I am answering more random questions from my readers today, because it’s fun. (If you have more random questions, hit the link in the sidebar! —> )

From Stephany:
Have you considered getting a non-government job due to all the upheaval this year?

If I am perfectly honest; not really. I feel like I’ve made a decision to stick it out early on and I am still trying to do that, for various reasons.

This question honestly begs for its own blog post. There is so much to unpack here. I have done a lot of thinking over the last 10+ months (but haven’t really arrived at an answer other than to stay put for now, to be honest). There are a lot of things now that are really annoying (more so than before). I also feel that I’ve been “overlooked” for promotions and/or taken for granted (or both), which has been very frustrating.

But, I am also a creature of habit. I like my actual job. Am I happy with all aspects of it? No. But I also don’t know where else to go. I’ve been here my whole career and have some niche skills (although I also have tons of skills that could be applied elsewhere and I am not afraid to learn something new). However, I really don’t want to start over with health insurance, annual leave, sick leave, etc. I’ve worked so hard to get where I am right now and for the perks/benefits that I have as a federal employee.

What is your idea of a perfect day?

I am waffling between sleeping in and getting an early morning run in (I’d like to do both!). No, but I think I am going to go with an early morning run with a beautiful sunrise. It’s really a great start to any day. When I return, I’d like to reward myself with a big cup of coffee and a hot shower. Then Jon hopefully is up for going to brunch a little later.

There is no work (obviously, although I do enjoy my job) and, because we’re talking hypotheticals here, I would want to spend the rest of the day with family and or friends (most of them live to far away for it to be a realistic option most days), but quality time with people that I love is HIGH on my list for a perfect day. Maybe we’d go for a nice hike together, or we just hang out in the backyard and have a BBQ. I’d probably end the day with a good book.

Who is your favorite character of Friends?

Oh, very hard question. I am assuming you mean of the six main characters? I honestly like them all for the individual quirks, and they just jive so well together. They all make me laugh for different reasons. If I had to pick one, I would probably go with Rachel. I just love Jennifer Aniston (in general) and think she’s just so hilariously self-deprecating in Friends.

This question reminds me: I have to finish my “The Friends Apartments” LEGO Set :)

From Anthea:
How do you keep your fitness motivation levels constant all year round?

(I apologize, Anthea, for not answering this sooner. That was one of the stragglers I found in my spreadsheet that had fallen through the proverbial cracks. I hope you’re still interested in the answer.)

To be completely honest, my motivation level fluctuates, just like for everyone else, lest you get the idea that I have unlocked a secret that nobody else knows about. I know that if you look at my weekly workout recaps, it might look like I never fall off the bandwagon… but believe me when I say that I can easily tell when I was motivated and when I was just winging it.

I think the difference might be that I am generally a pretty disciplined person and discipline takes over when motivation soars and wanes. I just don’t give myself an exit route. I commit to do at least one thing every day (it can be as little as 10 minutes of meditation or as much as a weekend of PeloFondo, where I bike for hours!) and I find that often times it’s about getting started. Once I started doing something for 10 minutes, I often add more time later.

The challenges and trackers that I sign up for also help. I am a little type A, so I really strive for little rewards (like checking classes off a list) and I also like to be part of a team (like the Power Zone Challenges or Team Wilpers Run Challenges), where I know that I am “expected” to fulfill my workout schedule every week. I plan the workouts ahead and then just simply stick to my plan. I rarely make exceptions.

Who’s your favorite Friends character? Do you have a problem staying motivated?

I am doing NaBloPoMo this month. 30 blog posts in 30 days. Come join me. #nablopomo2025 Happy writing!

  1. I know that work hasn’t been fun lately, but I think you’re right to stay in your job for right now. The biggest reason is the invaluable one – YOU LIKE YOUR JOB. If things get worse or if you see a better alternative, you can always change your mind.

I’m getting very close to giving Friends another look. I didn’t like it very much back in the day, but people keep talking about it and I feel like I might be missing out.

  2. I actually don’t have a problem being motivated. Maybe because I too am a creature of habit, so once something is part of my routine, it’s part of my routine FOREVER.

  3. I like Birchie’s advice on your job – you like it! I think my favorite character was Chandler. His facial expressions were so funny. I don’t have a problem staying motivated. I stick with my workouts, because I think I fear that if I skip a day that I’ll not be able to get back into the swing of it. Plus, I like how I feel after I workout.

  4. Yeah, I’ve been in my current job for 10 years. It’s not perfect, but I like it enough that I don’t want to make a change- so I definitely get it.
To answer your second question- if I don’t exercise I feel like absolute crap, so no, i don’t have trouble staying motivated! Sometimes I’m not as motivated to do strength training (I’d rather just run every day) but fear keeps me going on that one- if I don’t do my strength work I probably won’t be able to keep running. Plus- a big goal keeps me going, and I seem to have one or two big races every year that I train for.

  5. Thank you for the feedback on motivation and working out – I needed to read this today as getting back into an exercise routine has been an effort lately!
I’ve always found your fitness posts inspiring – working out all year round no matter the weather – you are very disciplined!

  6. If you like your job, that’s a good reason to stay!
My favorite Friends character is Monica — she is so relatably neurotic!

  7. I enjoyed reading your answers, San. I don’t think I could pick a favorite Friends character, but it is one of my all time favorite shows.

  8. Motivation is my constant struggle. But you know what beats laziness in my world? Frugality. If I pay for a class/equipment/clothing, I will USE it. Right now the only thing getting me to do exercise is that I just bought a new yoga mat and I will be damned if I don’t use it.

  9. I think it’s an amazing thing to like the work you’re doing! I’m glad you can keep on doing it. I’ve been so motivated by Peloton! Who knew I’d be so delighted with awards and badges and all the encouragement they offer! I love every Friends character. I guess I’d say my favorite is Phoebe. I love it when she sings.

  10. I love reading those Questions and Answers. So fun. Humans are creatures of habits and especially when finally you get something out of it it’s so hard to change things up. Fingers crossed it alls starts to sooth out and you are able to go back and just enjoy your job.
Your perfect day sounds fun but I would choose the sleeping. In a perfect world I would be able to sleep through the night for 8 hours. Everything after that is the cherry on the top.

  11. Ooh yay, thank you for answering my questions! I think that makes so much sense about your job. It’s part of the reason I stay at my job, even though I could probably make more money somewhere else. But I like it, I have autonomy, and I have flexible time off! It’s hard to beat all of that.
I have such a hard time choosing my favorite Friends character! I’ve been a Chandler stan through and through, but in this rewatch, I’m finding myself more drawn to Phoebe. And then there’s realizing I am 100% a Monica, so she’s so relatable to me!

  12. Your comments about your job, and Birchie’s recent retirement, have me thinking about my own job and what I want. Ponder, ponder. No decisions are imminent, but I’m starting to consider the options. Staying makes the most sense when you love what you do, AND the love outweighs the, um, challenges. For me, I’m not sure if that’s the case anymore.
But enough about work! I love your perfect day, too, and I’m so glad that you’d see your family on that perfect day. I wish you could see them more on the regular days, too. <3
