Awkward & Awesome

This is a regular feature post on my blog. See the archives here.

AWKWARD

+ Slow computers. Or huge data sets. Or both. I just don’t have patience for this. Especially when I need to get things done.

+ People who talk very loudly. There is this maintenance guy in our office building and he basically ‘yells’ at you every time he comes by to check on something (which he does a lot). I wonder if he has a hearing problem.

+ We watched the 2nd presidential (town hall-style) debate on Sunday (with my parents, who probably only understood half of what was said, but were able to get the vibe nonetheless and wanted to see the ‘trainwreck’). So AWKWARD.

AWESOME

+ Hosting my parents. It’s been so fun having them stay with us the last couple of weeks. I will be so sad when they leave again.

+ Having one-on-one time with my parents. I took my dad to my gym for a workout (I wish we could go work out together more often) and to a pre-season NBA game. I also enjoyed a ‘girls day’ with my Mom at Apple Hill.  It’s just so nice to spend some quality time with each of them.

+ Dutch Apple Pie alla mode. That’s all.

+ Our new couch. Love it so much.

+  I haven’t talked about my homemade granola enough lately. I’ve been having it for breakfast pretty much every single day these last few months and I haven’t gotten tired of it yet. It’s just so good (and less sweet – only ⅓ cup of sweetener and oil). I’ve been thinking about switching up the recipe a bit, but I am hesitant to get too fancy. With a lot of other food things, I like the plain versions best. How do you like your granola?

+ Gunther’s Ice Cream. Oh eM Gee. So delicious.  Now I know why there is such a long line out the door all the time.

+ A run on the beach this week. It’s a special kind of treat. I wish I lived near the ocean.

+ A delivery of Stumptown coffee right to my door step. (I am always taking advantage when they offer free shipping!)

  1. Andrew’s ex wife is a loud talker. DRIVES ME CRAZY.

  2. Ugh. The guy whose office backs up to mine has an “outdoor” voice all the time. All day I hear him scream into the phone and in student advising appointments (and hear everything personal he says… AWKWARD)! I’ve even had to apologize to my own student advisees. Sadly, there is no other office left on our floor, and I’m the lowest Dean on the totem pole, so until my neighbor retires (or I move on!)… I’m stuck with him, dangit!

    1. What is it with people and their loud voices?? Gah!

  3. For me, it has been awesome to see all your Instagram photos with your parents. :) I just love that you get some one-on-one time with them. It’s making me happy!

  4. Love your new couch! The color is beautiful and it looks super comfy!
So happy to see how much fun you are having with your parents! What a blessing to have them visit you!
I know what it’s like to see visitors leave again, but thanks to Skype or FaceTime it’s so much easier to keep in touch!
    Happy Friday xxx

    1. Oh man, I wouldn’t know what to do without Skype or FaceTime!

  5. I am glad you are having such an awesome time with your parents!! And it’s great that you are getting some one-on-one time with both of them.

Awkward: the election, the debates, reading people’s justification for voting for Trump, seeing homeless people on the streets of Portland (and also sad but I include it in the awkward category as I felt a little uncomfortable at times in Portland).

Awesome: Getting away for 5 days, seeing so much beauty in Oregon, eating amazing GF meals, and that ‘home sweet home’ feeling when we walked in the door tonight.

    1. Oh man, I can’t wait for the election to be over… and hopefully with the right outcome, so we can move on to more important things.

  6. I’ve been told my voice carries….must be the theater training. I don’t mean to talk loudly, but I cannot stand whisperers when I’m asking “what?” every 3 seconds. Gaah!

    xox

  7. OMG that “debate” was SO AWKWARD. The SNL parody of it was on point.

So so so glad you got to spend time with your parents! I so wish both of our folks lived closer. *SIGH*
