Five Things Friday: just five things I’m thinking about or things that made my week, or things that I otherwise feel like sharing.
Just a quick little reminder for my Secret SANta Swap participants: I hope you all had time to shop for your swap partner and will be getting something in the mail soon-ish! And feel free to let me know when the swap packages start trickling in!

California was hit by a 7.0 earthquake this week, followed by a tsunami warning for most of the Northern California Coast. The epicenter was about approximately 75 miles southwest of Eureka. For my fellow scientist nerds, this earthquake occurred west of the Mendocino triple junction – the region where the Pacific, North America, and Juan de Fuca/Gorda plates meet. Not a surprise location for an earthquake. People apparently felt the shaking even in Sacramento. I unfortunately didn’t, but I got a message from my friend Susi, who lives in the Bay Area, that her phone was blowing up with alerts and a tsunami warning. Luckily, the tsunami warning was canceled about an hour after the main quake.

We had a Teams meeting with (almost) all members of my research group this week. Our new, temporary supervisor set up the meeting so we can all meet and connect. Even though it was virtual (because our group is spread out through the state), we all agreed it was a great way to “get to know” who is in our group and what they do on a day-to-day basis. This had not happened since I joined this group 2,5 years ago and it was nice to put faces to names that I had heard before. I also had no idea we had such a diverse and skilled group of people!

I am sad to inform you that Trader Joe’s Gingerbread Coffee has been discontinued. I went grocery shopping this morning and still didn’t see it on the shelves (and it’s December, 6 already!), so I finally asked an associate – bracing myself for what I knew was coming: they discontinued the product. I am so bummed.

CIM weekend is here! I cannot believe my 18-week training is over and I get to run a marathon on Sunday (yes, I said “get to” because how lucky am I to be able to run long distances!?). We are also lucky because there is no rain in the forecast. It’s supposed to be cool, but sunny on Sunday which are perfect race day conditions if you ask me!

December 6, 2024 at 7:59 pmSo glad the earthquake/tsunami didn’t affect you. Boo for discontinued treats at TJ’s! Hopefully they will bring it back in a future year.
And woo hoo!!!! All your hard work is about to be put to the test! I hope your race goes exactly the way you want it to!

December 7, 2024 at 7:33 amMy son came tearing into the office yesterday to tell me about the earthquake, and that there was a tsunami warning off the coast of Vancouver! I’m glad you’re okay but wowza, that’s a big one!
Too bad about the coffee! I hate when things I love get discontinued.

December 7, 2024 at 1:27 pmI’m glad the tsunami warning was canceler. Sheesh! How scary!
That is great that your new manager pulled the group together but it’s also surprising that hasn’t happened in 2.5 years! You must all have very different roles and not interact much? I am on a large team and we have a weekly call on Friday. TBH I’d like fewer team meetings because some people say some really stupid things and complain and it’s just not a fun call…
Good luck tomorrow!! I am so glad the forecast is great!! Can’t wait to track you from MN!!

December 7, 2024 at 3:27 pmI wish you all the best in your marathon! I can’t wait to hear all about it! I almost could’ve come to see it because I’m going to San Francisco on Monday for my eye checkup. But you’ll be all done and recovering by then, and of course, not that close to San Francisco. The earthquake sure has me nervous about going!! Hopefully everything will be calm and quiet!
Happy running, San! I’m cheering for you!

December 7, 2024 at 4:01 pmAHHH! Can’t wait to hear how it goes! You’ve put in all the work – time to enjoy!
I’ll come back and read the rest of this later, but HAD to comment on the race. Thinking of you!

December 7, 2024 at 8:52 pmGood luck on your run tomorrow. I’m sure you’ll do great. I’m so happy there is no rain in the forecast. Sorry about your coffee. I hate when things I love disappear. I swear every time we found a hair product that Curly liked when she was a tot/little kid, the company would stop making it. Drove me nuts. I’m glad your work group had a Teams meeting. What a great idea. Looking forward to hearing all about your run.

December 8, 2024 at 2:43 amI saw the earthquake warnings and wondered how you were affected.
Obviously I have never experienced one in Germany. I always wonder what it would be like but then you really dont want to be in an earthquake.

December 8, 2024 at 8:53 amI can’t believe your marathon is here! Or also that it’s been 18 weeks since you decided to run a marathon! Absolutely incredible to watch your training progress. Good luck!!!

December 8, 2024 at 10:29 amI was so happy to hear the alerts were cancelled a few hours afterwards as I have so many friends living down near San Fran. Oh, and good luck with the race though by the time you read this is may be over. IN which case, I hope everything went okay!

December 8, 2024 at 4:16 pmI hope your race went really well, and that you had a great time! The weather was perfect I think, except that the air quality here was not great. I hope it was fine there.
My daughter was working from home the day of the tsunami alert, but she said that people at her office (just a block away from the Bay on the flats in SF, near the ball park) were panicking and running out into the street. I asked her what she would have done if she had been in the office, and she said she would have grabbed her computer and gone up to the 4th (top) floor of her building. I’m glad she has some common sense! The alert was for our entire county, which made no sense at all, but maybe there’s no time to be more selective when it’s something like that. Did you feel the earthquake at all? We did not.
Secret SANta gift was mailed earlier this week, should get there soon!

December 9, 2024 at 5:56 pmI’m commenting late so I know that you KILLED THAT RACE!!! So proud of you, San!
Glad the earthquake/tsunami warning didn’t affect you guys too much!
