2: Thinking Out Loud #10

November 2, 2017 filed under: NaBloPoMo, Thinking out loud

Another Thursday, time again to link up with Amanda from Running with Spoons for Thinking out Loud and let you all know what’s been going around in my head.

+ Two weeks ago, when we drove to Apple Hill, we almost-witnessed (as in, saw that something happened, but didn’t see it happening) a horrible accident on the freeway. We saw a line of cars and onlookers on the opposite site of the freeway staring down an embankment and it got me all worried about what was down there.
On our way back, the site was cleared but we saw a tow truck load a burned-out Toyota onto their truck. I was horrified and said to J “Damn, that doesn’t look good. I hope the person driving this car survived”. On Friday, I learned that the driver of the car was the 25-year old son of a professor here on our campus and it gave me chills. Sadly, he did not survive. What a tragedy. I can’t stop thinking about it.

+ I am stoked, because I won another giveaway on Instagram last week. I’ve been rather luckily lately. I enter maybe a handful of giveaways each week (so, not a ton!), but have been luckily to win a few really cool running items. This giveaway was for a pair of Brooks Launch 4 via Trisha’s IG account and this is really great timing as I was in the market for some new running shoes! I have run in (two) different Brooks shoes before and love the brand, so I am stoked to be trying the Launch 4s.

+ WordPress has been the weirdest lately. A few months ago, it stopped sending me “comment notifications” (or if it did, just the random one here and there) and I can’t figure out why. There is also one person (who has repeatedly commented and has been approved repeatedly)  whose comments keep ending up in my “pending approval” folder. I am not sure how to fix this. Does anyone else have that problem?

+ The fall weather around here is gorgeous right now. I know that rain is coming, but right now, I am just enjoying the heck out of cooler temperatures and sunshine!

+ Halloween was fun. We made a yummy vegetarian burrito bowl for dinner (I’ll share the recipe in a later post, it was so good!) and watched the World Series (game 6) on Tuesday night. We also had some trick-or-treaters and J loved giving out the candy. We then finished up the evening with “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare before Christmas”.
If I get around to watching that movie and “Hocus Pocus” each year, my Halloween mission is accomplished. (It’s basically as much scary as I can handle, is what I am saying.)

+ Well, that was anticlimactic, wasn’t it? The Houston Astros beat the LA Dodgers in the World Series last night. They deserved it, too, but after this very exciting series going to game 7, last night’s game was kinda meh. I really should be okay with either team winning, especially when the Red Sox didn’t make it to the World Series. I honestly haven’t seen two teams as equally matched as these two in a while, but my alliances lie with the Dodgers, the Californian team, and oh well, they didn’t make it. So, congrats, Astros. You played a great game!

Thinking Out Loud #9

October 19, 2017 filed under: Thinking out loud

Another Thursday, another opportunity to Think Out Loud. It’s my go-to excuse of a real post these days, but then again, these posts are kind of fun and keep you in the loop and I actually enjoy them on other people’s blogs, so I assume, you do, too?!

+ Yep, I still had no time to write up the National Park recaps yet. Maybe I’ll save them for November, when I’ll be participating again (!) in National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo), where I will (attempt to) blog every day of the month.

+ I had a nice, low-key birthday celebration with J last night. We had pizza (per his request) and after dinner, he unwrapped presents. Thanks so much for all the birthday wishes you left for him via Instagram yesterday. I passed them on and he was touched by all the sweet messages so many of you wrote for him!

+  I don’t know why but I feel stressed right now. I go through phases where, realistically, nothing out of the ordinary is happening that should stress me out, but my perception is way off. I feel like I don’t have time for anything and I feel rushed all the time (even if nothing and nobody is rushing me). Do you know that feeling? No? Well, then you’re luckily, but chances are, you do know that feeling, too. I usually try to slow down my day (if possible), allow myself little treats (like a third cup of coffee or tea in the afternoon) and do something soothing in the evening (like knitting and listening to classical music) to get my perception back on track. What’s your remedy?

+  Oh, I just realized: Christmas is only 9 weeks away. Could that have anything to do with it?

+ I unraveled my latest knitting project and started over. Yeah, that happens sometimes and I usually hate doing that (because of all the time I had already put in), but also don’t want to keep knitting something that doesn’t turn out the way I want it to.  I loved the star-part of the pattern (and will probably try and use it in a different project) , but my Mom finished a project with this pattern and said that the size and shape of the finished shawl wasn’t ideal, so I decided to abandon this while I still could. Priorities, am I right?

+ My niece is going to turn 9 years old this Saturday and I can’t wrap my head around how fast she’s growing up. I have the fondest memories of her as a two-year old and that didn’t seem so long ago, whaaa!

+ I polled on Twitter, but I am going to ask here, too: how much data do you average monthly on your cell phone (I am talking the data that goes through your cell phone carrier, not WiFi, which of course everyone should use when they can!). I am just asking because I feel like data usage has been going up and up and up every time I got a new phone (which is every 2-3 years) and even just in general  in the last few months and I am trying to figure out if this is normal. I know that social media apps, like Facebook and Instagram, use a lot of data, especially when you also use the video features (like IG stories). I don’t stream other videos or music though and still feel that I am using a lot of data every month, so I was wondering if you have the same problem?!

I am just coming off a three day weekend and have not managed to blog. So there is that. At least, I can try and throw a little update together. You’d like that, right?.

+ I had planned to publish the first road trip recap post this week, but I think this will have to wait until next week (hoping that I’ll get around to writing this weekend). Do you ever have all these grand plans for writing and then nothing happens? Yeah, me too.

Instead, I cleaned our house and grocery-shopped and did laundry and all the things that you have to do after your normal routine has been thrown off by traveling (but it was so worth it, no complaining here!)

+ Sadly, we had to say farewell to baseball season last weekend (the Red Sox didn’t make it through the playoffs and as of yesterday, John Farrell is gone, which makes me sad. He was a good manager and I liked him as a person.).

+ I received news yesterday that my bff’s cancer is back and I just about had it with the cancer news from friends. My bff has been dealing with this brain tumor for the last 9 years and it’s just so incredibly unfair. I am a bit scared and frankly a little pissed off, but also can’t help to be incredibly positive and hopeful that she’ll beat this sucker once again. What else could I even think right now?

+ My heart is breaking in a million little pieces lately with all the natural disasters wreaking havoc on all different parts of the country. Right now it’s ‘our turn’ here in California with catastrophic wildfires in Napa and Sonoma counties and the foothills. So many homes have burned down, so many people have been evacuated, some have lost their lives. It was super-smokey yesterday morning when I drove to work. I just don’t know what do with all the bad news right now. I feel really unsettled lately.

+ On a positive note, I had a couple more orders from my Etsy shop and I guess, I should be gearing up a little bit for the holiday season. It’s been fun to make cards again.

Hey, I am back from my first leg of the road trip that I am doing with my cousin and his girlfriend and wanted to pop in real quick to say hello and give you a quick update. What did I miss?

+ The last six days were amazing. I can’t describe how thankful I am that I got to spend these days exploring national parks again. It was a whirlwind first part of our trip and I will take some time and process the experience before I blog about it, but rest assured, there are going to be some recaps in the near future. Again, you can follow along on Instagram in the meantime.

{Angel’s Landing – Zion NP}

+ Vacation time in the US sucks. There, I said it (again). I get 10 paid vacation days per year (and yes, I am lucky that I also get most federal holidays off.)  In Germany though, the minimum required vacation time is 20 days (and most people I know get more than that). It just makes traveling (and visiting home) so hard, if you only have 10 days per year.

+ Arizona Iced Tea is delicious. New favorite road trip drink.

+ I saw not one, but TWO tarantulas in the wild last weekend. I had just told my cousin’s girlfriend that yes, we do have unusual (for Germans) wildlife around here in the Southwest, but I had never seen a tarantula – or snake for that matter – with my own eyes. Well, and then we came upon the tarantulas. One is apparently quite lucky to see one, as they are nocturnal and are usually not out and about during the day, so I guess, we can call ourselves extra-lucky! Ha! We also saw mule deer, rock squirrels, chipmunks, and bighorn sheep and of course ravens and falcons. We also heard (but didn’t see) the owls at Zion.

+ Speaking of luck, I also won not one, but TWO giveaways on Instagram and blogs this week. I am so stoked. One giveaway was for Momentum Jewelry (which I am slightly obsessed with!) via Carlee’s blog and the other one was for a pair of bluetooth sports headphones from Jaybird (which is just awesome because I wanted to try wireless headphones for a while, but didn’t want to shell out the money!) via Susie’s Instagram feed. I guess, just entering all these awesome giveaways pays off sometime!!

+ I was horrified to hear about yet another hurricane pummeling the Carrebean and also the earthquake in Mexico City. Mother Earth is quite angry right now, isn’t she? One feels so helpless in the face of so much destruction and suffering. I guess, I should set up a recurring donation to the Red Cross.

It’s another Thursday and I am linking up with Amanda from Running with Spoons for Thinking Out Loud for some random thoughts again!

+ Last Saturday was my Californi-aversary. It’s been 16 years since I came to California for an exchange semester and then practically never left (I mean, besides flying back and forth for some visa adjustments for a few years, ha).  Blame it all on this guy. It’s crazy to me how fast these years flew by, they almost feel like a blink of my eye and here we are 16 years later.

{source}

+ Last year around this time, I flew to Vegas to meet up with one of my oldest friends, Cathy from Australia. When I mentioned it to J, he couldn’t believe that it has already been a year. Once again, where does the time go?

+ Yay, I got my Stumptown Coffee this week. Is anyone else as excited about coffee deliveries?

+ I’ve been pretty worried about all my friends in Florida the last few days, but everybody seems to be okay (which is a huge relief). The wind and flood damage in parts of the state seems to be significant, especially in the Florida Keys, but I am hoping that people will come together to support the relief efforts. I’ve already donated – again – to the Red Cross.

+ I’m off work today (for the next five days) to explore some National Parks with my cousin + his girlfriend and I am beyond thrilled. It’s going to be so much fun. I could really use the time off too. So, it’s probably also a little quiet over here for a little while, because I didn’t plan ahead and didn’t schedule any posts.  Follow me on Instagram in the meantime. See you next week!

Thinking Out Loud #5

September 7, 2017 filed under: Thinking out loud, this and that

+ I had planned to write a Labor Day Weekend recap, but honestly, there wasn’t much to recap (because we didn’t do anything exciting, besides enjoying a very laid-back weekend), so the few little highlights I will mention here.

+ It was super-smoky/hazy in Sacramento last weekend, mostly due to the wildfires around the state, and on top of that we were still in the middle of a heat wave. Except for running the usual errands on Saturday and my long run Sunday morning, I tried to stay indoors and stay cool.

+ I did stop by the Fleet Feet Labor Day Sale on Saturday though hoping for a steal on some new marked down running shoes, but no such luck. I stocked up on some Nuun and Honeystinger Waffles instead and got some 50% arm warmers for the fall (whenever fall decides to show up around here).

+ On Sunday, I found a baby squirrel on my long run. I didn’t want to put a picture here (the newborns look pretty fragile), but if you want to know what they look like… don’t you agree that they almost look like little puppies? Its eyes were closed and it didn’t have much fur to speak of yet, it could have only been a few days old, but it was breathing and trying to move around. No Mama-Squirrel was nearby. I knew that I couldn’t just leave it there to die (I think I have watched one too many episodes of Bandit Patrol), but I also didn’t have anything with me to pick it up and I was pretty much halfway out from my run, so I decided to finish my run and then come back with the car and a cardboard box to rescue the baby squirrel. I knew I was taking a  chance of it dying in the meantime, but what could I have done? Sadly, when I returned about 35 minutes later, it had indeed died and I am so heartbroken. I wish there was something I could have done, but I don’t think it would have made it either way.

When I told my Mom, she laughed and reminded me that as a kid, I had always picked up animals and birds in the woods behind our neighborhood and took them to our vet next door. No surprise that I wanted to become a vet for a long time. Have you ever rescued a wild animal? Did it survive?

+ I haven’t been very creative lately, but in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, I designed some #texasstrong cards for my Etsy shop. My friend Dina, the other half of our shop, lives in Houston and while she was lucky that she didn’t have to evacuate, my heart breaks for her city. All proceeds will go towards Texas flood relief efforts.

+ I had a pretty rough night on Monday. Do you ever lie awake and think about all the things happening in the world? The what-ifs in your life? I think about events that (apparently) I still haven’t completely let go off. I think about things that I wish were different. Man, I hate when I do that. I mean, why? It made me feel awful and I tossed and turned the rest of the night. Let’s just say that the next morning I didn’t feel exactly rested and I had an early morning workout on my schedule. At least, running my heart out made me feel normal again.

Thinking Out Loud #4

August 31, 2017 filed under: my so-called life, Thinking out loud

It’s another Thursday and I am linking up with Amanda from Running with Spoons for Thinking Out Loud for some random thoughts!

+ If you’ve been watching the news and are devastated by all the images from flooded Texas and you don’t understand why a city like Houston wasn’t prepared for a storm like Harvey, this article explains pretty well why. The 500-year-flood explained: why Houston was so underprepared for Hurricane Harvey.

+ If you are a runner and would like to #runfortexas (or walk!) with me this weekend, this is a good opportunity to get some miles in AND help out in a big way. This virtual run/fundraiser was initiated by some awesome runner friends on Instagram and I am just spreading the word. I am sure most of us know somebody affected by Hurricane Harvey and would love to help. I am doing the 10k, but there is also a 5k option. They’ve already raised over $15,000. That’s amazing! I love the runner community!

+  I’m itching to work on my blog layout a bit again. You know that feeling. I usually don’t change a whole lot, but I want to play around a little bit. It’s just a matter of finding making time for that.

+  I purchased a new knitting pattern… with ‘stars’! If you know me, then you know that I love stars-everything! :) I have jeans with stars, and a necklace with little stars, and a star-stud in my ear.  I’m so excited for fall when I definitely will pick up my knitting again and make that shawl (pssst, I already started. Couldn’t wait.)!

+ Ugh, I’ve been so hungry this week. I could eat EVERYTHING. Do you have phases like that? Where you just had lunch and you are hungry for another full meal? What is happening??

+ Just an FYI, if you’re a Stumptown Coffee lover, you should take advantage of their current promotion ‘Grab two bags of beans // Get a free coffee jar‘, and if you order on Monday, all the proceeds are going to the Harvey Relief fund! Win-win!

More random thoughts, yay. Aren’t you excited? I am linking up with Amanda from Running with Spoons for Thinking out Loud again.

+ My Mom’s surgery last Friday went well. Thanks so much for sending well wishes and good vibes. I was able to talk with her on Saturday (and every day since then) and she sounded really good on the phone. It was a huge relief to me. We also found out that the growth in her adrenal gland was benign (this is GREAT THE BESTEST NEWS EVER. Especially since the doctor’s didn’t really present his outcome as much of a possibility. I can’t tell you how heavy the weight was that was lifted off my shoulders.

She was released today (in under a week, which is fast for German standards after such a big surgery! They had to make an 8-inch incision on the left backside of her  torso) and she will most likely go to a rehabilitation facility again for three weeks (also standard in Germany) to gain back core strength and flexibility. You guys, I am so, so relieved. Being so far away is hard.

+ Staying on the topic of surgery, I found out that my sister will also have to have surgery.  It’s less invasive (thank goodness!) as it will be an arthroscopic procedure on her shoulder, but it’s tomorrow. Can we just stop with the surgeries, please?
She was recently complaining to me how in the world it can be that she had several surgeries already (on her knee, her wrist, her foot… now her shoulder) and other things (hernia, kidney stones) and I have had NOTHING (oh, besides a broken leg when I was two and iron deficiency anemia about a decade ago). I can’t really say anything, because it’s true… I’ve been mostly spared from health issues so far. Not that I am wishing anything on my sister, but I am very thankful that so far I haven’t had to deal with any major injuries or health problems in my life.

+ My own scraped-up elbow is healing nicely. It’s been a week and a half since my fall and I’ve used ointment and band-aids (big ones!) to keep the area covered. It’s pretty much healed except for a tiny spot (which seemed to be the one that was scraped the hardest). Yay. Now I just hope that it won’t leave scar.

+ I am starting week two of my Runtastic Results strength training plan and I can only say three words: 1) ‘ouch’ (I am sore!), 2) “yay” (it’s more fun than I thought it would be!), and 3) ‘awesome’ (I can already feel getting stronger!).

+ Four books became available at my (digital) library at the same time. Does that ever happen to you? I happens to me all the time. Sigh. Nothing for days, and then four book all at once. I hope I can finish them in the next 21 days.

+ I made German apple pancakes last weekend and they were so good. They’re a little different from American pancakes (as you can see) because they don’t use leavening. Just flour, milk and eggs. I added a bit of protein powder, which made them a great post-run meal!  I love apples (all year around, as I told you in my recipe post on Monday), but I really can’t wait for apple season this fall!

Thinking Out Loud

August 10, 2017 filed under: Thinking out loud

Oops, I disappeared there for a second … ahm… about a week. Not sure what happened, but I am taking the opportunity again to link up with Amanda from Running with Spoons for Thinking out Loud to get my blogging schedule back on track.

+ If you can spare any good vibes and positive thoughts tomorrow for my Mom’s second kidney surgery (the last one was a year ago), it would be very, very much appreciated. I am a little anxious over here (as always when things happen to my loved ones on the other side of the world) and just hope that everything goes well.

+ I am happy to report that I solved my hair dilemma that I mentioned last time. I bought some hair color at Target the other week and dyed my hair back to my regular color (which is like a dark chocolate brown) and it worked out quite nice. No more red hair for me (and probably no trim for a while either).

+   I’ve mentioned on Twitter that I am currently dealing with a major pet peeve at the gym. There are these three women (that I’ve seen doing this), who come into the locker room after their workouts and spread out their toiletries in front of the (limited) mirror spots BEFORE they get in the shower and get dressed and as a result, block the mirrors for everybody else who is (already showered and dressed) trying to get ready to go to work in the morning. It drives me batshit crazy.

I watched this for a few weeks (and didn’t say anything because I was always able to get in front of a mirror when I needed to and ‘why should I be the person who picks a fight?’), but last week I felt the obligation to call one of them out. Someone had moved that one lady’s stuff over to the side, so that she could use the mirror (while the lady was still getting dressed) and she came over and was all snippy about it. So, I stepped in and told her that she can’t put her stuff down and block the mirror if she’s not yet ready to use it. She said that she was in the shower and I said ‘Yeah, and we’re already dressed, trying to dry our hair and put our makeup on so we can go to work!”. The other girl was backing me up and I felt really good about speaking up … cautiously hoping that she (and the other two offenders, who kinda witnessed the situation) had learned their lesson. But then the next day, they reverted back to doing the same thing. What is wrong with people? It’s so inconsiderate and rude. Or, do you think that I am overreacting? What would you have done?

+ If you follow me on Instagram, you know already that I had my first fall ever last weekend during my long run. I tripped over my own feet (or a bump on the sidewalk, who knows?) and  landed flat on my face on the pavement. It was bound to happen, right? I mean, every runner falls at some point (please tell me that is true!). I wouldn’t particularly recommend it though. I was pretty lucky to walk away with just a scraped elbow. A badly scraped elbow, that is, but honestly, it could have been a lot worse. I even finished my 12 mile-run.

+ I think I need to bake something this weekend. I mean, something sweet. A pound cake or muffins or something. I don’t crave that stuff very often, but when I do? Man, do I want it RIGHT NOW. Maybe I’ll do some chocolate chip oat cookies. I think I saw a promising recipe somewhere recently. Gotta check my Pocket.

Thinking out loud

June 29, 2017 filed under: linkup, Thinking out loud

It’s my first time, but I am participating in the Thinking Out Loud linkup today, because I’m itching to write, but haven’t had time to work on a full blog post.

I don’t know how you usually run your blog or if you draft blog posts in advance or how that all works for your posting schedule, but I mainly aim for three posts a week and I constantly have a ‘draft document’ going where I jot down all my blog ideas, write and re-write my thoughts, and keep links that I want to share at a later point.

It so happens that I’ve been unprepared for the last couple of days, none of my drafts are ready to publish, but I want to post something and I do have some random thoughts I might want to share with you. So, Thinking Out Loud Thursday seems to be a good opportunity, yes?

+ I’ve been watching the news during my workouts on the mornings when I go to the gym. It’s a sick little habit, because these days, 99% of the time, the news aggravate me, but then I am on the treadmill blowing off steam at the same time, you see. It’s like the only way I can consume news right now, if I want to stay informed (which I do!).

+ Staying on the topic of news, the way some Republicans argue healthcare (or lack thereof) makes me so mad. I tweeted this HuffPo article yesterday “I don’t know how to explain to you why you should care about other people” and I can relate to it so much. If I hear one more Republican talk about “access to healthcare” (NOT actual coverage, because that would mean that you have to be able to afford the healthcare you theoretically have “access” to) and giving people choices to “tailor their health insurance to their needs” (which means people (women!) who undeniably will have more health care needs than others will ALWAYS be disadvantaged), I am going to scream. Why is it so difficult for people in this country to understand that creating a support system for ALL, a system that is supported by everybody and that supports everybody, is the way to go? What is this ‘me, me, me’- mentality? (Please, if you have any solid argument, enlighten the ignorant European in me, because I can’t for the life of me understand that mindset!)

+ I had this splendid idea back in April to not only get a long-overdue hair cut, but also throw some color in the mix. Switch things up a little bit, you know?  It seemed like a good idea at the time, but you guessed it, now the color has faded and is growing out and while I am not in need of a trim yet (I usually go quite a few months between trims), I do want to cover up these darker roots that are showing up, or better still, get my hair colored back to my original color so that I don’t have to deal with these root issues. So, do I go to the hairdresser to get my color changed back or do I consider a home-coloring attempt to fix this?

+ My sister had a pretty crappy month of June. First she had her bike stolen (on her anniversary, of all days!), then her husband was in a (minor) car accident. My nephew had a minor concussion and was in the hospital for two nights, then my niece got sick with gastrointestinal issues and then last weekend her kitchen flooded and caused a short-circuit (which probably ruined her dishwasher). Ugh, I mean, it’s really enough for one month, don’t you think?  I am really hoping July will be a much better month for her! As always, I feel guilty for not being closer and able to help out. Sigh.

+ Do you also struggle with the fast passage of time? I can’t believe we’re halfway through 2017. I am trying to stay mindful and in the moment, because I know that this is where perception of time slows down, but I also know that I want to do more, see more and make more memories and planning for all that is hard sometimes without getting lost in all the possibilities, but also restrictions (financial, time, commitments). Maybe I just need a proper vacation?
