10 ideas to build up that financial cushion

April 23, 2013 filed under: FYI, goals, help

2012 in pictures: week 35
With my goal to track our spending for the last couple of months, I have also thought about ways to save a little bit more money for rainy days.

I already have some money automatically transferred into savings every month, but I know I can do more.

My problem usually is that what is most commonly suggested in order to cut unnecessary spending, I already do. I make my own lunches 99% of the time, I don’t get fancy coffee on the way to work, but brew it myself at the office, I don’t go to happy hour or spend a lot of money on eating/drinking out in general.

I realize that I do tend to be a bit of an impulse buyer, usually just little things here and there that provide instant gratification. A new stamp at Michaels, a marked-down shirt at Target, some random product from the beauty isle. I know that is an area I can work on.

A penny saved is a penny earned, right? Money that is not “available” in cash or your checking account, is not as easily spent.

So, the trick is to trick yourself into putting away money without even really knowing it.

Here are a few ideas I already implement:

1. Put your spare change in a piggy owl bank (like the one above). J is really good at that and he often goes through my wallet to empty it of all the change that I carry around. I frequently get mad at him for taking away all my change (as I do like to have a couple of quarters and nickles, because you never know when you might need them for a parking meter or what have you), but fact is: our piggy bank will fill up and that’s a good thing. It might not be that much total, but it could add up to as much as $100 a year or more.

2. Use a cash-back credit card. A lot of banks and institutions offer the option of earning cash-back on every purchase that you make with your credit card. I only recommend this if you know how to handle a credit card and if you pay off the balance every month (otherwise it won’t make any sense), but if you play it smart, you can make actual money off using your credit card. I personally have an AMEX account through hour Costco membership and I average about $200 in cash-back every year. Not bad, if you ask me!

3. Automatically transfer money from your paycheck into savings. Like I mentioned above, we do this already, but I know that we could save a little more. I’ve seen recommendations for like 10% of your income and then built it up to a higher percentage if you can.

Here are a few more ideas that I’d like to consider:

4. Save money that you earned by using coupons and store card discounts. I am not BIG into couponing. Most coupons are for stuff I usually don’t buy anyway and it’s too much of a hassle to search for coupons every week. However, I do use coupons (when I come across them) and store discounts where I can. I am thinking about putting the coupon savings (that are conveniently printed on to your store receipt as a percentage and $ amount of your purchase) to savings after every shopping trip. I mean, you technically could have paid full price, so why not put away that extra money?

5. Save interest earned on your savings. Do you earn interest on the savings you already have? For me, they show up in my checking account and even though it’s a really small amount, I want to get into the habit of transferring the interest back into the savings account, where it belongs.

6. Save your raise. If you were lucky enough to get even the smallest raise (ha! Hasn’t happened for me in… ever!… due to my stupid contractor position), consider automatically having the amount transferred into savings. You won’t even miss it since you already have a budget set to the salary that you earned previously.

7. Save all your $5 bills. My Dad taught me this when I was a little girl. He would put away every 5 Deutsche Mark coins (now 5€ bills) into a piggy hour glass bank and use this to finance part of our annual skiing vacations. Genius.

8. Transfer left-over money into savings at the end of the month. If you happen to have budgeted quite successfully during the month, consider transferring left-over money (or part of it) into savings, before you start a new month. I really like this idea, although I wish I wasn’t paid on a bi-weekly basis, but instead got my salary at the beginning of each month in full. Maybe it’s just me, but I have a hard time keeping track of expenses (and which part of the month they belong to), when I get paid twice a month on odd days. I am sorry, I just like it a bit more organized than that.

9. Reward yourself for chores you don’t like to do.  This really is a bit of a mind game because by paying yourself, you’re not actually earning any more money, BUT see it as a treat for yourself that every time you do an unpleasant chore, you put a couple of dollars away to reward yourself with later.

10. Round-up online purchases. If you happen to do a lot of online shopping, you could consider rounding up to the nearest dollar amount ($14.49 to $15) of even to the nearest ten ($14.49 to $20) and put the difference into savings.

Do you have other suggestions?
What do you do to trick yourself into saving a few bucks?

One Lovely Blog Award

July 25, 2012 filed under: about me, awards, FYI, lists!

one-lovely-blog-award

Kyria was so sweet and gave me a blog award a little while ago and I am happy to pass this award along by doing the following:

1) Post the award logo on your blog and link back to the person who nominated you.
2) Tell seven things about yourself.
3) Nominate up to 15 additional bloggers whom you think deserve the award.
4) Post a comment on the blog of each nominee to tell them they have been nominated!

Here are the seven things about me.

1. I am a grammar nerd. I always loved grammar in school. While I can tolerate the occasional error or typo, blog posts – and worse FB messages, where I see it much more often –  that are riddled with mistakes make me cringe. By no means am I saying that I don’t make the occasional mistake (English is my second language after all), but if you’re publishing anything on a blog, in a public forum or on FB, for peet’s sake, have some kind of grammatical standard.

2. I love dairy. Milk, butter, cheese, yogurt, you name it. I don’t know if I could ever give it up.

3. I don’t really watch any current TV shows. I am not glued to my DVR every night. I mostly watch the news and then occasionally I DVR some silly shows like ‘Sister Wives’ or ‘Veep’, which we watch when we have time or feel like it. I know I am in the minority here, as so many people follow all kind of TV series.

4. I don’t really like avocados, but I love guacamole. Odd? Maybe. I think I like the taste of avocado more than I like the texture of the actual fruit. Maybe that’s why I like it all mashed up (with salsa).

5. I wish I was more fashionable and I wish I had some sort of personal style. I see things on other people or in the store and then buy them because I think they look great, but once I am home, I can’t make those items work for me. My wardrobe is all over the place. I guess, I am – like in so many areas of my life – an eclectic.

6. I’ve become an on-and-off-athlete. Can one say that? Ha! Anyway, the point is: I have phases where I do really, really good with my workouts and then I have phases where I fall completely off the bandwagon. Before you chime in and tell me this is possibly normal, I’d like to point out that I have a degree in P.E. and I have played some kind of sports game (often more than one) throughout my whole life. It still feels odd to me to just go to the gym and not go to tennis or softball practice and play games on the weekends.

7. The only thing I won’t eat is liver. Oh, and I won’t try any other weird animals or insects.

I am nominating a few lovely ladies (I am not sure I am going to make it to 15, but whoever feels like playing along and who I didn’t nominate, is very welcome to participate!):
Chrissy, Terra, Lauryn, Mandy, Erin, StephAnne, Alli, Holly, Mel, Erin, Viviane, and everybody else who would like to have some fun with this!

11 Meme

January 31, 2012 filed under: about me, FYI, lists!

11
{source}

I was tagged by the lovely Stephany in this meme (actually Erin tagged me, too, a while back) and I thought it would be fun to participate. It’s interesting to learn random facts about people, don’t you agree? Facts that they might usually not blog about!

Here are the rules.

1. You must post these rules.
2. Each person must post 11 things about themselves on their blog.
3. Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post and create
11 new questions for the people you tag to answer.
4. You have to choose 11 people to tag and link them on the post.
5. No tag backs and you legitimately have to tag 11 people.

11 Facts About Myself.
  1. I have a thing for typing. The physical act of typing on a keyboard makes me happy.
  2. I’m a breakfast person. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day (I miss my German rolls though). Unfortunately, when I work, I don’t usually get to indulge in a big, leisurely breakfast in the morning.
  3. I love the four seasons.
  4. I loved math in school. If I hadn’t had ended up with a really awful teacher during the last two years in highschool, I think I might have even considered to study mathematics.
  5. I consider myself borderline-ambidextrous. I can do a lot of things well with my left hand (not write though) and during my broad jump (long jump?) exam in College, I spontaneously and unintentionally switched my takeoff leg from right to left (with nearly the same outcome).
  6. I also could have been an excellent javelin thrower, if I had known before College that I was any good at it.
  7. I’ve never been in any debt.
  8. I’d really like to have a cat, but our landlord doesn’t allow cats in our apartment. It’s a real bummer and the only thing I needed to give up on (at least for now) when we moved there last summer.
  9. All but one of my best friends I have met through letter-writing/blogging/the Internet. (Yes, before there was the Internet, I wrote letters with people I had never met!)
  10. I really enjoy romantic comedies and one of my favorite movies is “Jerry McGuire”. I think Tom Cruise could have been a fantastic comedian.
  11. I sometimes read geology books in bed. I am a nerd.

11 Questions to Answer.

1. When was the last time you felt proud of yourself?

I’m very proud that I stuck out a battle with our health insurance company and finally got them to pay what they were supposed to pay in the first place. If you are not persistent with those jerks, they try to get away with not paying for the most straight-forward bills.

2. What is your definition of success? Of failure?

I guess, success for me is if you’re brave enough to set out on a journey, for just trying to get somewhere…. regardless of how far you get or if you make it to the “imaginary” finish line. Being able to say, I tried and I tried my best, is all that matters in life. In that regard, there is only one definition of failure – not even trying.

3. What is your favorite day of the year?

This is kind of a difficult question to answer, but I guess one of my favorite days must be Christmas when all my family comes together.

4. When you go to the mall, do you go with a specific purchase in mind, or just go to browse?

Usually, IF I go to the mall at all, I go with a specific purchase (or store) in mind, but sometimes end up browsing a few more stores than intended. I guess, that’s the nature of the beast, so to speak. You’re at a mall after all. Having said that, I hardly ever go to the mall for shopping.

5. What is the next vacation you’re looking forward to?

Unfortunately, after just having gotten back from a visit back home, I don’t see any (longer) vacation in my near future. It really makes me want to cry. The meager number of vacation days in the US makes it nearly impossible to go any places, if you plan to go to Europe at least once a year (which I know, for many is a great destination to go, but for me it’s a “necessity” to see family and friends!). So, as of right now, Christmas is going to be my next real vacation, but I am hoping to squeeze in some weekend trips with my husband this summer.

6. Do you use a planner? Paper or electronic?

Yes, I do have a planner – actually, two. I use a paper planner (that my Mom got me for Christmas), because I like to physically write stuff down, and I also use my phone, where I can set reminders and such. The combination of both works well for me.

7. What is your must-have beauty product?

Moisturizer, preferably tinted (because it takes care of two problems at once).

8. What was the last book you read? What did you think about it?

The last book I read was “The Marriage Plot” by Jeffrey Eugenides for #twookclub. I had a hard time getting into the book and to me, the story line was all over the place. There was a lot of ‘unnecessary’ information, IMHO, that didn’t really support the plot in any way. It was just an alright read for me.

9. What Internet browser do you use the most?

Firefox (on Windows) and Safari (on Mac).

10. When was the last time you went to the dentist?

Ha. Funny that you’d ask, because I just made an appointment with a (new) dentist for the middle of February. I think I haven’t been to a dentist in 1,5 years, but mainly because we were very unsatisfied with our previous dentist and had a hard time finding (and getting recommendations) for a new one.

11. Which is the bigger time-suck for you: Facebook or Twitter… or something else?

Definitely Twitter. I use Hootsuite on my phone and it’s fast and convenient to check tweets. I can also access Facebook on my phone, but the interface is more cumbersome, so I usually just glance over the Facebook posts, whereas I am much more diligent in catching up on my Twitter feed.

Here Are My Questions
  1. What’s one of your bad habits that you would like to get rid off?
  2. What is one of your best qualities?
  3. Is there a person that you admire? For what?
  4. What’s your all-time favorite movie?
  5. Do you have a lot of IRL friends that blog or are you the only one?
  6. What’s the best thing that happened to you through blogging?
  7. Do you enjoy flying or is it more of an means to an end for you?
  8. What’s your biggest  emotional outlet?
  9. How often do you check your emails?
  10. Name three things you can’t live without.
  11. Recommend one blog you really enjoy.

I am tagging: Kim, Chrissy, Bri, Celeste, Pia, Karen, Nora, Alli, Erin, Katelin, and Stacey.
Let me know if you’re participating! I’d love to come and check it out!

Random Facts

LET THE FUN BEGIN!

Blog Photo

On this first day of NaBloPoMo, I thought I’d take the opportunity to share some random facts for old and new readers :) Come and get to know me better! Don’t hesitate to ask questions as well.

• I am a fraternal twin. I am 2 minutes older than my twin sister and we don’t look alike at all. Or maybe we do. It’s up for debate.

• According to others, I am one of the most patient persons there is. I hope this is a compliment.

• I am a homebody. I’ll choose an evening on the couch or coffee/dinner with friends over any party night out. This is not to say that I didn’t do my fair share of partying and dancing.

• I can’t sleep without a blanket. Even in the summer, I need at least a sheet to cover up the mid-part of my body.

• I am scared in the dark and I don’t like horror movies (much to J’s dismay, whose favorite holiday is Halloween). When I was little, I often asked my sister if I could sleep in her bed with her.

• I’ve started to learn skiing when I was 4 years old. I got my instructor’s license when I was in College and went on some skiing trips with my old highschool and taught some 9th graders for a couple of winters.

• I’ve always been a Daddy’s girl, but I am also incredibly close with my Mom.

• I love Christmas. It’s my favorite time of the year!

• I’ve known my oldest friend since Kindergarten. It’s amazing to think that we practically shared all of our lives together.

• I love the smell of coffee far more than the taste of it, although I have come to appreciate a good cup of coffee (with just the right amount of milk/creamer).

• I always hated to write in cursive. I think cursive handwriting can be very pretty, but I don’t like my cursive handwriting. As soon as I left elementary school (where they made us write in cursive), I always printed – up to this day.

• I worked as a mail carrier during the summer breaks in College. It was a fun job, because you were outside all day riding around on a bike in gorgeous weather and the work load was significantly reduced during the summer. I also loved delivering (personal) letters and packages to people, knowing that I would put a smile on somebody’s face. However, being a mail carrier in Germany is a tough job. I do not envy the people who do this day in and day out in any kind of weather!

Now, your turn – tell me something about you that I don’t know!

Let’s blog every day in November!

October 27, 2011 filed under: blog stuff, FYI, NaBloPoMo

nablopomo2011

If you’ve been blogging for a while, I am sure have heard about NaBloPoMo before.
Na
tional Blog Posting Month.
Bloggers commit to update their blogs once a day for an entire month.

The whole thing was started in 2006 by Eden Kennedy as a goof based on National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). After she had failed to write a novel in 30 days, she decided that she could at least write a blog post every day for a month.

She put the idea out on the Internet, thinking that she could maybe get some people to join in and you know how people go crazy over ideas like that. The first year there were 2000 participants. By 2010 the official website had over 16,000 members. A blogging movement was born. You can get all your questions answered here.

Originally, the official NaBloPoMo month was November, but the idea has gained such popularity over time that people started doing it every month of the year now. Some months have themes and writing prompts are posted on the website. While I think it’s neat that people can participate any month of the year now (November is usually a busy month for many and maybe not the most convenient), I’ll stick to November.

I can proudly say that I’ve been participating for the last five years. I was one of the first 2000 participants in 2006 and of course, I’ll participate again this year! A lot of bloggers friends have done NaBloPoMo in the past and it’s been fun to have something to look forward to all year. It’s also an opportunity to find new, interesting blogs and meet new people.

To make 30 consecutive blog posts fun for you as well, I’d kindly like to ask for your help. This is your opportunity to chime in and let me know:

  • What would you like to read more about this next month?
  • Anything that you always wanted to ask but never have?
  • Any pictures that you want me to take and post on my blog?
  • Any other ideas, prompts, memes that you’d like to see in a blog post?

Inspire me! Ask away! Who knows when you’ll get this chance again! Also, this is the perfect time to de-lurk if you haven’t done so in the past ;)

Are you participating this year?

Let me know, so that I can come check out your posts and so that we can support each other!

Quiet

April 5, 2011 filed under: FYI, home, my so-called life

tumblr_lelcf4Sz4H1qzm7cco1_500_large
{via}

Sorry for being so quiet over here.

I’ve fallen into a bit of a blogging rut over the last couple of weeks after a weekend of traveling and another weekend of dealing with paperwork, taxes, and what not.

I don’t even know where the time went and what I did between sleep, eat and work.

Oh, yes, we’ve been apartment hunting for the last couple of weeks and let me just say, it’s time-consuming and emotionally exhausting. I’ve been hinting at the fact that we have been wanting to move multiple times on this blog and I was really looking forward to the day when we’d actively start looking, but right now, it just stresses me out.

We’ve looked at at least eight or nine places last weekend and it’s  just so exhausting to make appointments, check out places, get your hopes up to just get disappointed a little later. On the other hand, it’s really exciting to look at potential places that we might call our home in the near future!

I am really really ready to move. I set myself a deadline for July, 1st, because my parents are coming in July and I want a new bigger place by then. However, I’d like to move sooner rather than later, if possible by May, 1st or June, 1st at the latest, because after that I am expecting summer-hot temperatures and I honestly don’t want to move furniture and boxes in 90 or 100 degrees weather.

We have two pending rental applications that we’re waiting to hear back on. One place is pretty much ours, if we want it, but I am really hoping to get a positive response from the other place that we applied for. I just loved it and would very much like to live there. I’ll probably tell you more about it once we know if we’ll get it. I am trying not to jinx it. Would you keep your fingers crossed for us, pretty please!?

What have you been up to?

Currently Vol.3

February 3, 2011 filed under: about me, currently, FYI, lists!

{via}

I haven’t done a “Currently”-post in a while, so I thought I’d let you guys know what I’m currently up to :)

Current Book(s): I’ve started ” Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert some time before Christmas. I’ve been avoiding the movie so far (even though it was part of the in-flight entertainment on my flight to Europe), because I am one of the people who usually prefers the book over the movie version. (Although I am kind of intrigued to see the movie, after I finish the book. I’ve heard mixed reviews about it and want to form my own opinion.)

Current Playlist: I must admit that I am not listening to  a lot of music right now. That is somewhat unusual for me.

Current Shame-Inducing Guilty Pleasure: Licorice.

Current Color: Turquoise.

Current Drink:  Apfelschorle. (Apple Juice with carbonated water.) Yum.

Current Food: I cooked vegetable stew over the weekend. It’s the right season for soup and I’ve been trying different recipes (most of them my Mom’s).

Current Favorite Show: Animals Hoarders. I moved a step up from watching just Hoarders. Haha.

Current Wishlist: A new bigger and nicer apartment. Washer/Dryer in the unit would be nice. Just sayin’. (I am so over sharing laundry facilities!)

Current Needs: Skype dates with my sister (and niece and nephew!), romantic comedies, warm feet.

Current Bane(s) of my Existence: PAPERWORK. I have so much paperwork that needs to get done. I can’t wait for it to be over.

Current Celebrity Crush: Ashton Kutcher. He was adorable in “What happens in Vegas” (saw it the other week) and I really like to see the new movie with him and Natalie Portman, “No strings attached”.

Current Outfit: Jeans, cardigan, two pairs of  socks. My feet get cold so quickly.

Current Excitement: My parents’ visit this summer. I know, it’s about 6 months away, but I am already spending so much time daydreaming about all the things were going to do when they’re here.

Current Link: Today I’d like to recommend a blog to you that I’ve come to  really enjoy. Please check out and say “hello” to Kat over at oceansaway.org. (Perfect timing, because she just added a “blog button” to her sidebar that you could grab while you’re over there!)

Christmas Card Exchange is back

November 24, 2010 filed under: FYI, good things, holidays, NaBloPoMo

{via}

So.  Who wants some snail mail for Christmas?

As you might recall, we actually celebrate Christmas Eve in Germany as opposed to Christmas Day (although the 25th and 26th are official holidays in Germany and they’re usually spend with family as well), which means I have exactly a month to get all my Christmas mail on the way delivered to all those lovely people strewn around the globe.

So, in case you are a relatively new reader around these parts, I quickly want to give you the run down on what this Christmas Card Exchange that I keep bringing up is all about. For a few years now, I’ve been exchanging Christmas cards with some of my blog friends. It’s become somewhat of an annual tradition by now.

It’s basically just a little way to give back to each and every one of you lovely people that I’ve met through this blog. I think it’s one of the nicest things to do to put a handwritten card in someone’s mailbox – especially around Christmas time.

“So, how does it work?”, you ask.

Well, it’s simple. If you want to participate, all you have to do is fill out this form below and, bam, you’ll get a Christmas Card from me in the mail. Just like that. (If you think that you’ll be getting a card from me anyway, because I’ve sent you cards in the past and you don’t think you have to fill out this form, please reconsider in case your address has changed in the last year!)

You can, of course, also send me a card in return, if you’re so inclined, but this is by no means a requirement.

Loading…

I can’t wait to put all the envelopes in the mail!

A little makeover

October 10, 2010 filed under: blog stuff, FYI, this and that

As you can see, this little ol’ blog of mine had a tiny makeover.

The changes are not huge, as I still like it clean and organized around here, but I wanted to work on a few things that I thought needed to change.

If you’re reading this in your reader, please click over and check out the new layout and, more importantly, let me know if anything looks odd, is missing, etc.
Since I’ve been fiddling my way through the CSS code all by myself (and I am self-taught and are still learning something new every step of the way), I’d appreciate your feedback.

I want you to know that I am not quite finished yet with the design. I’ve been working on this behind the scene for a while now and since 90% of the changes that I wanted to make are done, I am now letting you in to help me with the final stretch.

Changes that I’ve already made, in case they are not obvious:

  • A new blog header design.
  • Cute little stars graphics precede the headline of each post.
  • Cleaned up my sidebars.
  • Finally added social media buttons to the top of the right sidebar, so you can easily find other online places at which you can find me.
  • Created a blog button for my blog (this seems to be a must these days!) and you can just grab the code and link back here, if you feel so inclined.

Changes that are still in the works and will appear here shortly:

  • A complete overhaul of my “About page”. I know, I should have done that a long time ago… I haven’t really worked on this for a few years and it’s time for me to update.
  • Planning to grab some of your blog buttons and display them on my blog (in the left sidebar).
  • Also planning to add some more pages to my blog and hopefully move the menu, for easy access, up to underneath the header image (if I can figure this out).

Stay tuned!

And as always, thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment here in my little corner of the Internet.
