Good times

September 30, 2004 filed under: this and that

Hey guys… it’s me again.

I am tired after a really short night (J has been in a very talkative mood the last few days and keeps me up, but hey, I like it when he shares his thoughts – so I won’t complain).

It’s getting a little cooler here finally… but still around 85°F, so it’s not really fall yet, but I like that weather a lot! I tried to send some sunshine to Germany last week but my friend told me it didn’t really get there. Oh well. It’s a long way from here to Germany ;)

Have you heard about the Parkfield-earthquake on Tuesday. Man, that’s so exciting! I couldn’t believe it was happening, because an earthquake in that area was long overdue (according to the very little research knowledge that scientists have so far about “predicting” earthquakes). Oh well. I was thrilled! I am following the scientific news every day and it’s so interesting for my field of interest (did I mention that I wrote my master thesis about the San Andreas Fault?)

Anyways, everything else is going great. We had a really fun weekend… went to Davis for the “Causeway Classic” Football game on Saturday (UC Davis vs. Sacramento State) and ended up watching the game from the upper deck of the parking garage, because tickets were sold out which hasn’t happened before… last year the game was in Sac and we got tickets at the ticket box that day. Anyways, it was a fun game (Davis won 58:23 ) and later on we had a BBQ at our place with Claudia and Stoyan, Peter and Silke. It was fun!! Alicia and Andi couldn’t come, because Alicia had a really bad migraine attack and couldn’t leave the house. They still haven’t been to our new apartment and we’ve been living there for over 2,5 weeks now!

This weekend we’re going to Ventura with Susi and Peter. Susi’s going to leave for Germany in October, so we’re taking one last trip together so to speak. It’s going to be fun! We’re planning to hang out in Santa Barbara on Saturday.

I’ll keep you posted! Hope everything is well with you :)

Rain

September 20, 2004 filed under: this and that

Hi there… back after the first weekend at our new place.

I must admit… I am feeling better. I really like it here and I am not melancholy anymore ( I always am… I hate changes… but then again, changes are good, am I right?)

Guess what? I bought my first scrapbook album and supplies!! I am soooo happy… now I can start. I wanted to scrapbook for soooo long! If anyone has any tips on how to start, let me know (although i am sure I’ll figure it out. I am a creative person).

What else? Oh yeah, we had our first thunderstorm yesterday… and the first rain in months! It was so exciting. It started off with a little drizzle in the morning, and then it was bucketing down. OMG. We originally had planned to go to IKEA yesterday, but we decided not to… which was a very wise decision as we found out that the Sacramento downtown area was under water and the highway was flooded, too. It was amazing to see it on TV. I couldn’t believe it. That is the start of fall, I believe.

It’s been only about 65°F today… and I am wearing a sweater. That’s Northern California for you. It’s going to be pretty wet here the next few months. But hey, I won’t complain. We had a great summer.

Our new home

September 17, 2004 filed under: this and that

Boring Friday…

Oh well… I should be working, but there is absolutely NOTHING to do here (except working on my tutorial – which I have for a while) and now I have to distract myself a little bit ;)

We’ve moved last weekend!! Yay! I really thought we didn’t have that much stuff to move (since we only had a bed, a desk and the mattresses as “big” things), but we ended up with quite a few boxes, so it was pretty nice that I could borrow someone’s truck for the weekend.

It feels kind of weird to live in Sacramento now and I’ve been a little melancholy the last few days, because I miss Davis. It’s such a nice little place. Of course, living in Sacramento now has many advantages… no commute in the morning (which saves me about an hour each day!) and a cheaper and MUCH nicer apartment. Still, I am kind of sad that we left Davis… now that we had quite a few friends and nice neighbors.

Anyways, it’s only about 20-25 min. from here and we can go there as much as we want :)

We did quite a bit of shopping for the new place which was fun! It really looks really “homey” now. I like it a lot. It’s a really quiet neighborhood and we already made new “friends”… a very pretty cat has been visiting us for the past few days and J would like to keep it. I think it belongs to someone in the neighborhood and just comes and visits. We’ll find out about that. It seems as if she likes us though, because she always falls asleep under our bed and we have to “kick” her out, before we got to bed.

The other night we left the door open for a while and then found a praying mantis sitting on our bed *creepy* They are really big. I think I have never seen one before (I mean, for real) and they make funny moves when you point a flashlight at them. We were able to catch it with a glass bowl and put it outside. I hope it won’t come back!

Hope you have a great weekend!!

Finally good news.

September 10, 2004 filed under: this and that

Oh oh, shame on me… I am really sorry for not writing sooner. So much has been happening these past fours weeks! Unbelievable.

The good news: I got my SSN, my paycheck and my extended DS-2019. Everything is taken care of and I am going to stay here until July 2005. Everything worked out in the end… I am just wondering WHY it always takes until the last minute? That seems to be a pattern in our relationship. Things always (!) worked out about two weeks before I had planned to go home. Oh well, as long as it works out at all.. I won’t complain.

Things have been pretty busy. I had a lot of work to do, we had to look for a new apartment and we are moving in two days!! We found a wonderful 2-bedroom-apartment in Sac, close to work and for so much less than our current apartment-sh**hole. It’s unbelievable what they can charge for apartments in Davis!

J finished his BA in History and PoliSci today. He’s going crazy… 15 years of school are over for him! Unbelievable. I do understand what a weird feeling that must be. I kinda felt the same thing when I finished my final exam last year.

Ok, everything else is going fine here. I’ll keep u posted. I promise :)
