BACK AT WORK
I was a little hesitant to return to work on Wednesday because that was where I had my health scare last week. Like I said, it happened towards the end of the day when I was alone in the office, because I am usually the last one in the office, so that was going to be the case again this week. But it’s not like I can stay home. I have a few theories of why what happened last week happened (stay tuned for a more detailed post about that), so I am trying to make some progressive changes at work, mainly by being more mindful about staying hydrated and not being sedentary all day.
Those changes are:
- use my standing desk more often (I did that for a while and then got lazy)
- use my Garmin alert to tell me when to stand up and move around/stretch
- keep my water bottle filled up (and keep sipping)
- take an actual break to eat lunch (are you also guilty of eating while working? Stop doing that.)
- go for a short lunch walk
RETAIL THERAPY
I bought a hammock last weekend. I was in a mopey mood because of not feeling that great and having to cancel my trip to Boston, and my brother in law (my sister’s husband) suggested in an off-hand comment that I should get a hammock and just take it easy for a little while. I don’t know if it was just a little joke to make me feel better, but it sparked something in me. I’d better not tell you for how long I’ve been thinking about buying a hammock. It’s a bit ridiculous. It’s not a HUGE expense, so I don’t really know why I haven’t gotten one before. I guess I just needed a spontaneous, random “permission” to finally spend the money. (Believe me, I am very aware how silly that sounds.) I only had the hammock for a few days and it’s already brought me so much joy. Needless to say, I am planning to spend a lot of time in it this summer.
CA PRIMARIES
You might – or might not – know that we’re having a primary election in June. We’re (sadly) voting to replace governor Gavin Newsom (his term is ending).
California utilizes a top-two primary system where all candidates are listed on the same ballot. The top two vote-getters, regardless of their partisan affiliations, advance to the general election. Consequently, it is possible that two candidates belonging to the same political party could win in a top-two primary and face off in the general election. Well, and a very crowded field of Democratic candidates risks splitting the vote so heavily that the top-two Republican candidates – who normally would not really stand a chance – could advance to the November ballot, completely locking the Democrats out of the general election.
It’s a complicated decision to make. I want to vote for the candidate that I think is right for the job, but might have to vote for my „second choice“ because of polling numbers. Currently, it does look like a Xavier Becerra (Democrat and served as Secretary of Health and Human Services under Biden) and Steve Hilton (Republican endorsed by Tr*mp) are leading the polls, Tom Steyer (progressive billionaire) is in third place. But obviously, we cannot elect a Republican in November. I know California had Republican governors before and we survived it, but in the current political climate, it would be devastating.
WHATSAPP CIRCLE VIDEOS
Have you seen/used the circle video feature in Whatsapp? They’re officially called “Instant Video Notes“, which let you record and send short, 60-second video clips directly in your chats. These videos play automatically on mute, and are captured in a distinctive circular frame. My cousin has been sending me these little video messages from his runs (and I’ve been sending him some back) and it’s been so motivating to see these little blips pop up in my messages. Makes me smile every single time.
MY OWALA WATER BOTTLE
Owalas are the new Stanley Cups. You heard it here first. I swear I wasn’t influenced. I bought an Owala* bottle on a whim with Tanja, when she was here to visit in early March, and had previously not even heard of it… and then, BAM, when I returned from my trip to Germany, Owalas were suddenly EVERYWHERE. I mean, I am not surprised. They’re pretty cool water bottles with a so-called „FreeSip“ feature; a built-in straw and wide-mouth opening on the same lid. They’re leakproof, come in pretty colors and keep my water cool. What else would you possibly want? Oh, it matches my Mepal* Lunch Pot (which I also love).

BONUS NOTE
Today is Tanja‘s birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, sweet friend, so happy you were born! I wish I could celebrate with you in person today! I hope you have the best day!
*not an ad. I bought these things with my own money.

May 22, 2026 at 2:41 pmSomeone else recently mentioned the Owala, who was that? Oh, maybe Suzanne! I am out of the loop. I have so many water bottles, I cannot even think of having more! I have a bunch of Swell bottles from when I was teaching yoga.
I hope you’re feeling better, friend. I support you and your hammock rests!

May 24, 2026 at 4:06 pmHaha, yes, Suzanne mentioned the Owala and if it hadn’t been for the straw-and-sip feature, I probably wouldn’t have bought another bottle either ;)

May 22, 2026 at 5:38 pmA hammock sounds lovely! Seeing your photo, I can understand why Owalas are all the rage – it’s very pretty. The Mepal Lunch Pot is also gorgeous. It was so much fun to do Peloton Yoga with you this morning! When I saw you there, I just had to join in. Whew, it was a tough one for me! I couldn’t do a lot of the moves, but I just modified and kept going. It was a great feeling knowing you were there!

May 23, 2026 at 12:43 amI love owala introduced by my daughter. I take it everywhere!
what’s that mug with granola? is that yogurt parfait? looks great.
hope you are feeling better physically and emotionally after the scare.
San
May 24, 2026 at 4:08 pmYes, the Mepal lunch pot is for yogurt (bottom) and granola (top). :) They screw together for easy transportation!
I’ve been feeling a lot better this week – thanks for asking!

May 23, 2026 at 3:55 amI am so glad you went out and bought the hammock and it is already bringing you joy. Yay, for simple mood boosters!
I did not know that you could end up having to choose between to Republican candidates for governor. The US voting systems are so complicated.

May 24, 2026 at 4:08 pmYes, yay for simple mood boosters! ;) and yes, the US votign system is not only complicated, but also crazy!

May 23, 2026 at 12:23 pmI bought myself an Owala for Christmas. I love it! I don’t find the leak proof aspect foolproof as it has oddly leaked in my purse. I also have a Stanley but it’s at my office. I prefer the Owala!
San
May 24, 2026 at 4:09 pmOh yay, you also have an Owala bottle. I am sorry to hear that it spilled because it’s been totally leakproof for me so far (which I love). I also just love the build in straw!

May 23, 2026 at 6:16 pmHaving been to your house (at least outside) I think you live in a great neighborhood for a hammock! Our back yard abuts a parking lot for an apartment building, so we don’t spend a ton of time out back. I’m glad you bought yourself a treat after missing your trip to Boston, and such a healthy, nourishing treat too!
Still waffling on my vote…I still want to vote for Porter, but I may go Becerra because of the polls. Sigh.

May 24, 2026 at 4:11 pmI really enjoy our patio, although our back wall is right next to the City freeway, so it can be a little noisy at times… but that’s what noise-canceling headphones are for :) I still haven’t filled out my ballot… we have a few more days! GAH! This is hard.

May 24, 2026 at 1:08 amGood thing you’ve gotten yourself a hammock.
I am the same as you that I never really by the things I really want because I don’t need them. My husband can’t understand this way of thinking and keeps telling me I should invest in myself more often. It is very hard, isn’t it? And it’s mostly the small ridiculous things too.

May 27, 2026 at 12:44 pmI am SO GLAD you bought yourself a hammock! That is going to be a GREAT purchase for you – good time in the sun, relaxing! That’s what we all need right now.
I have an Owala! I think we have the same color water bottle. I bought mine last fall because I wanted something to bring on my London trip that I could toss in a bag and it wouldn’t spill. And then I realized everyone had an Owala! Ha.

May 31, 2026 at 8:37 pmI’ve been using my hammock almost daily since I got. I really don’t know why I didn’t get one sooner. It’s perfect for reading, too :)
So funny you also owned an Owala before it became hip. LOL It is a nice bottle :)

June 4, 2026 at 8:23 amI am envious of you having a hammock. I would love to have something like that, but my little patio/balcony thing is right by the front door to the building. Since someone could climb the fence and use whatever I have out there, I just have a few (uncomfortable) chairs out there. (I do love the apartment, I do not love this part of the apartment.) Anyway, please continue to share photos so I can live vicariously through you. :)
