A year in review: 2015

December 31, 2015 filed under: reminiscence, review

Another year comes to a close. It’s been a good year. It started out a little rough but then things got better and better. My word for the year was “now” and I am glad that I was able to put this word into action more times than not.

Untitled

January

We rung in the new year at Lake Tahoe in the snow and it was supposed to be a wonderful start into a brand-new year. Unfortunately, a week later we found out (through Google, of all things!) that a dear friend of ours had passed away. Let me tell you, this is not the way you want to find out about someone’s death, and we continued to struggle with grief. I also talked about who I was in January.

February

In February, I baked delicious cheddar-chive-scones (try them!) and wrote about other people’s expectations and assumptions but how the only person who has to be happy with your life is you. I also wrote about the fact that my best friend from home was faced with a second bout of cancer.

Untitled

March

In March, I baked crusty yogurt rolls. I talked about the frustrations with our (old) apartment. I celebrated my birthday and shared what my 39th year was like. I also shared some letters to the universe and movie recommendations.

Untitled

April

I baked Easter bread (recipe here). We bought our Jetta. I shared some dos and don’ts. I talked about my frustrations with my then-job-situation and spent a day at a beautiful spa in Sonoma Valley with my friend Susi. I also started a new blog series called “daily life” and started off with our laundry routine.

Untitled

May

In May, I shared my cardigan knitting project (still not yet finished, ahem). I continued to lament the fact that I wanted to move so badly, but didn’t see it happening any time soon. I blogged about my favorite things: A – Z and my love for ePantry. We also celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary.

Untitled

June

In June, I posted another post in the “daily life” series about the way we meal plan. I shared a recipe for tiny turkey meatballs with balsamic salad (a summer favorite!). I also blogged about my summer goals and our favorite Sacramento eateries. At the end of the month, I welcomed my family back to California for an epic family vacation.

July

In July, I was pretty much absent because of my summer vacation with my family and had a bunch of my blog friends fill in with guest posts. I also shared a review for a new budgeting software, YNAB (You Need A Budget), that I had started using. I blogged about a selection of my favorite (more) natural skin + hair care products. At the end of the month, I also complained about the suckiness  of goodbyes (it never gets easier).

Untitled

August

I finally got around to sharing a recipe for some delicious cinnamon apple oat muffins. I shared some first impressions of our summer family vacation. I blogged about 9 of our favorite weekly (summer) meals.

Untitled

September

I posted more summer vacation recaps. I shared my current workout routine as part of my “daily life” series. I talked about the kindness of ‘strangers’ on the Internet.

Untitled

October

I spent a week doing field work in Palm Springs. I baked Blueberry Greek Yogurt Banana Oat Bread. I finally saw an old friend again after 10 years and we celebrated J’s birthday.

Untitled

November

November is, as always, a busy month and I had a lot to say for NaBloPoMo. I cooked chicken with lemon-garlic-pepper-sauce. I talked about the way we do our grocery budgeting in California. I blogged about more German idioms. I reviewed the Planner Addict Box. I shared the (little) costs of homemade bread. I blogged about blogging. I reviewed the Fitbit One. I talked about  my favorite Trader Joe’s items. I ran my first 10k in Berkeley. I blogged my Inkwell Press planner. I wrote about who I am.

December

In December, we hosted a dear friend for Thanksgiving weekend and took her up to the winterwonderland that is Tahoe. She and I also spent a day in Napa and a weekend in San Francisco biking the Golden Gate Bridge. I talked about all the things I want to do during the holiday season and posted my Christmas wishlist. Last but not least, I was able to share the big news that we’re moving into a house by the end of this year! We spent one last quiet Christmas in our one-bedroom apartment and then packed up our belongings and moved our stuff yesterday.

This, and so much more!, was 2015. In retrospect, it was a really good year and a lot of awesome things happened (also some not so pleasant things, but I don’t want to focus on them). I hope 2015 was good to you too and I am curious to see what the new year will bring.

Happy New Year, friends! I hope you have a wonderful start into the new year 2016!

December Favorites

December2015MonthlyFavorites

1. I’ve been using the Mailbox app for a while and really liked it, but they’ve announced that they’re shutting the app down in February and so I had to look for a new mail app. I am surprised to say, the Outlook app is one of my two favorites from a total of four mail apps that I tried out this month. Which mail app do you use?

2. This is always on my December Favorites list, because there is no Christmas without Speculoos from Trader Joe’s. It’s so tasty with a hot cup of tea!

3.  Got myself another bottle of the  imported Glühwein (mulled wine) from World Market, because that’s the closest I can get to the German Christmas Market feeling this year.

4. Did you see this year’s Charlie Brown Christmas stamps? They’re the cutest. I loved putting them on our Christmas mailings (and was bummed when I ran out and they only had Rudolph stamps left at the post office).

5. I recently tried a new cheese from Trader Joe’s and Vieux Chimay is now one of my favorites. It’s super-tasty and goes well with bread and a glass of (the mulled) wine. You should give it a try!

6. A favorite part of the holiday season for me is watching Christmas movies. I just love them and was able to check quite a few off my list again this year.

Our Christmas

December 29, 2015 filed under: good things, holidays

As I mentioned before, we didn’t travel (for the second year in a row!) for the holidays and although I wish we could have visited my family, it just wasn’t in the cards this year and we tried to make the best of it and to enjoy the last Christmas in our current apartment to the fullest.

On Christmas Eve, we skyped with my family while they were all gathered at my sister’s house for Christmas Eve dinner. It was fun being able to be part of their celebration this way. Then I decorated our tiny Christmas tree, listened to Christmas music and drank copious amounts of coffee and put together a Christmas plate (with After Eight, almond cookies, and other sweet treats).

Untitled

In the afternoon, we drove over to our new home (to check on mail and stuff – three packages arrived while we were there!) and made a stop at the Capitol, because it’s always so pretty during the holidays with the decorations and the tree in front of it. The sky was also gorgeously blue that day!

Untitled

When we came home,  I set our dinner table and then we cooked ourselves a delicious three-course meal.

Untitled

Untitled

We had tomato soup (from scratch), creamy pork chop marsala with mashed potatoes, green beans with bacon bits and savoy cabbage with horseradish-cream sauce. For dessert, we had Dutch apple pie a la mode with whipped cream.

Untitled

We unwrapped some of the lovely presents we received (look at all the packages!) and then settled in to watch “Home alone”.

Untitled

On Christmas Day, I stayed in my PJ’s all day and didn’t do a damn thing. I intentionally decided to celebrate Christmas and don’t start with the packing until after Christmas Day. I watched a few movies (“A Fitzgerald Family Christmas”, “Love Actually”, and “Bad Santa”) from the comfort of my warm and cozy bed and didn’t make it past the back stoop.

Untitled

Last but not least, I want to thank each and every one of you who sent a Christmas card this year.  I always love sending and receiving cards for the holidays and I was thrilled to see them on my wall (until I took them down yesterday and took this picture before they got put in a moving box).

Untitled

I hope you all had a lovely Christmas, too and I want to thank you for being, in one way or another, part of mine.

trying to get into the Christmas spirit. It’s my favorite time of the year, but somehow I’ve had a hard time getting my head wrapped around the fact that it’s already December. Just me?

watching Christmas movies. I am trying to fit in as many as humanly possible despite all the things I have to do. So far I crossed It’s a Wonderful Life, Elf,  The Nightmare Before Christmas, and The Holiday (my favorite!) off my list. Many, many more to go.

drinking mulled wine and pots and pots of tea.

eating Christmas cookies. I only made one kind this year (these ones – I guess they’re originally Austrian, but they’re well known in Germany, too) and they’re delicious!

cooking my mom’s tomato soup, because it’s my favorite soup and the next best thing when not spending time with your family gets you down a few days before Christmas.

sending Christmas cards and a few packages. I was going to send a few little Christmas boxes to my family and friends in Germany, but postage prices have been so insane lately that I decided to order my presents (for the most part) online instead.

packing all the boxes! Moving day is next week!

listening to NKOTB’s Christmas album. Every year this is a must!

reading Drinking. A Love Story by Caroline Knapp for the Postal Bookclub.

hoping for a great 2016. This year, which had started out kinda shitty, turned out to be pretty awesome overall and I’d like this to continue into the new year!

keeping in mind that not everybody looks forward to the holidays because people have strained family relations or are generally stressed by the holiday expectations and trying to do something good for someone less fortunate.

A NEW HOME

December 21, 2015 filed under: good things, home, news

Untitled
So, I have a little bit of some big news to share and I am just going to come right out and say it: J and I just bought a house and we got the keys yesterday.

This is our own little Christmas miracle and to say that we are excited is the understatement of this century.

It’s no secret that I’ve wanted to move from our one bedroom apartment (with drafty windows and little space) for quite some time. There were many reasons in the past couple of years why we couldn’t. When we expected my family for a visit last summer, I was set on moving to a bigger place before they arrived. I’ve looked for rental houses and apartments for the better part of this year and couldn’t find anything we liked (and knew we could afford what with my job contract still up in the air). We ended up staying put and making their visit work in our tiny apartment. But I was back at looking for a new place again right after they left.
But rents have been going up (or so it seems) and upgrading to a 2-bedroom rental in our preferred area with the desired amenities (like central heat and air, sealed double-pane windows, a washer/dryer, etc.) looked increasingly grim.

We honestly didn’t really think about buying until a couple of months ago when we realized hat a mortgage is basically more affordable than rent for comparable places right now.

In October, I went to a couple of open houses just to get a feel for what’s out there and to compare with the rental market. The next day, I took J back to look at one of these houses – again, just to show him what’s out there! – and two days later we made an offer on said house.

A day after that, we were in Escrow. Yeah. That was kind of completely unexpected. And things in this country just move so ridiculously fast. No way in hell did I think we would be moving out of our apartment before this year comes to close – but alas, here we are packing boxes instead of wrapping presents (well, I am doing a little bit of that, too).

The European in me was is still screaming “nooo” (you must know that in Germany people only buy houses if they intend to stay in them forever and ever), but the American mindset is different and I know that many people buy a “starter home” for a few years before moving on again (to something more permanent and/or bigger). Well, that seems just like the situation that we are in and even though part of me was still not sure if we ‘should be doing’ this, I kept telling myself: we’re grown ups and grown ups do indeed do such things.

Adulting, it’s a thing over here.

We’ll be moving next week, only 10 minutes away from where we currently live. We wanted to stay close to our current location and I didn’t want to add unnecessary mileage to my commute. I can still totally avoid the freeway (if I want) and still be at work within 15 minutes. I call that a win.

The house is just the right size and in a great neighborhood and it has almost everything we were looking for; a second bedcraftroom, hardwood floors, central heat and air, new windows, a new kitchen, washer/dryer hookups, and a backyard. Plus, on top of that, is has a detached former-garage-turned-guesthouse. I really haven’t quite processed that we’re going to live there so very soon.

Honestly, this was like finding a needle in a haystack and it’s pretty much all I wanted for Christmas (besides flying home which wasn’t going to happen), so I am beyond grateful.

In case you’re worried about your holiday cards – don’t be, they’ll make it (and some already arrived – yay and thank you!). We’ll have our old apartment until the end of the month and, of course, there will be a change of address forwarding service set up with the postal service. (Fingers crossed that they do their job right.)

It’s a little bit ironic that we found and will be moving into our house just after having not one, but two occasions of hosting visitors this year (a rarity), but hey, that just means we’ll be even that much better set up for whoever decides to visit us next!

A Christmas Wishlist

December 14, 2015 filed under: holidays, lists!, love

christmaswishlist2015

This time of year, holiday gift guides and wishlists pop up all over the Internet. I don’t know how you feel about them, but I really enjoy them. Christmas is by no means all about the gifts (although it might often seem that way), and I feel that the most important thing about the holidays is spending time with family and friends (if that’s possible), but I personally also love the gift-giving. Although for me, it is more about the gesture and thoughtfulness behind the gift than the actual monetary value.

My biggest wish – as always – would be to go home for the holidays, but since this won’t be happening (for the second year in a row – womp, womp!), I am going to fill my holiday season with all the holiday cheer I can get my hands on.
Sharing a little wishlist of pretty (and functional!) things that would be lovely to have is one way to do this. A little dreaming has never hurt anyone.

1.) My friend S had a PinqPonq Backpack when she visited and I thought it looked awesome. She told me it’s made in Köln from recycled resources. I love that. It’s also very functional and light-weight.

2.) I am not at all opposed to gift cards. I used to think that gift cards are thoughtless and boring, but to be honest, I changed my mind about it. Personal gifts are great and definitely preferred, but gift cards are a great alternative if you just don’t have a great gift idea for someone and if you pick out a gift card that you know someone will enjoy and appreciate. Plus, they’re easy to ship.

3.) I will just come out and admit: the more people I see wearing Doc Martens these days, the more I want a new pair. I used to wear them all the time when I was younger. Do you think I could still pull them off?

4.) I’ve had my eye on a cast-iron skillet for a while and I think that sooner or later I should invest in one.

5.) We’ve had our wonderful, magical Tempurpedic bed for a few years now, but have not invested in a bed frame. I think I’d like to change that sometime. I haven’t completely made up my mind of what I would want, but I do like this metal one from Ikea.

6.) A Kitchenaid Mixer – yup. This one is still on my wishlist. One of these days!

7.) This leather ringer binder notebook is so pretty.

8.) These mini latte mugs. Oh my goodness, aren’t they beautiful? I want one in every color. Ok, ok, if I had to choose, teal and red are my favorites.

What’s on your wishlist?

So much to do, so little time…

December 11, 2015 filed under: holidays, lists!

Untitled

Christmas seriously snuck up on me this year. I know, news flash: it comes around at the same time every year, but I still didn’t see it coming. Christmas is only 14 days away (WHAT?) and while I love this time of the year, it’s also always a little stressful what with the things I need/want to get done. I feel like I am way behind on my to-do-list and I have some serious “squeezing stuff in” to do.

★ Finalize my Christmas gift list and finish some of the actual (online) shopping. I am usually more organized and start Christmas shopping well in advance, but this year? Not so much. I have done some brainstorming and I always have a “gift ideas”-list on hand throughout the year, so I hope checking this off my list won’t be too painful. Of course, there are always the people that are generally hard to shop for, and last minute ideas will have to do.

★ Finish the photo book that I am putting together for my family from their visit in the States this summer. I really hope I can finish it in time. This is so much work.

★ Get my holiday cards and gifts sent out. As you know, I always do a Christmas card exchange and that means I send cards to a lot of people. On top of that, I usually try to craft all my cards by hand, which I totally had to forgo this year (for multiple reasons and I apologize for that). I will be happy if I get our cards out the door in time at all.

★ Bake some Christmas cookies. It’s part of the holiday season for me and everyone deserves some damn Christmas cookies.

★ Spend a day in San Francisco when all the holiday decorations are up. I actually have checked this off my list last weekend when I got to spend more time with my friend S. last week.

★ Decorate our tiny tree. I’ve long debated if I am going to get our tree out this year, but because it’s fake and tiny, I don’t see why I would rob myself of the joy of having a tree. I don’t know, it’s just an important part of the holiday season for me. I love seeing all the decorated and lit trees in other people’s windows as well. I am looking forward to it all year. It makes the dark winter month seem so much cozier and brighter.

★ Make some donations for a good cause. I always try to do this every year. It’s a small gesture with a huge impact on the less fortunate.

★ Watch Christmas movies. I love Christmas movies, especially family-centered stories where – after lots of drama – everyone eventually comes together around the dinner table, or romantic Christmas love stories with tear-jerking happy endings. I know it’s a bit cheesy, but honestly, who doesn’t like “Love actually”, “The Holiday”, or “The Family Stone”? Don’t you tell me that you’re immune to the overload of feelings during the holiday season. I don’t believe that. Yesterday, we watched “It’s a wonderful life” – one of my favorites!

★ Take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the season! I want for things to slow down (I know this is partly a mindset, so I am working on that!), take a sip of Glühwein (mulled wine), walk around the neighborhood and admire the Christmas lights, and just marvel at the magic of the season!

What’s on your ‘to-do’ (and ‘to-enjoy’!) list the next two weeks?

hello, december.

December 2, 2015 filed under: friends, holidays

Here we are. We’ve entered the last month of 2015 and I don’t know how yet another year is almost over. I was just talking about this with my friend last weekend and how the last few years have flown by at a perceived faster rate.

I am usually looking forward to December. I love the holiday season and anticipate it with glee. This year, December has totally snuck up on me, though. I feel like I have been behind on everything ever since my family left in July. And so much has happened in the last few weeks – mostly good things, happy things (that I’ll tell you about soon!), but it’s been a very unusual holiday season for us so far.

We usually don’t travel for Thanksgiving and it’s usually a low-key weekend where I get a lot of Christmas preparations done. Not so this year with a surprise visit from my dear (childhood) friend, S. Don’t get me wrong, it was amazing to (finally) have someone (other than my family) visit from Germany and even more amazing to host someone for ThanksFriendsgiving.

Untitled

We cooked a lovely meal, drank tea and wine, chatted the hours away, and took a spontaneous overnight trip up to the winter wonderland that is Lake Tahoe right now, but it also meant that I didn’t get anything Christmas-related done.

Untitled

The next weekend is going to look the same, as we’ll will be hanging out (and exploring California) with S some more and taking advantage of this opportunity to spend time together for as long as she is here (she’ll be leaving on the 16th).

I guess I’ll just have to go with the flow this holiday season!

Don’t forget to sign up for my holiday card exchange if you haven’t already!!

30: NaBloPoMo – it’s a wrap!

November 30, 2015 filed under: good times, NaBloPoMo

goodbye_november

Today is the last day of NaBloPoMo!  We did it – again! If you also participated and made it to the end – congratulations! If you tried, but didn’t quite manage to blog every day – kudos to you for trying! Life does get in the way sometimes, so don’t fret it! I would never ever try to blog every day for the rest of the year, but challenging myself to write more regularly for one full month is always something I look forward to.

For me, this month fly by in the blink of an eye. This month has been very full, but also a lot of fun.  I can’t believe that tomorrow is the first day of the last month of 2015 and we’re wrapping up yet another year very soon.

Thanks for sticking around this month,  and thanks for always reading and commenting.
