On my birthday

March 13, 2017 filed under: about me, birthday

Last Friday was my birthday. It conveniently fell on a Friday, so I had a whole weekend of birthday shenanigans ahead of me. Well, to be quite honest, it was mostly a laid-back weekend without too many obligations. More than fine by me.

My birthday started out with a 4.1 mile – run. My sister called me crazy, but I am telling you, if you wake up on your birthday and you’re feeling good and don’t have any aches and pains, count yourself lucky and head out for some exercise. Especially when it’s looking like it’s going to be a nice spring day!

I took a shower and then brewed some fresh Chemex coffee, cut my birthday marble cake (my favorite) and then FaceTimed with my (twin) sister and family.

As always, it’s hard not to be able to see my sister, family and friends on my birthday, but we tried to make the best of it.

I talked to a few more people by phone, my friend Susi sent me some beautiful flowers and I opened some birthday cards and packages.

I relaxed in the afternoon, read my book, and then Jon and I got ready to head out for dinner. J had reserved a table at the Pilothouse on the ‘Delta King’, an old steamboat that is a hotel + restaurant and anchored in Oldtown Sacramento.

We’ve walked by it so many times, but never had dinner there and I love that J suggested it for my birthday dinner.

We had cocktails first and enjoyed the sunset and view of the river. We then ordered the Spanish mushrooms in white wine and garlic as an appetizer. They were delicious!

As an entree, I chose the cider-brined pork chop with maple-bacon chutney, caramelized onions, mashed potatoes, and broccoli. It was a huge portion, and I had to eat all of it because it was just SO GOOD. J got the New York steak which was also delicious! For dessert, I was served a piece of Orange Grand Marnier cheesecake on the house.

I felt totally sick afterward, but it was totally worth it. Ha! It was a beautiful, mild evening and one of the first days that really felt like spring. We stopped at a coffee shop afterwards, because I thought I might benefit from a espresso coffee as a digestif, and to enjoy the beautiful night a little longer.

It was a wonderful, laid-back day! And thanks to all of you who sent messages or even gifts,  and who thought of me on my birthday. You made it extra special. xo

Happy belated birthday! For some reason I thought you were a St. Patrick’s Day baby so I thought your birthday was NEXT friday! It looks like you had a fabulous day. And how wonderful that it fell on a day you have off! Starting your day with a run sounds perfect to me, especially since it was so nice outside! I rarely run on my birthday because the weather is usually pretty awful. Your birthday celebration sounds perfect and looks delicious!! Yum! Low key celebrations are my jam these days. We stayed in and ordered take-out on my birthday as it fell on a Monday and I didn’t feel like going to the trouble of eating out on a week day, plus we left on a vacation later that week so had plenty of opportunities to eat out then.

Here’s to another wonderful year full of adventures!!

Happy belated birthday! Looks like it was a great one, even though I imagine it’s difficult to be so far away from friends & family (& your twin!) when this day rolls around.

Thank you :) It’s never easy to be so far away, but we make the best of it.

So funny – my twin cousins are also March 10th babies! Maybe March 10 is a twin day! ;)

Your birthday sounds so, so lovely. I think it’s everything I would do (just sub out the run for a spin class, haha). Your dinner looked so delicious, too!

    Happy belated birthday, San!
