Five Things Friday Vol. 127

BLOGGING

I am behind on blogging and blog reading again and you might have noticed that I am taking a going-backwards kind of approach to catching up with all of you. Let’s see how far I get before traveling will derail my best efforts once again. (How you all keep on top of posting – some of you almost daily – while working, taking care of families (and yourselves) and/or traveling – is beyond me but all I can say is that I am trying my best.

QUALITY TIME

The reason for my being MIA in the last couple of weeks: Tanja was here for 9 days over my birthday! We had the best time and I am so thankful that she was able to come and spend time with me. I know it was a little bit for her own benefit (because I know she just missed California terribly), but a lot more for my selfish benefit because she was here to hang out with me on my big birthday and that was the second best thing to spending it with my sister (haha). What a treat!

RECOVERY

I had a low-key recovery week after my race on Sunday. My new Garmin watch (which I’ll have to tell you all about sometime) predicted an 80-hour recovery (3.3 days) and this pretty much jived with how I was feeling (sore!) the first few days after the half marathon. It was nice to sleep in a little longer and to focus on yoga and some light strength training sessions this week.

HEAT WAVE

While other parts of the country are dealing with snow or torrential rain, California is experiencing an early season heat wave with temps into the 90s this week. I’ve been to the pool and I’ve been wearing shorts and flip flops. But in a little over a week, I’ll be on the way to the Alps for some skiing with my family. Wild. [*whispers*] This is climate change. How’s the weather where you are?

WEEKEND PLANS

I am working today, so it’s a “short” weekend for me. I usually get my grocery shopping and other errands done on Fridays, so I have time on the weekend to do other things, but because I am working today, I’ll be doing my grocery shopping and some errands done on Saturday. And I will be getting ready for my trip home because I leave on Tuesday! I am so excited.

  1. how was your race? 80 hours recovery seems a long time but it may be because of the effort? curious to know more about it. I almost never comply with Garmin’s recovery recommendation though.

  2. I am equally mystified by how people stay on top of posting and commenting on blogs. I’m in a similar ‘coming from behind’ catch up situation regularly. I’m so excited for your upcoming ski trip. I hope you have the best time. Our weather has been so nuts. Record breaking (one piece over 6 in and weighing 1 pound) hail a few weeks ago. Then torrential rain on Sunday, a snowstorm Monday, and warmer temps Wednesday. We had flooding and blizzard conditions on the same day (blizzard was further north from me). Warmer weekend. I’m envious of your pool weather.

  3. By Friday, my Garmin tells me I need 96 hours of recovery time. Lol! Okay then, Garmin! It seems to think I am a very delicate flower. I don’t even run anymore!

  4. I get so behind in my commenting! That’s my biggest blog issue. Climate change is WILD. We had a blizzard a few days ago and a high of 80 yesterday **yikes face**

  5. I only post 1-2 times/week. That’s all I can manage. And I have fallen behind on commenting lately! I am giving you permission to not catch up on my blog/comment!

Our weather has been wild. We had a blizzard last Sunday and yesterday it was 77. Today the high is in the 40s. It’s just all over the place. Like pick a season, Mother Nature!!

  6. I’m behind on blogging, too, but i have a different approach than you do. I just pretend I’m caught up and dive into the most current post. If it seems like I missed something I can’t figure out, I will go back and read, but that does not happen much! And it saves me from feeling stressed out that I’m so far behind I’ll never catch up.

  7. I’m with Engie, I don’t really try to catch up on older blog posts unless it feels like I’ve missed something important. That means I’m sometimes out of the loop. Someone will write ‘surgery went well’ and then of course I will go back and try to figure that situation out.

I’m so glad you had so much fun with your friend! AND a trip to look forward to, and now it’s Monday so you’re leaving tomorrow. EXCITING! I hope you have an amazing time with your family and skiing. <3

  8. I am perpetually behind on blogging. It seems that if I even miss one day, my reader is OUT OF CONTROL. I am such a completionist that I like making sure I’m reading every post, but I should probably adopt Engie/Julie’s way. It seems a lot calmer!
