The lovely Tabitha tagged me in a little handwriting project, and since I think in this blogger community, where every word is typed and text only gains personality through the actual content of someone’s blog post, it would be kind of nice to actually see people’s handwriting. I am a big fan of – pretty! – handwriting and therefore, I’d love to see yours :)
And of course, I’ll start and share mine!
Here are the rules:
Write down the following, snap a picture (or scan the document), post it, and tag others.
1. Name/Blog Name
2. Right handed, left handed or both
3. Favorite letters to write
4. Least favorite letters to write
5. Write: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
6. Write in caps:

Here is mine:
That’s right – I print. I pretty much have since 5th grade when the teachers finally started not caring about cursive that much anymore. I don’t even know anymore how to do cursive. The way I learned cursive in elementary school is pretty much outdated now anyway and the way kids learn cursive in school nowadays (in Germany) is just so ugly, in my opinion. The “t” bothers me especially, I can’t even tell you why exactly. It just looks wrong.
And then compare it with the American cursive handwriting which I actually find very pretty.
I think it’s interesting to see how everybody later on develops a very unique handwriting which has nothing – or very little – to do with how it was actually taught in school. Often, it’s a mix between cursive and print.
Is that true for yours?

June 30, 2010 at 3:29 amI love your handwriting! I really, really do. I wish I wrote that neat and pretty. Heh. It’s so American, though, the way you mix uppercase letters in with lowercase – or, well, somehow all letters are the same height…? :P That’s *very* American to me. Everyone at my American high school wrote like that (in one way or another) and I ended up writing the same way.
I used to have 3 or 4 different handwriting and I couldn’t decide which one to use so my notes from elementary school and high school are a mess; it looks like 4 different people worked on them. :/
I totally agree with you on cursive handwriting taught in German schools. And yes! The “t”! What’s up with that! It barely even looks like anything resembling a “t”! I think I wrote like that for about 24 hours and then abandoned it. ;)
My handwriting used to be all cursive, very elaborately so. Like, there were swooshes and whatnot that had no place in being there. Haha. Now it’s mostly print but you’re right: especially when I have to write very fast, it morphes into a mix between print and cursive.

I go back and forth between print and cursive, depending on my mood, I guess. I actually wrote out this exercise in both, and just used the one I thought was prettier. :-P
