15: Five Things Friday Vol. 2

Five Things Friday: just five things I’m thinking about or things that made my week, or things that I otherwise feel like sharing.

On Tuesday, I got to work and then at 8:30 am the whole network/Internet went out. It stayed out for almost the entire day (we were eventually sent home to telework). It makes you realize how much – no really, how freakin’ much! – we rely on the Internet to get anything done these days.

I am probably one of the few people that still pay for a cable subscription (don’t @ me) and, what do you know, the ‘promotional offer’ expired and they’re raising the price. Again. You’d think that they have deals for long term customers, but nope, only for new customers. Screw the loyal ones. I spent some time on the phone with a customer service rep, but I didn’t really get anywhere, and I think I am finally ready to look into other options. Does anyone have Sling or Hulu TV? How do you like it?

Want to hear about some more stellar customer service? I am a big fan of Perfect Bars*, but I had bought a couple of bars recently that were not up to par. I wasn’t sure if they had changed the recipe or something, so I reached out to the company to inquire. I had a very pleasant correspondence with Morgan, who assured me that they didn’t change anything about the bars and that consistent quality was their top priority. If I wasn’t 100% satisfied, I should send them the ‘batch number’ of the particular bars and they’d send me some coupons to make up for the unsatisfactory experience. I received five (!) coupons for free bars in the mail a few days later.

Moral of the story: you just have to speak up, guys! It doesn’t have to be a nasty complaint, just a “hey, I wanted to let you know about this experience so you can improve in the future” message. Kindness goes a long way (both ways!).

Just as I hit the 3-year-mark with my iPhone 7, which I am still very happy with, tbh, my battery is slowly starting to go. Like clockwork. Has anyone replaced their battery (as in, is it worth it?) or always opted for a new phone at this point?

We tried this 4-item Trader Joe’s dinner hack this week: Mushroom Alfredo Cauliflower Gnocchi. Well, Trader Joe’s was out of the Mushroom Medley Alfredo Sauce this time, so I tried it with the seasonal Autumnal Harvest Alfredo* instead.

TGIF!

I am doing NaBloPoMo this month. 30 blog posts in 30 days. Come join me. #nablopomo2019

  1. No internet at work is a bummer! That happened once at my work, and I immediately turned around and went home and worked from there (a 15 minute walk). How many days a week/ can you work from home? Or is that not really an option? I didn’t really like working from home, but whenever I needed to really do some “deep work” it was perfect.

    1. I definitely prefer working in the office, but I have the option to work from home party-time, full-time or “situational”…. I live close to my work, so I’d rather go in every day, but I like having the option to work from home.

  2. We used to have so many issues with the Internet at my work but, luckily, I can do a lot of things without Internet. But it’s not good for some of our other departments that are essentially useless without Internet!

You’ve been having great customer service this month! That’s amazing that that company sent you a bunch of coupons for free products. It helps to be kind!

    1. I can definitely do a lot of work without the Internet, but our server was down too and that I can’t do without… :)

  3. It’s crazy how much we rely on the internet. I am currently suffering from an tennis elbow and I just realized how much of everything I get done on a computer or phone these days. It’s scary but not really changeable. But still and important observation.

    1. Did you get your tennis elbow from working on a computer all the time?

  4. We have Hulu TV and really like it. I know a lot of people who like the Sling too. My parents still have cable too and are starting to look at their options because theirs was just changed too with no warning. And one of their favorite channels was suddenly gone. Not cool.

    1. Oh, I am so glad you guys like Hulu TV and you know people who have and love Sling. I am definitely going to check it out, they have free trials. I hate that the cable companies don’t give a sh*t about their long term customers and are raising fees and prices all the time without warning.

  5. I haven’t had cable since I moved in with Phil. He’s didn’t get cable when he bought his house and I didn’t care enough about having it. When I lived in my condo, the HOA provided cable so I didn’t pay extra for it, which was really nice. We have Amazon prime, netflix and Hulu. We get Hulu for free through Phil’s mom’s cell phone contract. We also share a netflix subscription with her. So between those 3 providers, we don’t miss cable. We have a small antennae that we use to get the local network stations. Sometimes they don’t come in great, but the stations we use the most (CBS and PBS) come in great.

    1. I could probably do without cable, although there are a few channels that I enjoy… Jon however loves his news stations and music channels. We’re trying to find a compromise ;)
