So, tell me – how was your Halloween weekend? Did you do something fun? Did you go to a Halloween party? Did you dress up?

J and I didn’t really have any plans, so our weekend ended up being pretty laid-back and – to J’s dislike – not very scary. I made J go to the Pumpkin Patch with me on Saturday to pick out some pumpkins (for decorcation). I was really tempted to try the “Corn Maze” (never done it!), but it was too crowded, so we didn’t get in line.  We watched “Beetle Juice” on Friday (remotely scary) and then the very un-halloweenish, but nevertheless very worthwhile movie “Adjustment Bureau” yesterday. It was one of the movies that made me think and nod “Yup, that’s a Matt Damon movie”.

The weather is still gorgeous, though I’ve had to turn on the heater once or twice in the evenings and early mornings because it was too cold in our apartment. We’re kind of in the middle between the late summer and fall and honestly? I like it that way. I get to snuggle up with a blanket and hot tea in the evening, while I still enjoy 80 degree-weather during the day. I can totally live with that :)

Other good things this weekend:

skyping with my aunt for her 50th birthday ♥ early morning coffee ♥ getting laundry and paperwork done ♥ sleeping in ♥ shopping at Trader Joe’s ♥ blog reading ♥ late night crocheting while watching reruns of “Friends” ♥ staying up til 2 a.m. ♥ reading ♥ hot tea ♥ fresh bagels ♥ sunshine and 81°F ♥ ice-cream sandwich ♥ snuggling up on the couch ♥ candles ♥ watching little iPhone-movies of my niece and nephew ♥ taking and editing photos ♥ socks and blankets ♥ home-cooked dinners

Let’s blog every day in November!

October 27, 2011 filed under: blog stuff, FYI, NaBloPoMo

nablopomo2011

If you’ve been blogging for a while, I am sure have heard about NaBloPoMo before.
Na
tional Blog Posting Month.
Bloggers commit to update their blogs once a day for an entire month.

The whole thing was started in 2006 by Eden Kennedy as a goof based on National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). After she had failed to write a novel in 30 days, she decided that she could at least write a blog post every day for a month.

She put the idea out on the Internet, thinking that she could maybe get some people to join in and you know how people go crazy over ideas like that. The first year there were 2000 participants. By 2010 the official website had over 16,000 members. A blogging movement was born. You can get all your questions answered here.

Originally, the official NaBloPoMo month was November, but the idea has gained such popularity over time that people started doing it every month of the year now. Some months have themes and writing prompts are posted on the website. While I think it’s neat that people can participate any month of the year now (November is usually a busy month for many and maybe not the most convenient), I’ll stick to November.

I can proudly say that I’ve been participating for the last five years. I was one of the first 2000 participants in 2006 and of course, I’ll participate again this year! A lot of bloggers friends have done NaBloPoMo in the past and it’s been fun to have something to look forward to all year. It’s also an opportunity to find new, interesting blogs and meet new people.

To make 30 consecutive blog posts fun for you as well, I’d kindly like to ask for your help. This is your opportunity to chime in and let me know:

  • What would you like to read more about this next month?
  • Anything that you always wanted to ask but never have?
  • Any pictures that you want me to take and post on my blog?
  • Any other ideas, prompts, memes that you’d like to see in a blog post?

Inspire me! Ask away! Who knows when you’ll get this chance again! Also, this is the perfect time to de-lurk if you haven’t done so in the past ;)

Are you participating this year?

Let me know, so that I can come check out your posts and so that we can support each other!

Hey peeps, how was your weekend?

We had a nice relaxing weekend with not too much planned. I love weekends that are kind of open when I can do things at my own pace.

Good things this last weekend:

sleeping in ♥ gorgeous fall weather (still warm enough for shorts and sandals) ♥  a nice walk ♥ coffee ♥ fresh German bread from the bakery ♥ blog reading ♥ a trip to Michaels ♥ lots and lots of crocheting ♥ watching movies ♥ skyping with my niece for her THIRD birthday ♥ reading my book (Yay! Really trying to make more time for reading!) ♥ cooking a fall favorite (recipe to come) ♥ pizza with visitors from Germany ♥ Sunday afternoon nap ♥ watching “Sister Wives” in the evening

How was your last weekend?

Summer Tales – Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon

October 24, 2011 filed under: family, photography, summer tales, travel, USA

I am recapping the three weeks of fun that I had with my family this summer.
See all related posts under the category:  summer tales.
[Warning this post is even photo-heavier than the previous ones.]

Page, AZ had two more highlights of our trip in store for us. In the morning (8/2) we headed out to the Horseshoe Bend Overlook, just a few miles outside of Page right of Hwy 89. The 3/4 mile  hike begins from a large parking area. The wide, easy-to-follow trail leads quickly up a low, sandy hill. Then the trail descends to the rim of the canyon.  As you approach the overlook, sand gives way to bare rock – Navajo sandstone laid down by wind over 15 million years in the early part of the Jurassic Period, some 180 million years ago. The view from the edge of the canyon was simply breath-taking. The overlook is at the top of a steep orange colored cliff several hundreds of feet high. Down below, an emerald green Colorado river makes a horse-shoe shaped bend (hence the name) before rushing towards the Grand Canyon. I really wish I had a wide-angle lens for my camera, because this place would have called for one, but I was able to capture most of the river bend in this picture.

My Mom was clearly concerned when Basti and I were looking for the best spots to take pictures, as there are no guardrails or anything at the overlook. After we had taken all the pictures in the world that we wanted, we headed back up the trail to the car.

After a short quick-stop at the hotel to stock up on drinks and snacks, we headed to the meeting point for our Antelope Canyon Tour. The Antelope Canyon area is administered by the Navajo tribe and can be visited only when accompanied by authorized tour guides.

Our group of about 20 people was put on two 4WD trucks and then we were driven to the entrance of Upper Antelope Canyon. We drove through a wide dry river bed which was covered in red Navajo Sandstone sand. When we entered the river bed, our driver warned us that the ride was about to get a little “bumpy”. The guy was not kidding as we had to hang on to the guardrails to stay in our seats, but it was great fun.

IMG_9101

Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon, which is very narrow and formed by the wear of water rushing through rock. So the small opening in the rock wall looked like this:

IMG_9289

It was really strange to step into the canyon, which is relatively wide at the opening, but gets narrower and narrower the further you go in.

We had booked the 2,5 hour photography tour, which – let me tell you – was a very wise choice. We had a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour guide. Not only did he provide us with the best spots and angles to capture the sunbeams dancing on the canyon walls, he also  helped us with camera settings and little tricks how to use the canyon walls and floor as a “make-shift” tripod to stabilize the camera. We just had an absolutely amazing time!

We reached the other end of the canyon in – as it seemed – a blink of an eye and could have spent even more time gazing at the beautiful creations of nature. When we made our way back through the canyon, we could tell how the lighting had been changing over the course of two hours and how different the canyon looked now. The bright orange and yellow colors from earlier had changed to more muted reds and browns. I am still totally mesmerized looking at those pictures and thinking back to this amazing day and we all agreed that this had been an experience of a lifetime!

To top off our amazing experience in Page, we made our way over to  Glen Canyon Dam and the Wahweap Marina on Lake Powell. My Mom and I even dipped our hot feet into the cool waters.

Awkward & Awesome

This is a regular feature post on my blog. See the archives here.

AWKWARD

  • Remember when I said that it’s fall over here in California last week? Yeah, just kidding. We’re back to the lower 80’s and sunshine. It’s the golden October after all!
  • Passive-aggressive emails. I mean, just tell me, how exactly do you want me to respond to this?
  • J absolutely loooves Halloween, but I am not really sure what we’re going to do for Halloween this year. Looks like it’s just going to be just the two of us… and I really don’t like horror movies. Any suggestions?
  • I really need to go back to the gym. I feel so awful about how long I have neglected something that I usually consider a pretty basic part of my weekly routine.

AWESOME

  • I can still wear my beloved sandals a little longer. (Well, some people will wear sandals throughout the winter months! That struck me when I first came to California. I probably won’t be one of those people, but I do enjoy the fall sandals-weather!)
  • My niece will be turning three years old tomorrow. T-H-R-E-E! I can’t wait to ‘hug ‘ her and ‘squeeze’ her on Skype!
  • 100 followers via GFC on my blog. Weeee! Not that I am counting, but thank you so much for reading (and commenting)!
  • Today is my Friday! I know I am making you jealous. I am sorry (or not) :)
  • I am looking forward to some extra crafty times in the coming weeks. I have Christmas cards and handmade presents to make and I have tons of ideas that I need to put into action.
  • One of my friends, who had been single for a long time, told me yesterday that she fell in love with someone and that makes me so over the moon happy for her!

Happy Thursday, peeps!

On someone’s birthday…

October 18, 2011 filed under: birthday, love

Today J turns 29 years old young.

It’s the tenth of his birthdays that we celebrate together (you do the math on how old he was then).

Ten years ago, we hardly knew each other on his birthday. I hadn’t really planned on getting him a gift or anything, wasn’t even sure what he was going to be doing on his birthday, but I had offered to spend time with him if he didn’t have any other plans. He didn’t and he gladly accepted. It was a special night, albeit the fact that we did very ordinary things. We walked. We sat on park benches. We talked. We poured our hearts out about stuff that some couples maybe never talk about.  We got late night coffee and a bag of Dorritos that we shared on a bench in the parking lot of a little shopping center. Romantic, I know!

It was nothing fancy, rather simple really, but nonetheless one of the nights we both remember very fondly. I guess, when you just start getting to know each other, it doesn’t really matter what you do as long as you do it together.

Tonight I am taking J out for dinner. I have a couple of gifts for him (which I hope he’ll like) and then maybe, we’ll end the night with a walk and  late night coffee and Dorritos… just like ten years ago.
