11: Five Things I did today

1. I was so happy that today was a federal holiday and I had the day off. I slept in late and had a very lazy day. After a week of work travel and my race yesterday, I needed that. I was woken up by a noise and when I looked outside, it was pouring rain. I breathed a big sigh of relief thinking how lucky we were that yesterday was a chilly, but beautiful sunny fall day here in Northern California.

2. The rainy day was a great excuse to cozy up on the couch, drink coffee, and try to catch up on as many NaBloPoMo posts as possible because I got behind last week. I am still not fully caught up but I’ll be working on that throughout the week. Don’t post anything new until I am caught up, ok? (Just kidding – I know you guys will be cranking out more posts because you’re incredibly committed to NaBloPoMo and I love it!)

3. I ate a whole bag of Trader Joe’s Lentil & Rice Sour Cream and Onion rings and I have zero regrets. These are so good.

4. I used my Theragun on my tired legs and wondered once again why I always forget about this great recovery tool, which I underuse frequently. I guess the reason could be that – like foam rolling – it hurts a little bit to use it. The muscles are sore after all, but it hurts so good and only five minutes make such a big difference.

5. I searched for flights to go home for Christmas. Yes, I am aware I am late to the game and the flight prices are painful proof of that. Ugh. I am expecting that we’ll have to pay a pretty penny to be able to spend the holidays with my family, but what is more important than that? Nothing, that’s right.

What’s one thing you did today?

  1. This sounds like a much-needed rest day for you, San. It’s exciting that you will be going home for Christmas. I hope you can find some half-decent flights. This morning, we took Riley for a walk to the dog beach, and he had a bit of a paddle in the water.

  2. If it makes you feel any better: the flight prices have not changed much the last 8 weeks. I wanted to go but it’s absolutely insane this year for some reason. So looking earlier would not have changed it much.
I wrapped my kids gifts for the Advent calendar today and felt very productive.

  3. Yeah for a much needed Rest Day! I actually do use my muscle gun quite often. It just hurts so good! Put it in a place were you see it. That is a great reminder to use it, I feel.
So excited for your trip home for Christmas. Hope you´ll find a decent priced flight – fingers crossed.

  4. I’m so busy reading and writing blog posts I can’t even imagine traveling in the middle of it. I hope you will give yourself grace and rest up. And I hope you find tickets to go home too, soon!

  5. Oh I’m happy to hear you might be going home for Christmas! It’s been so long for you. I imagine Christmas in Germany to be magical, I have an image in my head of what it must be like.
The Theragun is such a great tool! You just reminded me I should do some foam rolling.

  6. I’m so excited you might be going home for Christmas. Ugh re. flight prices, though.
I’m also really glad you got a day off. You have been so busy with work, racing, moving, training. I bet it felt great to be able to just…SIT STILL!! You’re constantly moving and a rainy day is the perfect backdrop.

  7. I actually didn’t have Monday off work, but it was quiet most of the day, so I was able to do a few things, including ordering my holiday cards! The last few years, I’ve used a Groupon offer for Staples, which is pretty easy to do, then I picked them up next to where I was meeting my knitting friends. Done! The mailing them part waits for December, but I’m glad to have them on hand. Hmm, I should order some holiday stamps now.

  8. What a lovely day! Sleeping in, coffee, rain… it doesn’t get much better than that. I had to work yesterday (sigh) but I’m hoping to have a lazy day on Wednesday, my day off. And, you reminded me that I have a Bob and Brad massage gun, and I keep forgetting to use it! I should get it out.

  9. You’re day off sounds delightful. I didn’t have yesterday off because the teachers I sit for had to teach. I thought that schools used to be closed on Veteran’s Day. I wonder if it’s because they just had the day off for the election.

I’m so happy that you’re going home for Christmas. I think that sounds like a great priority.

I’m going to the local Founder’s Day dinner with alums from my college tonight, and that’s always a good time. I hope to accomplish getting caught up on laundry. I use a lot of towels to keep the chili crockpots warm at my tailgate, and they get chili spilled on them and I’m on my 3rd load of tailgate related laundry. The end is in sight.

  10. Gosh, I didn’t know Veteran’s Day was a day off in the US. Not here in Canada. You’d think it should be, but no. Sounds like the perfect day off just relaxing after a busy weekend. And flights these days are never cheap no matter what time of year.

  11. That is exciting that you will be home for Christmas. It’s worth the high prices of airfare to be there during the holidays IMO! We will be at my parents after Christmas this year as my sister is coming home with her family. We spent Christmas Eve and Day with Phil’s mom/extended family and usually don’t see my parents around Christmas but it works out to go there the weekend after Christmas. We always spend Thanksgiving with my family so that’s why we usually don’t see them at Christmas.

Your day off sounded really great! It’s nice to have an excuse to be extra cozy and stay in! One thing I did yesterday was treat myself to a salad since I was in the office. There is a place in our building that makes the best salads so it’s always a treat to get one for lunch.

  12. That rest was much needed as it seems. And yeah for going home at Christmas. I hope you can find a flight and give yourself that Christmas present.

I went for a walk today and enjoyed it. Also took a nap.

  13. Nice that you had the day off yesterday. Ted had the day off because he is a County employee, but Maya and I both had to work. I loved the rain, and opened the windows so I could smell it and hear it. It stopped before lunchtime, but I made tomato soup and grilled cheese for dinner anyway.

  14. You’ve been busy and it sounds lovely to have a calming catch-up sort of day. Today I had a long telephone chat with a close friend I’ve known since I was 12! We have lived 1300 miles apart for decades but our friendship is strong!

  15. Yes – the costly flights are not fun to deal with but being with family during the holidays is a beautiful thing. I’m glad you get to go home!
I’m trying to spend some FSA funds and I just might purchase a theragun for myself since those are covered!
One thing I did today: Volunteered at a food bank! It was a really lovely (but tiring!) day.

  16. Ug, I feel you on the flights! Ours is scheduled for just after Christmas but they were around $1200 dollars for a RT flight! I ended up using airline miles in the end, because that just seemed like a ridiculous price to pay. However, for you, definitely it is worth seeing your family. Although, I am trying to convince my family to have Christmas on the 10th or something so that I don’t always have to be flying home on the most expensive days!
