Thinking Out Loud #13

Time to link up again with Amanda from Running with Spoons for Thinking out Loud for some random thoughts on a random Thursday.

+ I ran my first 3 miles of 2018 this morning. I am so relieved I am finally getting to the gym again! I know, it’s already January, 18th and I am getting a late start to running this year. As I mentioned, I caught a cold the flu (I am pretty sure that’s what it was) the week before Christmas and was basically completely “down” for a whole week and then still dealing with the after effects until last weekend. I had a lingering cough and some rib pain that I am pretty sure was associated with that and just overall didn’t feel ‘right’.

And the annoying thing about rib pain? It’s the little brother of back pain and it hurts basically any time you move your body in any direction… which makes it really hard to start your exercise regime again without continuously re-aggravating the rib muscles/membranes. I also suffered from heartburn for a few days last week (and felt like my heart was going to explode out of my chest. Just lovely and not how you want to feel when you exercise.)
All this to say, I am finally feeling better (hallelujah!) and need to get back to my routine, because you all know what happens when you stop a routine for too long!

+ My gym smelled like bacon grease this morning (it’s next to a BBQ place and they must be sharing the venting system). I am still debating if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Who’s hungry?

New Instagram Algorithm Changes in January 2018. Why Instagram? You make me want to pull my hair out. I have a private account, I don’t follow a whole lot of “business accounts”, so I really do not want “suggestions” in my feed. All I want to do is to be able to follow the people I subscribe to in chronological order. At least make this an option. Which part of this don’t you understand?

+ J and I did a “happiness jar” last year and we wrote down and put one happy thought for each week into the jar. We forgot to read through the notes at the end of the year (I am planning to do that soon!), but it was so much fun to focus on one good thought per week (even if the week felt shitty), because there is always something good to focus on. Have you done a happy jar? I highly recommend it.

+ We (aka my coworkers and I, other agencies, and people who rely on them) are threatened – yet again – with a government shutdown this weekend. Of course, people are joking on Twitter that “the government that doesn’t do anything is threatening to shut down and not do anything”…hahaha… very funny, but actually, the fact is, Congress – which is the part of the government that doesn’t do their job – wouldn’t shut down, while all the government agencies that are actually doing their jobs would be furloughed.
Sounds about right, doesn’t it? Hmpf.

  1. I hope everything works out and that your job isn’t affected by the government shutdown. And yes that sounds about right—insert eyeroll emoji.

I’m glad you are feeling better again!! I had a horrible cold that lasted nearly two weeks and it was terribly annoying but it’s not nearly as horrible as what you had. And rib pain sounds painful :( glad you are back at gym and feeling much better!

Love the idea of a happy jar! May have to try this!!

    1. Sounds like everybody has been sick in one way or another recently. Glad you’re better.

  2. A happy jar is an awesome idea!

    1. It was so much fun too!

  3. I hope Congress gets its act together so you don’t get furloughed! I hate that they do this every couple of years. Our government is just so dysfunctional these days.

I’m glad you are feeling better and are able to get back to running. Those cold/flu bugs are so hard to get over. And rib or back pain really is the worst!

I hadn’t heard about IG changing their algorithsm AGAIN. Ay yi yi. It seems like my feed has gotten better recently. For awhile there I was seeing IG posts from like 5-7 days ago. Um, that’s not what I want to see, IG! I wish it was just chronological. I don’t want friend or business recommendations.

    1. I don’t understand why IG can’t just let us see what we subscribe too *eyeroll*

  4. I am so unhappy about the Instagram changes I could scream. Social media, why you not play nice?? I’m glad you got back to the gym finally and I’m laughing about the bacon smell. I really need to start the Happiness Jar! And I hope your job isn’t affected by a shutdown, yikes!

    1. IG is getting ridiculous, but I can’t quit it.

And yeah, the grease smell at the gym definitely is ridiculous ;)

  5. I’m glad you’re finally feeling better San! The smell of bacon when I’m working out does not sound appealing at all. This Administration is absolutely ridiculous and that’s all I’ll say about that. You can’t control it so if you’re furloughed try to make the most of it!

Love the idea of the happiness jar!!

    1. This administration really is the worst. They’re right when they talk about Trump Anxiety.

  6. I hate hearing about these possible government shut downs. It’s just ridiculous, and hurts a lot of people.

Love the idea of a Happy Jar! I hope you can read through your notes from last year soon. :)

And Instagram kind of drives me insane. Seriously.

    1. I wish the Dems had gotten more out of the 3-day shutdown.

  7. I’m torn on the shutdown. I don’t think the dems should keep voting for long term solutions when DACA and CHIP isn’t covered. Yet, I don’t want the gov’t to shutdown because that affects people’s lives.

The repubs are trying very hard to get out the narrative that if the gov’t shuts down, it’s the dem’s fault. Hmmm… but the dems are not in control of the house, senate, or white house so if the repubs had their shit together they could pass it with nary a democrat’s vote.

The thing is, Trump did this. He decided to rescind DACA and threw it to Congress. Then when they came to him with a bipartisan bill, he said no… even though a week earlier he said he would sign whatever they brought and “take the heat”.

    1. I came back to correct something. I believe they need 60 votes for the senate to pass so they would need about 10 dem votes.

      1. I agree with you, I wasn’t really upset about the possibility of a shutdown, because I understood why the Dems were doing it… I also think that they need to pass a long-term budget and can’t just operate on these short-term spending bills. Get your act together, Congress.

  8. I’m going to tell you…I was just diagnosed with a vitamin B12 and a vitamin D deficiency and it’s so incredibly painful. My muscles and bones hurt 24 hours a day. I’ve never experienced anything like this in my entire life. The reason I bring this up is because you had mentioned your pain and a cold. Perhaps look up vitamin D? I am now preaching this LOL. I have my whole family taking vitamin D now. I had no idea that a lack of vitamin could wreak havoc like this. My pain specialist said he recommends everyone take it too. Anyways, I just thought that I’d toss it out there. I hope that you feel better soon!!

    1. Interesting. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

  9. Glad you are feeling better!!

  10. This whole shut down thing is nuts. My sister and bother in law, and lots of friends are dealing with this too. People have jokes, and most of them have no idea what they are really laughing at. The gym I go to is surrounded by fried chicken and burger joints. And a Krispy Kreme. Who does that?!? Glad you are feeling better!

  11. When I watch the news, it doesn’t feel real… 45 wants a wall, before he can agree to do anything about the dreamers, until they talk about his wall. That makes no sense! the wall, first of fall, is completely ridiculous and will cost a lot of money, and second this are human beings and their lives they are gambling with!

What do you do? We are funded by the government, but it would have to be about 1 month of shutdown, before our program is affected.

    1. I work for the Department of Interior (I am a geographer). Our funding comes a lot from cooperaters, not from the government directly, but we were still furloughed.

  12. Yay, glad you are feeling better! I also hate how they keep changing the Instagram algorithms.

    1. I don’t understand why IG can’t just let us see what we want to see (in chronological order). Sigh.

  13. It is SO HARD to get back to running when you’ve been out sick. I also have been known to make myself sick all over again by pushing myself back into running before my body was entirely ready for it and I have regretted that mistakes immensely. Here’s to hoping your health is finally back and you can get back out there!
