1. Beer. You don’t have to remind me that I am German, that I am from the land of beer!, and that you’re totally flabbergasted that I don’t drink any. It’s just disgusting to me. I remember having my one and only beer on my 16th birthday. It took me the whole night to finish it. People kept telling me that I should keep drinking it and I’d like it eventually, but I honestly don’t see the point in forcing something down my throat so that I will eventually like it. Maybe like it.
2. Brad Pitt. Seriously. Does anybody really think that he’s a good actor? Plu-hease. He’s only on the big screen because women are swooning over him, and even that I don’t get. I never understood why Jennifer Aniston had a fancy for him.
3. After-work parties. I really have never felt it necessary to go and hang out at a bar right after work. Isn’t that when you have actually worked 8+ hours and just want to go home and lie on the couch? Maybe cook some dinner? I guess, I am too much of a homebody to appreciate the invention of after work parties.
4. Money. I would completely, happily live without money if that was at all possible. Is it nice to have more money than you need? Yes. Will it make you happy? No. There are so many more important things in life than money. Unfortunately, everybody needs to have it and I just hate how it can turn some people into complete snobs.
5. Summer. While I do appreciate a nice dose of sunshine, I really love the winter, too. I love the candles, copious amounts of hot, steaming tea, rain storms and snow! I think the seasons were invented for a reason, so we can enjoy each of them for its very own idiosyncrasies.
6. Twilight. Oh, no, I know I am going to be bashed for this, but I just don’t get the hype. Don’t. get. it.
7. Hollywood. I lived next to Hollywood. Hollywood was my backyard for a while and while it seems cool and fancy-schmancy and “out of the world” to some people, it’s actually pretty ordinary. It’s just another neighborhood, really.
8. Work. Especially in this country. As important as it is to have a job, a) to earn and income and b) to have something meaningful/useful to do, a job shouldn’t DEFINE who you are. I don’t know about you, but as much as I love my job, I don’t live to work, but work to live.
9. College. Woah. Another bold statement, I am aware. But many of you would probably agree that most of the things that you learned in College are for the most part not essential to the job that you’re holding right now. It’s more a period of figuring out “living on your own”, taking responsibilities and navigating Campus life. Sure, my degree has helped me with my current career, but it hasn’t really taught me anything that I am actually doing on a daily basis. I learned those skills on the job.
10. Cinnabon Rolls. Don’t get me wrong, I am ALL FOR sweets. I have a sweet tooth myself, but Cinnabon rolls? Seriously. Just the smell alone makes me gag. I don’t know if I could ever eat one of those completely by myself. It’s just too much. Too much dough, too much cinnamon, too much sugar frosting. And with a whooping 730 calories, it’s about half of my daily calorie intake.
What are 10 things that YOU find overrated?

November 20, 2009 at 1:53 pmI agree with you on #1 and #6…never really liked beer, only those beer-mixes like Becks Lemon or Alster. And don’t understand the whole Twilight/New Moon/Vampire hype either…I didn’t even read the books.
But…I love Cinnamon Rolls and the Cinnabon ones are great…a little much for one person alone I agree, but still very delicious!

November 20, 2009 at 4:48 pmI agree with you on Brad Pitt and the whole Twilight thing. I do like beer. German beer. Oh yes. American beer, not so much.
Any Hollywood? The people who think Hollywood is all “the place to be” “Rodeo Drive” well, these people need to find some reality!

November 21, 2009 at 9:34 amI agree on a lot of stuff with you…Twilight, Hollywood, beer, afterwork parties – paah all unnecessary! But girl – look at Brad Pitt! Hey he’s a soooo good looking guy and yes, I like the way he’s acting ;)

November 21, 2009 at 10:27 amI was TOTALLY with you on every one of these …. UNTIL you got to #10!
The smell of Cinnabon rolls make me start doing math and trying to determine what meal I need to pass on so I can enjoy a yummy warm from the oven Cinnabon!

November 21, 2009 at 4:24 pmI do agree on all of them except #6. WHAT A SURPRISE!! Haha! I am not trying to convert you but Twilight is less “vampiry” than you think. It’s more about relationships. Kinda cheesy and girly and romantic. :)

November 22, 2009 at 1:30 amHi San,
you are so right on all your points. When people hear that I as a German don’t like any beer, they believe I am kidding them. I mix a light beer with Cola sometimes. I enjoy this version of a “Radler” in the summer. Can’t speak for #7 since I never been to Hollywood or CA for that matter. # 10: I just absolutely love cinnamon. But a Cinnabon Roll is just to much of a good thing. Icing is even worse.
Overrated for me:
Designer Handbags: Why would anyone pay that kind of money just to give some designer FREE advertisement…you know the bags with initials on them.
Starbucks: Coffee out of a PAPER CUP.. that does it for me right there.
HUMMER and right behind it the over sized Pick-up Trucks: The German in me flips out when I see Moms driving ONE child back and forth to school in one of these cars. Daily. What a waste of gas…
The massive advertisement for meds on TV: I noticed over the years living here how many of those medications which have been advertised intensively have to come off the market because of severe side effects.
Not overrated but overdone: Air conditioning. Why do I have to take a jacket in the middle of the summer when I go in a building.. any building, and still after a while my hands get blue. It’s 95F outside and inside the building the temp is 60F. That is nuts. Even more crazy is the fact that a lot of people in there offices have heater running under their desk while the air conditioner is running. No kidding here…I can’t remember that anywhere in Europe people have that much of a problem with sinus infections. If you have that cold air blasting in your face for a long time…Oh well.. The Pharma industry, advertising companies etc. they are happy.
But that’s why we love it here.. all is bigger and over the top..right?! :>))
PS: I sooo envy you for your German bakery that you mentioned a few posts ago.

November 22, 2009 at 6:51 pmI agree on quite a few points with you: Beer, Brad Pitt, Summer, Twilight, Hollywood, and especially Cinnabon Rolls. That smell in the mall (mixed with the disgusting pretzel smell) is awful!

November 23, 2009 at 6:06 amI love beer and Brad Pitt but agree that Twilight is TOTALLY overrated. I’m so over the Twilight/Vampire craze that any and all movies and TV shows even mentioning a vampire will undoubtedly get an eyeroll from me.
