Recognizing the good things

Picture 025

A few weeks ago, we saw a friend for her (and my belated) little birthday party. We went to a little tea room and had delicious, freshly brewed lose-leaf tea and yummy appetizers. As we were sitting in this tiny little place, I felt incredibly blessed for what we believe to be the simple pleasures in life: a hot cup of tea, delicious food, good times with friends. Even if I had all the money in the world, besides the cup of tea and food, it could never buy me what tied the whole afternoon together: good company, honest and meaningful conversations, shared and cherished moments.

Good company can be had by the closest of friends or by strangers – and every possible relationship type in between. I recall many, many honest, deep and inspiring conversation with people who happened to sit next to me on airplanes.
Hardly ever were numbers or email addresses exchanged, but I remember those moments as times when we shared a mutual moment of our lives. A moment shared with a  stranger, whose life couldn’t be more different, no more separated from mine, but in the end, looking back we’ll both have created the same memory, we’ll possibly both remember that exact moment when our lives intertwined.

  1. I adore this. It’s totally sweet and very true – even if someone may not be a close friend, if you share a great conversation or a funny moment with them they’re definitely planted in your memory with fondness :) I’m slightly jealous of your tea party however – perhaps that’s what I’ll do for mine this year! :)

  2. Every Wednesday, when I go to Weight Watchers, I leave 1 1/2 hours early. Why? Because there are 6 of us that meet up before the meeting to sit, drink our coffee, talk and share our lives. That one morning a week just warms my heart!

  3. This was beautiful.

  4. Special moments like these with cherished friends really are priceless.

  5. Those little moments that sneak up on you before you can realize how memorable they are going to be later are some of my favorite moments.

  6. Sometimes, I think about strangers and the ones who have made an impact on me, and I wonder if they wonder about me, too. This is such a lovely entry.

  7. Beautiful post! I’ve really been craving good company and honest and meaningful conversation ~ I love my husband but lately I’ve really been needing time with female friends …

  8. Awww…I am a little jealous, I want some time for myself with my girl-friends, I haven’t really had some time off from being a mommy for a while plus one of my best friends lives in Chicago and I haven’t seen her since September. Most of my friends now are mommys too so when we meet it is usually together with the kids.
I however meet every week for a playdate with 4 other mommys at one of our houses for a coffee and some talking. Now that the kids are older they can play by themselves for a short while and if they don’t fight it even can be relaxing for a few minutes.

Maybe I should ask the mommys if we all want to go out for a drink some night, I mean the kids also have daddys that can take them to bed at least once, can’t they?

  9. What a great post! Once a week Collin and I venture out to Starbucks for some coffee. We usually sit there for an hour or two just talking about life. It’s the greatest.

  10. This was a very beautiful post. It’s often funny when we think of all the people we have met over the years and all those moments shared. Knowing that we’ll almost never see those people again lends a certain wistfulness to it all.

  12. yeah, very true. you make me think of many funny and good memories i made through all of my travels.

  13. There is nothing better than conversation with others, no where to be and no time constraints. I love meeting up with my friends for coffee.. It is always that sense of “I know I am going to be inspired from this conversation” even before attending.

    Best,

  14. What a wonderful way to look at it – that we both create a shared memory. I don’t think I’ve ever thought of it like that, but I love it.

  15. This is exactly the way I feel most days! I feel such fullness and richness from the smallest things in life. Something as small as the way the Dallas skyline looks in the morning on my drive to work…makes me feel alive and grateful!

I have a true obsession with the strangers I see/meet in airports and airplanes. Our lives intersecting out of mere coincidence, but creating a memory that lasts…I think that’s why I loved the movie “up in the air” so much.

This post is lovely…just like you :)
