2: Five things you might not know about me

I am doing NaBloPoMo this month. 30 blog posts in 30 days. Come join me. #nablopomo2019

I’m starting off this blog posting month again by sharing 5 things you might not know about me; as an introduction for any new readers (hi!), and to share some random facts for anyone who’s been around for a while. I have shared random facts in previous years, if you want to find out more (here, here, and here).

1.Hi, I am San and I live in Northern California with my husband Jon, who I met during an exchange semester here in the States. I grew up in Germany, but have lived in the U.S. for almost two decades now. I wrote a little bit about my life-changing move to the US, here,  a couple of years ago and about the decision to come to California in the first place, here. Crazy to think how one tiny decision can change the trajectory of your life.

2. I work as a geographer for a well-known government agency and I love the outdoors. I don’t get out into the field with my job as much as I’d like, but it’s still fun and interesting work (most of the time) and I try to get out to the NPs on my own time whenever I can.

3. I am crazy loyal, sometimes to a fault, I might say. I am getting better at setting boundaries and letting some relationships, that don’t serve me anymore, go, but generally I tend to hang on to things and people.

4. I haven’t been single since the age of 16. Sometimes I wish I would have had a period of singledom, because I do believe spending some time alone without a partner for a while can be a good experience for anyone, but that’s just not how life happened for me. I can’t say that I envy people who have to date in this day and age (I am looking at you, social media and dating apps), so I guess, I shouldn’t complain and embrace my own journey. Besides, I have the experience of a LDR to show for. It was definitely a learning opportunity, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

5. I used to have a skiing instructor’s license from the DSV (German Ski Association). I studied P.E. and was able to obtain the license in college. I wasn’t able to maintain it though because it needs to be officially renewed every few years, but I am still proud I had it at one point in my life.

Tell me one random interesting thing about you!

  1. Ha, while I knew most facts I still learned something new. I also wanted to get Ski instructor license at one point of my life but I never followed through or lacked ambition. I always wondered if the exam was tough. Loving to read more tomorrow.

    1. Ha, I didn’t know that you were an avid skier (or did I?)…. that’s awesome.

  2. This is a great idea for Nablomopo intros! I’ve been reading your blog & following you on Twitter for a few years now, but I always learn new things with these posts!

I’ve been working on learning how to set boundaries. It’s hard, especially letting go of the anxiety about disappointing someone else by putting my own sanity first. But it’s definitely worth it!

    1. I love that we’ve been connected for such a long time already! Thanks for always stopping by during NaBloPomo! And…
Oh man, so true…. it’s so hard to let go of the anxiety about disappointing someone else by putting our own sanity first. I totally agree.

  3. Two decades!?!? Time flies! It’s so crazy to think that I have been following you since almost the very beginning (I think maybe since 2004/2005?).

Random fact about me (well, Nathen and I): I am 7 years older than him.

    1. I know! We’ve ‘known’ each other for quite some time!! Another random fact, I am also 6.5 years older than Jon. Samsies :)

  4. Hi, San! I found you via NaBloPoMo but also — small world — I’m internet friends with GFM (above).

Random fact about me: I’m technically a cyborg. I’ve had a pacemaker since I was 28.

    1. Small world! Thanks for stopping by and saying Hi! :) And wow, a pacemaker since you were 28. Well, better to not have one if you need it ;)

  5. I love posts where you learn more about fellow bloggers. Point no. 3 is essential and something I’m also working on. Love the story on how you and Jon met and that is so cool you have a ski instructors licence!

Random fact: I married the boy next door when I was 23. We were neighbours and when I heard he was moving, I phoned him and asked him out. Best decision I ever made :)

    1. That is so cool that your husband was your neighbor!

  6. I love random facts. I did one of these posts sometime last year I think, and I STILL need to do longer posts for some of them to give more details. hah

    -Lauren

    1. So fun to learn random facts about people! Looking forward to another round from you :)

  7. I’m your opposite when it comes to relationships! I was mostly single from age 18 until I met Phil at age 31! I had a handful of relationship over those years, but none lasted longer than 10 months. Then I met Phil and he was it for me! We had a bumpy road as I got relocated to Charlotte and he lost his dad but once I move back to MInneapolis in 2014, we were in it for good and got married in 2017. It felt like a long road from when we met until we got married but now it feels like no time at all.

    1. Isn’t this crazy how things work out sometimes? I am so glad you found Phil when you found him. It was the right time for you guys!

  8. Hm… a random fact about me… I hate wearing dresses and skirts and high heels! I like getting dressed up, but I never, ever feel comfortable in those clothes for some reason, so I rarely wear them anymore. (I have one pair of high heels that are my “emergency” pai. I’ll only wear them when I have to.)

    1. I like dresses and (some) high heels but I always feel there are not many opportunities to wear them. I always feel overdressed when I do.

  9. I think it would be so hard to be dating right now with all the social media stuff! Especially for “older” people. I think if I was in my early 20s it would be ok, but now that I’m in my late 30s it would be really weird.

    1. As a 40-year-old dating right now… yep. It’s weird. XD
