkle with pearl sugar*, if desired.
Bake in preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until golden.

This is best enjoyed fresh with butter or some jam. I also love it with a soft-boiled egg or some liverwurst or cheese.

*Pearl sugar seems to be hard to come by. I haven’t been able to find it at regular grocery stores and have bought some and brought it back from Germany. But I googled again and found some here and here. (I’d better not tell you that 8 oz cost less than 1 € in Germany. I guess, I’ll keep importing it.)

Our Easter Weekend

April 17, 2017 filed under: holidays, weekend

Hi friends, how was your Easter weekend? I hope it was lovely!

I have to be honest with you: if my Mom hadn’t reminded me that it’s Easter weekend, I probably would have completely blanked on it this year. Oops. I blame the fact that neither Good Friday, nor Easter Monday is a federal holiday, so I tend to forget when these holidays come up. I am glad that she reminded me though because I had to get baking for Easter Sunday. We always have sweet yeast bread for Easter (come back for the recipe tomorrow!) and I wasn’t going to skip this year.

Friday I ran my usual errands and then I had an interval training scheduled in the afternoon. The weather was perfect and it was a great 7.5 mile- workout!

Untitled

We made a big pot of stew for dinner and watched TV.

Saturday was household chore day, hooray. I worked on our mid-month budget, we did a few loads of laundry and mopped and cleaned the whole house. I mean, who doesn’t like a clean kitchen? I sure do!

Untitled

J had a haircut appointment in the early evening and we went out for pizza afterward. When we came home,  I prepared the bread dough for the two loaves of bread that I was going to bake in the morning and then I read until after midnight. Oops. Does that ever happen to you, too?

Yesterday was low-key. I slept in, baked sweet Easter bread and a multi-grain bread and talked to my parents on the phone. Everybody had gathered at my sister’s house in the morning for brunch and an Easter egg hunt for the kids. I wish I could have been there.

Untitled

I have to confess that I skipped my scheduled long run yesterday afternoon. I wish I could say that we had other commitments and that’s why I missed my run, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, we had nowhere else to be yesterday and I simply love days where I don’t have to leave the house. I feel a little bad about it, but a) it was raining non-stop (I know, excuses, excuses!) and b) I didn’t want to drive to the gym. Besides, my current book was calling my name and the couch was way too comfortable. What can I say? I poured myself another cup of coffee and gave in to laziness.

I am planning to make up for it this week though.

How was your Easter weekend? Did you do anything fun?

Weekend recap + some random thoughts

April 11, 2017 filed under: this and that, weekend

I don’t know if you noticed but I am suffering a bit from writer’s block lately. The posts just don’t come easy for me right now. But what do you do when you don’t know what to write? You keep writing (in the hopes that the mojo will come back to you — or me, for that matter).

I thought I would share some random thoughts today about my weekend and current life in general.

+ I finished our taxes on Friday. Hallelujah. I started our tax return back in February and usually let it sit for just a little while, before going over it one more time and submitting it. Well, I procrastinated and here we were in April already and I just wanted to get that damn thing out. Do you do the taxes in your house? Or do you have a significant other or tax accountant who takes care of it?

+ I rewarded myself with a cup of tea and my new Runner’s World magazine afterward. I just love winding down on the couch with a hot beverage and a magazine.

+ Saturday night, J and I had a craving for Thai food and if there is one hard-and-fast rule that I always obey is that you should absolutely and immediately give in to such cravings. Am I right?

+ I mentioned having good eyesight in my latest post. Between you and me, I think my eyesight might be just average (although I still don’t need any glasses — yet! Knock on wood!), but I do have a thing for catching little details that often get overlooked. Like this beautiful heart-shaped leaf in our front yard hedge. Isn’t it pretty? I love that it’s red, too.

+ I ran a (virtual) 5k with one of my Facebook Groups this weekend and even though running a virtual race is very different from running an actual, organized race with other people, I love when groups of friends (even if all of them live in different states) get together and commit to a common goal. We even got shirts (not pictured) and medals!

+ Today would have been my great-aunt’s 95th birthday. She’s been gone for a little over 4 years and I still miss her dearly and think about her so often. I wish she was still with us and we could celebrate her today.

A re-introduction of me

April 5, 2017 filed under: about me

If you’ve been around, you know who I am, you know my story. I’ve blogged for close to 14 years *gasp* and it seems silly to write an introductory post, but my readership has considerably changed over time (and so have my posts) and I haven’t really introduced myself (or updated my ‘About me’ page, ahem) in quite a while. I am also part of a new blogger group on Facebook, so when I saw Jessie’s post a little while ago, I thought it would be a great idea to jump on the bandwagon (especially because Jessie is one of my newer blog friends, too) and re-introduce myself to any new readers.

You probably know already that my name is San, which is short for Sandra, and only people on the Internet really call me that. You’re welcome to call me San oder Sandra, but not Sandy. That is a no-go.

I grew up in Germany, but have lived in California for almost 15 years. I have a (fraternal) twin sister and I am super-close with my family. How I have managed to live so far away from them for such a long time is still a bit of a mystery to me.

img_2857.jpg
I studied geography, English and Physical Education in college. I then spent an exchange semester at a UC school, met (my now-husband) J and got ‘stuck’ here in the US of A. Voluntarily, I might add. J and I live in Northern California and have been married for 10 years now. And this, my friends, seems crazy-unbelievable. No kids and not pets in our house (as of yet).

I love running, the outdoors, reading, baking + cooking, and doing things with my hands (knitting, crocheting, crafting – you name it.)

IMG_8777

Now let’s have some fun with some very random questions!

Q : Can you recommend a good wine?

A : You wish! But no. You’ll be appalled to hear that I am not really a wine drinker or beer drinker for that matter. (And I come from the land of good beer – so, what does it mean!!?). Unfortunately, I can’t give you any good recommendations (unless you want me to get my Dad involved, who is a wine connoisseur. Let me know.).

Q : Do you enjoy shopping?

A : If you are talking about the fact of acquiring new things, yes. I do like to shop occasionally. If you’re talking about the act of going to the mall and multiple different stores, nope. I do like grocery shopping, though (which I hear is a rare thing).

Q : How do you take your coffee?

A : ⅓ of milk and a splash of (original) creamer. That is pretty much the only way I will have coffee. I mean, besides the occasional fancy drink from a coffee shop that I won’t try to replicate at home.

Q : Which would you rather do: wash the dishes, mow the lawn, vacuum the house or clean the bathroom?

A : I prefer to do the dishes. Everything kitchen-related doesn’t bother me when it comes to chores. The rest of the house, meh.

Q : Which of the five senses would you say is your strongest?

A : I’d probably say my eye-sight (J would agree). I often spot little details that go unnoticed by other people. I also spot – without fail – any cats in our neighborhood.

Q : What was your first job?

A : My very first job was babysitting (whose wasn’t?), and then I worked at my neighbor’s veterinarian practice during the summer breaks. I loved working with animals and always thought I wanted to become a vet, but I learned pretty quickly that I wasn’t cut out for the job (too much heartbreak).

Q : What’s a random factoid about yourself?

A : I am sort of ambidextrous. I can’t really write with my left hand, but I will randomly eat with the spoon/fork in my left hand sometimes. I also trained long jump in college consistently using my right leg as the takeoff leg and then – on exam day – I used my left leg (without really noticing) and achieved a better result than in training. Funny how that works. I also had a stronger backhand in tennis and would switch between right and left hand hitting in softball.

Q : What did you want to be when you were a kiddo?

A : I wanted to become a vet. I never had a pet growing up, but I always loved animals and wanted to work with them. As mentioned above, though, I wasn’t cut out to work with sick animals. It was too much heartache and performing surgeries was not something I wanted to do full-time. Then I wanted to become a teacher. I actually got my degree in teaching and then changed my mind when I moved to the US. But did you notice how everything I studied is represented in my life: I work as a geographer, live in an English-speaking country, and still pursue sports (in my free time).

Q : What’s something you wish you could change about yourself?

A : I wish I could let go of things (and people) more easily. I am not someone who holds a grudge for very long, but I have a very hard time to come to terms with rejection, fall outs, or disagreements with other people, especially when I feel I was unfairly accused of something I didn’t do or intended. I keep thinking about it over and over and try to figure out why things went sour.

Q : If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life?

A : Fresh bread with gouda, tomatoes, and onions.

Now, its your turn – ask me a question and teach me something about you I didn’t know!
And also, welcome new readers!

Hello April

April 3, 2017 filed under: about me, lists!

We’re entering the 2nd quarter of 2017. Welcome. Stay a while.

April has started out with gorgeous spring weather, lots of sunshine and warm temperatures here in Northern California (although, some more rain is still in the forecast). I’ve been enjoying the early morning sunbeams in my kitchen and not having to use the heater much anymore.
The thermometer hit 80°F for the first time this weekend. I know that other parts of the country are still freezing, so I will be grateful, but I’d also be happy to pass on a few degrees. I am happiest in the mid 70’s.

April is going to be a relatively uneventful month, I think, but I am looking forward to it nonetheless.

+ I’ll be gone on a quick overnight work trip to SoCal. I wish I had time to go to the beach and see some friends, but that will have to wait for another time. It’s still nice to get out of the office every once in a while.

+ I am settling into my new cubicle life. We were moved in last week and except for missing my window + view, I am adjusting. Sort of. It’s interesting because if you have worked + shared an office with a co-worker for such a long time, where you could practically lean to the right and look that person in the face, there is a lot of interaction going on that has ceased since we moved into the cubes. You just don’t talk to each other through over a wall, as you do when you sit face to face. So, it feels less social, but also less private when you have to be on a telcon. Luckily, we don’t sit in a huge room with tons of cubicles. It’s just the two of us in the main suite surrounded by four (real) offices (with doors).

+ Three days into April and I have officially hit my reading goal for this year. I thought 25 books was ambitious (I only read 13 books last year), but apparently not so much. Time to set new reading goals for the rest of this year!

+ I am overdue for a haircut. That will definitely happen this month. I am contemplating a little bit of color for the summer. What do you think?

+ I am hoping to meet up with Tanja later this month. It will be an anniversary of sorts, because we met for the first time IRL a year ago in Manhattan Beach! Of course, we’ve known each other much longer!

+ I have officially started half marathon training again last weekend. It was time to set some new goals and give a little more structure to my workouts. Nothing will come of nothing.

What’s going on with you in April?
