He’s two!

March 14, 2012 filed under: birthday, family, Germany

Picnik collage

Tom is two years old today!

My, oh my, where does the time go? My sweet little nephew is not a baby anymore! And he can say my name now and he recognizes me on the computer screen when we skype. It’s really amazing to see him grow up.

My Mom made this birthday cake train for him – the cake is called “Kalter Hund” (which literally means “cold dog”, since it’s a no-bake cake) and my Mom already used to make this when my sister and I were little. Definitely brings back childhood memories and I most certainly wish I could indulge in a piece right now. Everybody is gathered at my sister’s place again. You know, birthdays are a big deal in our family and there are always celebrations happening on the actual day of someone’s birthday. I love that tradition.

As always, I wish I could have been there for this milestone, but as so often, I couldn’t. At least, we already had a little Skype session this morning and he yelled “Saaaandraaaaa”, when he saw my face on the screen. It made my heart melt and I just wish I could hug and kiss him on this special day.

Awwww San, it must be so hard to be so far from family! It’s so nice that you keep in close contact with Skype, and he looks SO PRECIOUS. Happy birthday to the little one :)

What a cutie! I know how you feel, not being able to be there for his birthday. I have a nephew who will be a year old in June that I haven’t even met yet! Living so far away from family stinks – but at least we can skype!

I’m way impressed with that cake! I’ll forever be the mother who will buy impressive cakes from someone who has made cake-making their career! =) Happy birthday to Tom!

He is gorgeous! I love Skype. When I lived in VA (which is totally not the same distance as you’re facing), we didn’t have skype, etc… so I could talk to my family on the phone but not see them. I’m very lucky that my brother’s didn’t start having children until I had moved back to MA. I’m very grateful to be near them. But I can see how hard it must be for you. Happy Birthday to him too!

that cake is adorable – so what is in it? I am intrigued by the fact that it’s a cold cake? I think 2-3 of my 5 nephews have had train cakes!! They are just something every little boy needs to have.

he is just adorable. I am glad you were able to skype with him – it is so tough to miss out on family celebrations. :( I live pretty close to mine and still miss out on them. :( Thank goodness for things like skype, though!!

Oh goodness, Tom is absolutely precious! It has to be hard to be away from family but Skype can be such a godsend in these situations. I’m so glad you were able to talk with him! It’s crazy how fast they grow!
