Monthly Favorites | December

December 31, 2019 filed under: monthly favorites

1. When I visited my family in May, my sister passed on this Naketano Long Hoodie to me. Naketano was a popular German clothing brand (which sadly has been discontinued) and I was trying to get my hands on one of their awesome, cozy sweaters. I bought one online (from leftover stock) and my sister had this one and decided to pass it on to me. I love it. It’s so comfortable and cozy. Plus, it reminds me of my sister every time I wear it.

2. As you might remember, the Revlon Hair Dryer and Volumizer* was on my Christmas wishlist and someone snagged it for me from my Amazon Wishlist. I can already attest to the positive reviews I’ve read from others.

3. The Friends LEGO set* was a Christmas gift I didn’t know I wanted, but it’s giving me much joy this holiday season!

4. My friend Tanja gave me this 4Ocean bracelet* for Christmas, and not only is it pretty, it also supports a good cause. 4Oceans’ purpose is to end the ocean plastic crisis and every purchase supports the clean up of 1 pound of trash from the ocean and coastlines. They have bracelets representing different ocean inhabitants (this is the manatee bracelet).

5. It’s probably not a surprise that Trader Joe’s Organic Breakfast Blend Coffee* made my December favorites’ list, because I took a break from coffee for three weeks and couldn’t wait to get reunited.

6. I don’t often bake cookies throughout the year (if not to say, never), but I love me some Vanillekipferl for Christmas.

7. Christmas Cards make me the happiest in December. But you already knew that.

What was one of your favorite things this month?

Our Christmas

December 30, 2019 filed under: good times, holidays

The weekend before Christmas, I finally got around to baking some holiday cookies and since it’s just two people eating over here, I stuck with one of our favorite cookies: Vanillekipferl.

Saturday night, we walked the ‘Fabulous 40’s’ to look at all the Christmas lights. It’s always fun to see how many people go all out for the holidays, but it can also get pretty crazy around these neighborhood blocks, as so many people from all over come around during the holidays to see the lights. Our street is usually used for parking, so it’s is often packed in December. Thank goodness, we have a driveway!

We started Christmas off with an unexpected dismissal from work on the 24th, which resulted in my lounging around in my PJs on Christmas Eve morning and waiting to FaceTime with my family (who were all gathered at my sister’s house again this year for Christmas Eve). It’s always great to be able to “join” them via FaceTime, but also always sad to not be there in person.

In the afternoon, I set our table for dinner and started cooking around 5 pm. I always make a point to plan a three-course meal,  print a menu card, and decorate our table, even if it’s just the two of us. It puts me into the Christmas mindset and I simply love doing it.

Ok, so the (frozen) potato croquettes that I bought turned out to be tater tots. That’s fine. They were still delicious, just not what I expected.  Will have to make them from scratch next time.

This is what Christmas presents under the tree look like when all of your family and friends are far away. Do you think Amazon will start sending Christmas presents in pretty wrapping any time soon?

Untitled

We opened a few gifts on Christmas Eve (mostly the ones from overseas), but also saved a few for Christmas Day (combining both German and American traditions). We also watched “A child’s Christmas in Wales“.

I baked fresh scones Christmas morning and put on a big pot of coffee. Yes, what you see there was my first cup of coffee in 21 days and it was glorious!
We also unwrapped a few more presents.

I spent most of the afternoon drinking tea, eating cookies, watching Elf, and building this:

Are you jealous? You should be. I had almost forgotten how much fun LEGOs are until I started putting this set together. Turns out, you’re never too old for LEGOs.

As I mentioned before, December 26 is an official ‘second Christmas holiday’ in Germany, so I tend to take this day off as well. I spent most of the day in my lounge pants, I worked on my blog for a bit (you might have noticed a few minor changes around here, like the header image) and had more tea and cookies (just because). In the evening, we watched ‘It’s a wonderful life‘, because there’s no Christmas around here without George Bailey.

As always,  the holiday cards that I received over the last few weeks were my favorite! Thanks so much to everyone who sent out cards this year. If you don’t see your card, it might still be in transit.

Untitled

How was your Christmas? I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Currently | December

December 26, 2019 filed under: currently, holidays

LOVING | my new mug(s). (I got a total of 4 new mugs over the holidays and I couldn’t be happier!)

ENJOYING | the 2nd Christmas holiday. Because it’s a holiday in Germany and everyone should get not one, but two holidays for Christmas. Period.

EATING | holiday cookies and scones.

DRINKING | my first cup of coffee in 21 days. Hallelujah.

WATCHING | holiday movies. They’re my favorite. So far, I’ve managed to see quite a few classics, but I also found a German holiday mini-series on Netflix that I am still hoping to watch!

READING | Ugh. I was reading “Normal People” by Sally Rooney and then my loan expired and I wasn’t finished. Now I have to wait to be able to borrow it from the library again.

HOPING | that you all had some good times with your family and friends over the holidays, and also

WISHING | I could have hugged some of mine.

THANKFUL | for all the friends that sent Christmas cards and little packages in the mail this holiday season. It really made the holidays that much sweeter!

ADORING | all the Christmas decorations in the neighborhood.

SENDING | Christmas cards and a few packages. You must know that wrapping gifts and putting together little packages is probably one of my most favorite things to do around the holiday season, but most of my Christmas gifts were ordered online this year, because the added cost of shipping is just insane (especially when sending overseas), but also deprives me of the gift wrapping part.

KEEPING IN MIND that not everybody looks forward to the holidays because people have strained family relations, or are far away from their loved ones, or or are generally stressed by the holiday expectations. I see you. Do what feels right.

What’s going on with you currently?

Five Things Friday Vol. 5

December 20, 2019 filed under: Friday Five

Five Things Friday: just five things I’m thinking about or things that made my week, or things that I otherwise feel like sharing.

You guys, I don’t know why I haven’t thought about this earlier, but if you have some cloves in your spice cabinet, put some in a little bowl on your living room table and enjoy the beautiful Christmassy smell. It’s so lovely.

*  *  *

I have exactly three work days left in 2019. I was already planning to take off the 26th (as this is an official second Christmas holiday in Germany and I insist to have the day off as well), and then on Wednesday, on Impeachment Day, Trump gave all federal employees a day off on Christmas Eve. This might be the only good thing he’s ever done for me. Haha. Since I am planning to facetime with my family on Christmas Eve (when they’re all gathered at my sister’s house), this just makes things a lot easier for me (and I don’t have to find a quiet place during my lunch break to do it).

*  *  *

I haven’t baked any Christmas cookies yet and will remedy this asap. I am baking Vanillekipferl tomorrow. What’s your favorite Christmas cookie?

*  *  *

I saw my dear friend Susi again last Sunday for the last girl time of this year. We hung out, had tea and even took a dip into the hot tub. Oh, don’t mind if we do!  Just the right thing to do to relax and catch up before the holiday craziness (well, it’s not going to be so crazy around here, actually, but you know what I mean)!

*  *  *

Today is ‘reveal day’ for the Secret Santa Mug Swap 2019. I was hoping to share with you all mugs that have been exchanged this year, but I’ll have to postpone the blog post, as sadly, not all participants have received their packages yet or have posted their mugs. But rest assured, I’ll share as soon as everyone has received their swap packages. In the meantime, go check out the hashtag #secretsantamugswap2019 on Instagram for some sneak peeks!

A wish list

December 16, 2019 filed under: holidays, lists!, love

I admit, I am kinda late putting my wish list out there, haha, but in all honesty, I am not expecting any of this under the Christmas tree. I am just having a little fun. I love the holiday gift guides that are popping up all over the Internet this time of year, and I have to admit that I love shopping for small gifts for my family and friends around this time of year.

Yes, I know, Christmas is not all about the gifts (and I’d prefer time with people over gifts any day), but I also love gift-giving and they don’t have to be expensive. For me, it is more about the gesture and thoughtfulness behind the gift than the actual monetary value.

I am always trying to fill my holiday season with all the holiday cheer I can get my hands on and sharing a little wishlist of pretty (and functional!) things that would be lovely to have is one way to do this. To be honest, I don’t really need anything, but it’s fun to browse and look at the things I’ve bookmarked throughout the year.

It’s a list of (mostly) inexpensive things that I think would make great holiday gifts and you who knows, maybe you find some last minute gift inspiration here. Some may be in my future budget, some are just things that caught my eye, but  which I probably won’t get (right now or ever), but a little day dreaming hasn’t hurt anyone, am I right?

1. Mountains-long-sleeve shirt // 2. planner // 3. door mat //4. gym bag // 5. hair dryer //
6. running pants // 7. travel pillow // 8. stacking rings // 9. socks // 10. hand-held vaccuum //
11. mug // 12. satin pillows // 13. travel dispenser //14. shower curtain  //

1. I found this Mountains-long-sleeve shirt and it’s so me!

2. I am still on the search for a new planner for 2020. I am not sure if I want to continue bullet journaling at this point and I am intrigued by this Good Busy Planner.

3. Isn’t that door mat the cutest?

4. You won’t believe me if I tell you that the gym bag I am currently using is 26 years old. I bought it at my first trip to the US (Boston) in 1993. You think it’s time for a new one? This gym bag looks nice and roomy.

5. I have heard so many good reviews about the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer & Volumizer from some of you guys and now I feel like I need it, too.

6.I realized that I could use some extra long running pants for the winter months and I love the look of these. They also have a pocket (which is imperative!)

7. I don’t think I travel enough to really need a fancy travel pillow, but then again this travel pillow looks so soft and comfy.

8. I already have 5 of those stacking rings, but I’d love to add some more.

9. If in doubt, Balega running socks are always a good idea.

10. We have a kinda old and cumbersome vacuum, that I don’t really use this much… but for the areas that I use it, a hand-held vaccuum would be so much easier.

11. In case you haven’t met me, Hi, I am San and I have a mug addiction…aaand, I already bought this Red Jolly Heart Mug for myself. I really can’t be left alone at World Market.

12. I’ve heard that satin pillows are really good for your skin and hair, can someone confirm this? I’d love to try it out.

13. Do you want me to confess how many times I have bought cheap travel bottles that then leaked into my bag?  This travel dispenser seems like a really good solution.

14. Isn’t this the most beautiful shower curtain?

What’s on your wish list?

Five Things Friday Vol. 4

December 13, 2019 filed under: my so-called life

Five Things Friday: just five things I’m thinking about or things that made my week, or things that I otherwise feel like sharing.

I am happy to report that I am officially busy at work again. I won’t complain, don’t worry. After so many weeks of twiddling my thumbs (figuratively speaking), I was ready for some action, but I didn’t mean for five people to demand my time and skills all at once! Why does it always go from nothing to (almost) too much?

*  *  *

I am currently on Day 7 without coffee. I KNOW. Don’t even ask. I am doing a 14-day treatment with Nexium for my GERD issues and I decided to also cut out coffee (and a few other things) for the time being. In all honesty, it’s not as hard as I anticipated. I did get a headache the first day (duh!)  that lingered for 36 hours, but since then I’ve been just fine with drinking tea. BUT, I still really miss my morning coffee quite a bit and hope we get reunited soon.

*  *  *

The first holiday cards have been arriving in the mail and I am so excited. Holiday mail is one of my favorite things and I love sending and receiving notes from family and friends near and far! We have a little closet in the living room and I use the door to display all the cards. What do you do with the cards you receive?

*  *  *

I also received my Secret Santa Mug Swap package already and OMG, you guys, it’s amazing. My swap partner really outdid herself! She picked out a really beautiful mug and included some other lovely goodies in the package that I can’t wait to share with you next week!

*  *  *

My parents sent me pictures last week from their holiday baking extravaganza, aka “spritz cookie-making”, which is a holiday tradition in our family ever since I can remember. Everybody gets involved. My Mom prepares the dough, my Dad and the kids (first my sister and I, then my cousin, now my niece and nephew) make the cookies. My Dad used to have a manual meat mincer and cookie inset that he used for years and years, but recently they have upgraded to an electric food grinder attachment for a stand mixer. Everybody in the family can bring a cookie tin that gets filled to the top with spritz cookies. Oh, how I wish I could be home for the holidays.

What I read in November

December 12, 2019 filed under: books

Let me liken my reading routine to a roller coaster, my friends. It’s been going up and down and right and left and I am just hanging on for dear life.

But I lied in my last post. I finished not one, but two books in November. Imagine my delight when I realized that. I even started a third one but am nowhere near done. Okay then. Two is better than none, am I right? Little by little, the bird builds its nest.

This will be my undoing: Living at the Intersection of Black, Female and Feminist in (white) America by Morgan Jerkins (★★★☆☆)

This book was all over the place for me. When I started writing down some of my thoughts, I realized that I had a lot to say. It could be a whole separate blog posts by the length of it.

Bottom line: There is much to learn. Jerkins shares some highly insightful personal experiences. However, this is what they are: personal experiences. The title of the book felt misleading in a way, because you expect a collection of essays about race, gender and feminism, but instead you get a random selection of personal essays that are not necessarily universally applicable, not even within the black community, I think.

Some of Jerkins essays were brilliant and eye-opening, some were – IMHO – superfluous at best, but some were also full of stereotypes and generalizations (mostly about white people), which she tries to desperately dissipate about her own community, but which she nonchalantly perpetuates about other racial communities. While she calls herself female and feminist in the title of her book, I also didn’t appreciate how dismissive she was of other female experiences.

I felt there was a disconnect between what Jerkins put out there and what she was trying to accomplish. She flip flopped and contradicted herself a lot. At times, it felt like all she wanted was to fit into the white world and when she realized that this wasn’t possible, she decided to embrace her black womanhood, but blamed everything that didn’t go her way on being black.

I think it is always hard to know when we are being rejected or discriminated against because of our race or appearance, and when it is because of who we are as a person. Jerkins seemed unable to recognize that possibility or was unwilling to consider it further, which made her conclusions less convincing.

She gave many examples of interactions that she perceived as borderline racist or at a minimum oblivious on the part of her counterpart, however, she didn’t offer any instructions on how to fix these situations. This is being complicated by the fact that I don’t think that Jerkins speaks for all black Americans.

I am not at all dismissing the experience of a black woman in America, I can only imagine (which is to say, cannot imagine at all) what it’s like to be a black woman in America. But aside from all the generalizations, there was a whole lot of privilege seeping out between the lines. She grew up with a lot of opportunities, went to an Ivy League school, and doesn’t seem sure how to reconcile that with being black.

I wanted to love this book, I really did, but sadly, I didn’t. It did give me a lot to think about though and I’d be interested to hear more about it from other people who have read it. (Sorry for the wordiness.)

My Japser June by Laurel Snyder  (★★★★☆)

I should have known this was a YA novel. As you know, I can only do those type of books in moderation, but I quite enjoyed this one. This was a sad, but sweet story about loss, grief, loneliness and an unexpected friendship that turns out to be the lifesaver for two young teenage girls that both go through some tribulations and who find comfort and solace in each other.

The story was a little slow at times, but maybe that was intentional, to feel a deeper connection with the characters, to let you sit with their emotions for a little while. And while I am a sucker for happy endings, the end of the story was almost a bit too-good-to-be-true-ish, but still it was a worthwhile read. Would recommend it.

What did you read in November? Anything you’d like to recommend? Leave a comment, and then add me on Goodreads to keep in touch.

Our Thanksgiving

December 6, 2019 filed under: holidays, USA

Before we’re midway through December and have all but forgotten about Thanksgiving, let me recap real quick: four glorious days off and nowhere we had to be.

We stayed put over the holiday weekend and it was the best decision. This year, I finally decided to run the “Run to Feed the Hungry” Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning. It’s the largest Turkey Trot in the country with almost 28,000 participants. I had contemplated doing that for the last few years and always made excuses. Since the Turkey Trot took place in our new neighborhood and it was supposed to be cold, but dry, I really didn’t have an excuse this time and I am really glad I participated this year. It was fun to see so many people come out on Thanksgiving morning to support a good cause.

I got back home around 10 a.m., took a nice, long, hot shower, made a big pot of fresh coffee and then started the kitchen shenanigans by taking care of first things first: baking an apple pie.

In the early afternoon, we started preparing our Thanksgiving TurkeyChicken. As side dishes, we had mashed potatoes, gravy, roasted green beans, and delicious apple-cornbread-stuffing this year. I also made some freshly whipped cream to go along with our apple pie.

We set our table – it’s important to me to decorate our table, even if it’s only ‘just us’ – and we had some crackers and cheese while the bird was in the oven. Our little feast was ready around 5 p.m.

It was a nice and cozy day, just the way we like it. Since we don’t have a fireplace anymore, we used  the fake fireplace on our TV to create an extra-cozy atmosphere (and it worked for me!).

On Friday, we got our grocery shopping done (who knew the supermarkets would be empty on Black Friday!), but otherwise I did not do any shopping at all. Are you a Black Friday shopper and scored some good deals?

We had leftovers for dinner and I got some knitting done in the evening.

On Saturday,  I ran out early in the morning to pick up our Holiday Cards and stopped at a couple more stores (Saturdays after Black Fridays are delightfully light when it comes to traffic/store customers). After I came back I pretty much stayed in my lounge pants for the rest of the day. A storm was moving in and it started raining in the afternoon. We did get out our Christmas decorations (yes, we waited until after Thanksgiving). We had some take-out for dinner, lit a candle and also watched our first Christmas movie in an attempt to get into the holiday spirit. (It totally worked.)

On Sunday, I skipped my long run because it was raining non-stop. Light, but steady – just what we need here in California right now. I slept in a little later and then had my usual phone calls with my family. I puttered around the house for the rest of the day and worked on my blog a bit (have you noticed that my website-loading is slow? I am trying to fix it but at this point, I don’t really have any idea what I am doing. )

How was your Thanksgiving? Busy or laid-back like ours?

P.S. Since I am posting this on December, 6 – Happy St. Nicholas Day!

Monthly Recap | November

December 3, 2019 filed under: my so-called life, recap

READ

I only read just one book.  It’s still slow going around here when it comes to reading, but I am keeping at it. Review to come.

COOKED

A hen for Thanksgiving with mashed potatoes, stuffing and green beans. We also cooked quite a few soups and stews, and as always, pasta dishes. We do like carbs around here. You should give this light alfredo a try!

WATCHED

I haven’t watched much TV lately to be honest, just the usual Sunday night 90-day fiancé guilty pleasure for some brainless entertainment. Ha. But, we did watch our first Christmas movie of the season over Thanksgiving weekend. More to come.

LISTENED TO

I listened to NPR in the car, does that count? I also caught up on a couple of podcast episodes by my journalist-friend who lives in India right now. It’s been interesting to learn more about her life there through her reporting.

BOUGHT

We bought some new Asics sneakers for Jon. I bought some candles, a new workout shirt, and a mug for the Secret Santa Mug Swap that I am hosting again.

RAN (and cycled)

I ran 35 miles and cycled another 55 miles. I am hoping to improve my running mileage again soon, but for now I am happy with what I get done.

GOING-ONS

+ As you might have noticed, I spent a lot of time on this good ol’ blog of mine in November, as I was participating in NaBloPoMo again (as I have for many years). It’s always a fun exercise in getting back into a writing habit.

+ I’ve been struggling with what the doctor determined are some minor GERD issues. I don’t have typical heartburn, as in acid reflux, just an achy stomach and weird sensations in the chest and I just want it to go away. I haven’t been able to nail down what causes it, so I’ve been using Tums, when needed, and I am trying some diet changes to see if that helps.

+ We spent a weekend in Ventura to visit Jon’s family. It had been a while since we were down there and it was good to visit some familiar places (aka the beach and pier!).

+ We got the first real rain of the season and it’s been a long way coming. California needs the rain and the atmospheric river that hit us this last weekend was just what we needed. A period of light, but steady rain.

+ I contemplated ditching cable and signing up for Sling or Hulu TV. In the end though, Internet access alone (+ taxes and equipment fees) and one of these two services wouldn’t have been much cheaper than the setup that we currently have, which is kinda disappointing, because I was hoping to save some money, as our cable package went up in price again. I just wished that cable companies valued their long term customers as much as they do new customers and would offer some deals for us as well.

+ I finally ran the Run to Feed the Hungry Turkey Trot here in Sacramento this year, the largest turkey trot in the nation. I am so glad I finally got around to it, because I had been talking about it for years.

How was your November?
