The high of my week was the anticipation of a weekend trip to Las Vegas. My friend Lindsay (one of the #BCBabes1) is having her baby shower and Kristin, Melissa, and I were going to just show up and surprise her. We had it all planned out, I had employed Lindsay’s husband to help us pull off the surprise, and the excitement had been building all week. I was finally going to meet three of the four #BCBabes that I had been working out – and building friendships with – for the last couple of years.
The low of my week was that I got sick at the office and felt – and sounded – so awful this morning when I woke up that I had to cancel my weekend trip because I could not in good conscience travel and expose them all to whatever I am dealing with. It was a really hard decision to make and I am so bummed that I couldn’t go. I had been looking forward to this weekend and some girls’ time so much. I really needed this time and a little break from the sh*tshow that is regular life right now. This is sadly very on par with how my 2025 has been going so far. Seriously, WHAT IS IT WITH THIS YEAR???
One nagging task I marked off my to-do list was having a difficult conversation with someone. I don’t like confrontation but will speak up when needed. I think conflicts are often caused by bad communication and I am always trying to improve.
Therefore, a recommendation I have for you is Jefferson Fisher, a trial lawyer, keynote speaker, and author of the book “The Next Conversation – Argue less, talk more” (which I currently have on hold at the library). He’s on Instagram and also has a podcast and has some great tips on better ways to effectively communicate.
The best money I spent was $12.45 on a take-out burrito for dinner. Yup, that’s what a burrito (a la carte) costs now in California. I think that’s actually on the cheaper side. I remember when the same burrito was like $8.95 not too long ago. Inflation much?
My plans this weekend include sleeping, drinking copious amounts of tea with honey, and wallowing in self-pity. With my luck, I’ll be all better by Monday to just return back to the place where I contracted the illness (the office) without having had the fun weekend that I was supposed to have. Can we blame he-who-should-not-be-named for ruining my weekend because people come to the office sick now when previously they could have just worked from home? Ok, I’ll stop.
Have a good weekend, I’ll try to have the same.

April 5, 2025 at 3:06 amOh San… life really is throwing truckloads of lemons at you and you can only make so much lemonade… I am so so sorry you had to miss that weekend. Not cool. Definitely blaming it all on the orange narcissist (I am done calling him clown because I believe the know exactly what he is doing).
Food is so so expensive. I paid like 9€ for a Döner in January. Remember when they were 2.50€?
San
April 5, 2025 at 8:34 pmYeah, you know I am a big fan of lemonade but I’ve had enough lately…
9€ for a döner! Wow!

April 5, 2025 at 5:38 amUgh, I’m so sorry about your trip. There are many reasons why I love WFH, and getting sick less frequently is one of them. So it is very disappointing that the trend has shifted back to work in office, and yes it’s fair to blame a certain person who is dead set on taking us back to the stone ages.
Nom nom burrito. I think that’s about what I paid for the Last Great Burrito that I had in November. It was in West Virginia after a long day of hiking.
My #1 way of dealing with conflict is avoiding it, which has not served me well. So I’m off to check out the Jefferson Fisher link.

April 5, 2025 at 8:36 pmThanks friend. I am a bit salty about the colleagues how all came in coughing and weezing … but yeah, not having the option to work from home, people don’t take sick days as much as they maybe should.
I am definitely not good at conflict and I do try to avoid it but I also know that’s not always a healthy approach either. I am curious to hear what you think if you checked out Jefferson Fisher. I think he’s pretty incredible. Good tips!

April 5, 2025 at 7:18 amUgh! That is the worst, San! I am so so sorry! I fear the same thing will happen in my office although our in office requirement is less (3 days). I would definitely be wallowing if I was you. Gah the universe is really piling a lot on you right now. :(
We are having a quiet weekend as Will got his tonsils and adenoids + another set of tubes yesterday. He did pretty well the first day but I know the first several days will be ROUGH.

April 5, 2025 at 8:36 pmThanks friend for commiserating. I wish people would just stay home when they’re sick.
How’s Will doing?

April 5, 2025 at 7:32 amI am so bummed for you! One always gets sick at just the worst time, how frustrating. I hope you get another opportunity to meet up with your friends. Feel better soon!
San
April 5, 2025 at 8:37 pmYes! One always gets sick at the worst time. Why is that???
Thank you.

April 5, 2025 at 10:06 amOh, San, that is such a bummer. But I really admire you for being so considerate of your friends. I wish more people were that way. Wouldn’t it be nice if employees could choose whether to work in the office or at home? Well, I hope you feel better soon.
San
April 5, 2025 at 8:38 pmThank you Michelle. I know I did the right thing for everyone – myself and my friends – but it was still a tough call to make :(

April 6, 2025 at 4:04 amOh, San. What a crap show this year has been for you. :( I am so sad for you and your lost weekend. I hope that you can find another weekend when you can see your friends. People coming in sick is the worst. And yes, you can blame the orange (expletive deleted) for this. RTO is stupid, quite frankly.
Hope you feel better soon and that your bolstered immune system protects you from the crap that people bring in.
Take care of yourself, my friend. <3

April 6, 2025 at 11:26 amI’m not sure what else I can add other than to chime in that this really sucks and, like everyone above, I’m so sorry. You have had such a difficult start to 2025. I know you’re a very positive person, but I know all these challenges must be so frustrating.
Sending hugs (wish I could do more). And I hope you’re able to reschedule something equally fun VERY soon.
San
April 9, 2025 at 1:17 pmThank you for the hugs (and your sweet messages).

April 6, 2025 at 12:21 pmSO sorry to hear this! Yes- we will definitely blame Voldemort. Hope you feel better soon. And, can you schedule another girl’s weekend somehow?
That book sounds good, and- he has a podcast? I’ll check it out!

April 7, 2025 at 11:47 amWhat a bummer that your plans had to be cancelled. Thanks for doing the right thing and staying home when you were sick, though.
Whenever I think I’ll stop and grab a bite to eat, I am HORRIFIED by the prices and just end up leaving and going home to enjoy a tiny feast there. LOL.
San
April 9, 2025 at 1:18 pmI am trying to be responsible – my coworker (not the one who gave the illness to me) texted me and said “thanks for staying home. Seems like you’re on of the few people who have learned something from Covid” LOL
Stephany
April 7, 2025 at 6:11 pmI was so excited for your fun weekend… and then I read that you had to cancel it. That is SUCH a friggin bummer. You’ve been dealing with enough lately. Can’t the universe give you a break?! I’m so sorry.
I should get that book about learning how to be better at conflict. My typical strategy is avoidance.
San
April 9, 2025 at 1:19 pmYeah, that was a bummer :( But I am trying to look forward now, not back… there must be something else that I can look forward to!
Let me know if you check out the book. Jefferson’s IG is super-helpful already!

April 7, 2025 at 9:04 pmI’m so sorry you couldn’t go on your trip, and BOO! to both *** and your co-workers who come in sick. GRRR! But more *** because inflexible rules make it likely that people will come into work sick.
San
April 9, 2025 at 1:20 pmThanks Melissa. It’s a bummer…. and WFH has its place!! Damn it.

April 13, 2025 at 6:40 am[…] I also needed that break. After feeling lousy over the weekend, the emotional disappointment about having to cancel my weekend plans, and the stress of the last few weeks all caught up with me. I am glad I took a little time […]
