And I needed that Atlantic article by way of a reminder that “no one cares.”
I’ve been beating myself up for a renovation decision. It’s tiny, insignificant but it’s irking me. I think I okayed the placement of a pot-light in the wrong location at the front of the house (it was complicated and very hard to visualize properly until they were in and turned on). I’ve been berating myself for almost a day now (it’s actually pretty easy to fix, and will get done without much expense or bother)…and one of the things I’ve been saying “Someone is going to drive by and say – why did the person living there put that light off-center?”
1) No one is going to do that. It’s such a minor thing, and I don’t think I’d take a second look if it wasn’t my house and
2) WHO CARES. Like really – WHO CARES if someone thinks I had a light put off-centre.
Learning how to actually internalize the fact that people don’t care…now that’s the tricky bit.

I think we’re both people who hold ourselves up to high standards, and so we think that the “little things” we notice, everybody will notice (and care about), too. That is NOT the case (and I do have to remind myself of that all the time!).

I keep thinking about how expensive it is to be poor (a running theme through the book “Nickel and Dimed” which I read at least a decade ago and consistently comes to mind when I read things like this). I often hear people talking about savings pennies, but if you take away your splurges and there’s still no progress in your financial health, where is the joy in living? It’s so hard.

December 21, 2021 at 6:56 amI need to read the No One Cares article. That was something a good friend from college often tells me. No one cares. And really, they don’t! Or if they do care, and it’s about a decision you know is the right one for you, then you shouldn’t care that they care – but that is easier said than done!

I tried to reconnect with an old friend right before covid. and while it was nice we never really hit it off. We don’t have much in common but I am hopeful that our childhood friendship is meaningful again one day.
