Review | Target Refresh Beauty Box

Untitled

I was lucky enough earlier this month to snatch up another one of the ever-elusive Target Beauty Boxes (and I think by tweeting about it, I was able to get some other people the oportunity to get in on the deal). The Target beauty boxes don’t come out on a regular basis and when they do, you have to act fast, because they sell out in no time. And who is surprised.

Target offered two different boxes this time. The Refresh Beauty Box (which I got) and the Renewal Beauty Box. For the price of $7 (this time), you receive a nice selection of sample goodness (and even the occasional full-size product!).

This time was no different. There were a total of nine items in the box. Valued at $30, this was a steal for just $7 (and I again used a Target giftcard for most of the purchase).

So here’s what was in the box (*calculated value of the samples in parenthesis):

Simple Micellar Wipes (FULL SIZE! 25 wipes $6.99)
This item alone costs normally as much as the whole box. I don’t use makeup remover wipes on a daily basis, but I love to have them on hand for travel! They’re just perfect to stick in your purse or to take them instead of a bottle of liquid makeup remover. I also like the Simple brand. Their products are gentle to the skin and and have no artificial perfumes, dyes or harsh chemicals.

ACURE Day Cream (sample size 1 oz $9.70) regular 1.75 oz $16.99
I’ve heard about this brand and haven’t had a chance to try it out yet, so I was very pleased that this was part of this box. This is a generous sample size (more than half of the full size version) and the high-price item in this box. This day cream contains gotu kola stem cells and chlorella growth factor to help your skin retain hyaluronic acid and fight environmental damage and free radicals.

Marlowe Extra Moisturizing Lotion (sample size 1 oz $0.67) regular 15. oz $9.99
I love the size of this to throw into my purse or travel bag. It’s never a bad idea to have a moisturizer with revitalizing antioxidants and extracts on hand to help soften and smooth dry skin.

John Frieda Keraflex Hair Spray (sample size 2 oz $1.38 ) regular 13 oz $8.99
I don’t usually use much hairspray, but I guess it might be useful to have a small bottle around and Joh n Frieda is a reputable brand.

NIVEA In-Shower Body Lotion (sample size 2.7 oz $1.20) regular 13.5 0z $5.99
I like Nivea products, but have not used this in-shower body lotion yet.  It’s supposed to be skin-pampering and enriched with almond oil to give your skin instant moisture that lasts up to 24 hours. Again, great to take with you when you travel.

Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Pads (sample size 5 pads $1.08) regular 60 count $12.99
These radiance-boosting pads are soaked in exfoliating glycolic acid to help retexture and resurface to unveil younger-looking skin. I am up for trying these.

Scunci Braided Elastic Bands (2 bands $0.96) regular 6 count $2.87
Girls with long hair can never have enough hair ties, esp. the ones without metal.

Clear Total Care Shampoo (sample size 1.7 oz $0.66 ) regular 12.9 oz $4.99
This shampoo is supposed to help restore the scalp’s natural moisture balance, building a foundation for strong, beautiful hair.  I haven’t used this brand before, but that sounds good to me. Another one for the travel bag.

Clear Men 2-in-1 Complete Care (sampe size 1.7 oz $0.66  ) regular 12.9 oz $4.99
Hey look! They actually threw in an item for J this time. He actually likes the 2-in-1 products quite a bit, so that’s a bonus.

The total (actual calculated) value of this box was: $23.30.
I paid: $2.22 (the rest paid with a $5 Target promotional giftcard).

I really loved this box.  All of the items (maybe except for the hair spray) are items I will definitely use. I liked that this box offered a bit more variety than the last box and that I would be pretty much set for a weekend trip for almost all areas of skin and body care. I am most curious to try the Acure Day Cream and the Nivea In-Shower body lotion.

Were you able to snatch up one of the boxes this time around? Which box did you chose?

  1. I got the other box & think I actually would’ve liked this one a bit better. Alas, I was in such a hurry to buy before they sold out that I just picked out & went with it! Hope I can snag another in the future, though, because overall, this box is a great deal, & I will still use almost everything that came in mine.

    1. I am glad you were able to snatch up a box this time and I totally understand that you felt hurried (I felt the same way, because I was afraid they would be sold out again). But heads up: there is going to be another beauty box sale in February!

  2. That’s great that you definitely get your money’s worth when you purchase these boxes. I don’t buy any of these box sort of programs as I am not great at using samples and feel like they just accumulate until I force myself to use them when traveling… But I’m kind of set in my ways in terms of what beauty products I use (100% arbonne for face products, bare minerals for make-up). I think this would be a great gift for a friend that loves trying new beauty boxes, though. It’s just too bad that they sell out so darn fast!

    1. I understand that these boxes are not for everyone. I like to try new things every once in a while and I especially like the sample sizes for travel (to pack lighter).

  3. I totally dropped the ball on this! Thank you for tweeting me and letting me know it was available. I just didn’t act fast enough. I still want to try this. I just signed up for Ipsy, a monthly subscription service where you get 5 makeup products for $10/mo. I’ll let you know if it’s worth looking into!

    1. There is going to be another box in February – heads up!

  4. Like Kate, I got the other Beauty box and while some of the products I’ll use, I just don’t thing I’m much of a “box subscription” person. I despise clutter, especially in my bathroom for some reason, so having a bunch of sample-size products is not my favorite. I’ll probably try some of the products, and for $7 it is a STEAL so I can’t complain about the price at all, and I’m glad I tried it out (thanks for tweeting at me!).

    1. I totally get it. I vowed to not buy any more beauty products until I have used up everything in my bathroom ;) still, the $7 were just too good of a deal and I actually do use the samples when I travel.

  5. Cool, I have never heard of this before (probably because it came out after I moved to Germany). But that is a great deal! Do you buy it in the store or online?

    1. You order the boxes online (with a RedCard it also comes with free shipping). Doesn’t DM have a box like that now? I thought I had heard something like that.

  6. I miss Target :( They ship to Canada now but their shipping prices are ridiculous so I have yet to order anything. It sounds like a really good deal, though! I’ve thought about joining a subscription service like ipsy (makeup samples) but I have yet to take the plunge!
