Awkward & Awesome

I used to regularly post this kind of post, but it’s been (almost three) years since I last used this format I thought it would be fun to revive it. See the archives here.

AWKWARD

+ Have you bought stuff off of Facebook Marketplace? Or NextDoor? What is it with people? Why do they not have the decency to respond or tell you that an item has sold after you’ve been sending messages back and forth and you’ve been trying to schedule a viewing? I do not get it. Common courtesy, anyone?

+ When people come to cycling class and leave midway through the class. Why? Why do you do that? There were people who couldn’t get a spot and you didn’t even stay for the whole class.

Okay, I understand that maybe there is a time where you have to be somewhere and maybe you gotta leave a few minutes early this one time, but 60% of people in my cycling class last week left before the end of the class. Some left after 30 minutes. I mean, come on.  It’s rude and it’s disrespectful, not just to the people who didn’t get a spot in class, but also to the instructor!

+ I’ve been getting the “Parents” magazine in the mail for the last two weeks. I am so confused why, because I do not have kids and I definitely didn’t order it, so I have no earthly clue why I would be getting this magazine, but it has my name and address on it. What’s happening??!

AWESOME

+ Even though I had an unpleasant experience dealing with people on FB Marketplace last weekend, we also did score a new-to-us coffee table for a reasonable price. I win.

+ I just found out that the book “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein, which was one of the top 5 books I read in 2017, was made into a  movie. I am usually a bit sceptical to watch the movie, if I loved a book a lot, but for some reason, I am intrigued to watch this one when it comes out on August, 9th! Have you read the book, and do you want to see the movie?

+ ICYMI, J walked the Davis M00-nlight Run 5k with me two weeks ago and I’m so proud of him.

+ Scored a $5 for 10$ Starbucks eGift Card via Groupon. I always take advantage of those offers. I don’t go to Starbucks very often, but this way I also make sure I never pay “full” price when I go.

+ When co-workers, friends, and gym buddies bring you the bounty of their vegetable gardens and you don’t have to buy produce from the store. So far, we have been given zucchini, cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs. We’ve also been able to eat everything up and that feels awesome. (Zucchini Scones anyone?)

Tell me something awkward or awesome!

  1. Can you make me some Zucchini Scones? I’ll provide you with the Zucchini’s (thanks to my neighbors), I just don’t want to put the work in…. and, I’m sure yours are 1000% better than what ever I make :) #hug #thankyou

  2. What time is the spin class where people leave? When I used to belong to a gym that had spin, I would go to the early morning class (5:45AM) but always left early because I had to start getting ready for work by 6:30. Those classes were never full, though. But I was one of those annoying spin people! Eeks.

I’ve never bought anything off FB Marketplace but I have sold things on there and I always try to be super responsive and mark something as sold the minute the transaction happens.

Hmm… awkward and awesome. Awkward was having to tell someone I went on a few dates with that it’s not working out (oof) and awesome was a really nice dinner with friends on Tuesday. :)

  3. I absolutely loved this post so much! Also what is up with the marketplace?? I have tried to sell a few things and the decency is definitely lacking there. Like, if you want me to hold something for you and then you don’t get back to me. RUDE! I’m glad you were able to score something cool though to make up for other not so great experiences!

And yay for coworkers with gardens! I’m actually attempting tomatoes this year so we’ll see what comes of it. So far so good and my little stalk has 6 ‘maters!

Ugh that sucks for the instructors of the spin class and the people who would genuinely want to there for the full duration! But also the people in class bc I imagine that seeing people leave is distracting and also demotivating!

  4. PS: yes!!! I am so excited for that movie!!! And Milo 🥰

  5. I really want to see The Art of Racing in the Rain. I loved that book even though I am not a dog person. On my first date with Phil, he told me that he had to stop reading it on his bus commute because he was starting to tear up. We saw the trailer for the movie on tv recently and he said he is pretty sure he can not watch the movie as he will cry. he’s not a crier so I think it’s very sweet that that book moved him so much!

I’m with you on the annoyance of facebook marketplace. I’m selling some things right now and have had a good experience but have had a lot of flakey experiences in the past!

My awkward thing for the week was when we were at Phil’s family reunion last week. The couple hosting it lives way up on a hill and at the bottom the hill there is a lake. It’s hard to tell whose yard is whose since the lake is so far from the houses. So when we got to the party, I needed to change Paul’s diaper as he had pooped. I wanted to do it far away from people so I walked over to an area where no one was. There were a couple of people at a picnic table close – I figured they were part of the family (he has a large extended family and I don’t know a lot of them). Well, it turns out those people were neighbors and NOT part of the family and I was changing Paul’s diaper on their lawn. oops. We figured this out because my MIL asked them “so how do you belong in this family” while I was changing Paul’s diaper and they were like ‘Um, we aren’t part of the party, we are the neighbors.’ I was like – oops! It was not a big deal but I felt a little bit embarrassed!

  6. I always grab those SB Groupons too, never want to pay full price! I just finished The Art of Racing in the Rain this week, and so excited for the movie! Even more so when I saw that Milo Ventimiglia is in it, I’ve been a fan of his from his Gilmore Girls days. I actually purchased my couch from FB Marketplace, and I totally understand your frustration because oftentimes I’d schedule a viewing or ask a question about the size and they didn’t answer, and then it would be marked as sold- it drove me batty! Glad to hear you scored a new coffee table though!

  7. I haven’t read the book but heard you talk about a couple times. Maybe I want him the movie if I don’t get to reading it first.

As for marketplaces I thinks it’s not limited to that one. I’ve had the same experience here in Germany and it’s really annoying. Tried to sell a plasma tv – actually sold it 16 times before someone finally picked it up. And the rudeness of some people…

I would love to get some zucchini or tomatoes. Still haven’t done those scones.
