Five Things Friday Vol. 61

Five Things Friday: just five things I’m thinking about or things that made my week, or things that I otherwise feel like sharing.

Hi friends, I am back from travel. I feel like I’ve said that a lot recently. This year has definitely started out with quite a busy schedule for me, hence the infrequent and slightly disorganized posting on this blog. I hope you settle back into a more regular routine from here on out, as I don’t have any more travel – personal or work-related – on my schedule in the foreseeable future. I feel like I’ve been constantly playing catch-up lately (which is not entirely untrue). If you see some batch commenting these coming days, just know it’s me trying to get up to speed with your lives.

I noticed issues with blog posts not showing up in Feedly all of a sudden (yes, I subscribe to my own blog!) and I wonder if it had to do with my recent move to a new hosting server. It’s a far fetch as I moved my blog a couple of months ago and the RSS feed issues started happening while I was in Germany (and I didn’t make any changes to my blog during that time), but who the heck knows? You might not have noticed any issues yet (as my posting has been sparse), but if you did, there might be a fix.

TL;DR: If you’re not seeing my post in Feedly (or other RSS readers), try to update the URL to https://theinbetweenismine.com/feed/ and hopefully that will fix it for you.

The weather in Germany was lovely. On the cool side, with a couple of days of wind and rain, but mostly sunny with blue skies. I quite enjoyed it. Needless to say, I wasn’t quite ready to come back to 80+F/25+C. There was a distinct weather change in CA while I was away. It’s supposed to cool off again a little bit, but summer will be here before we know it. How is it almost May?

Getting back to my normal exercise routine has been interesting. Taking a break for two weeks and choosing activities that were different from what I usually do, was a fun change of pace, but my HR was through the roof when I got back on the Peloton earlier this week. I am sure jetlag was partially to blame, although I feel like overall it hasn’t been too bad (I haven’t been awake at odd hours and mostly slept through the nights). Does jetlag affect you much?

One thing I really missed this week was getting up and having breakfast with my parents. As cliché as it might sound, my Dad goes to the bakery every morning to get fresh rolls for breakfast and he asked me every morning what kind of rolls I wanted. There are a gazillion different kinds and I switched it up every day to get the whole variety while I was there: wheat rolls, rye rolls, multigrain rolls, seeded rolls, poppy seed rolls, sesame rolls, pumpkin seed rolls, etc.

And one of my favorites: müsli rolls. My mom bought me one at the airport before I left and I savored it for breakfast Monday morning upon my return. (Now I have to learn how to bake those myself.)

What’s been going on in your world this week?

  1. Hey San, welcome back!

I’ve noticed that a few blogs have a delay in showing up in feedly including one Big Deal blog that I follow, so it’s not just you. And on the flip side there are blogs that show up in feedly before they show up in my blogger reader so who knows.

    1. Oh, that’s good to know. Thanks for the heads up, Birchie.

  2. Oooh, muesli rolls!
Lots going on in my world this week, which I’m not putting on my blog but I can say here. We are moving in the summer to a different province and this week we listed our house for sale. So, a lot of work and emotions!

    1. I can imagine how much you must be processing right now, friend. Exciting, but also emotionally hard!

  3. Now I want muesli rolls! Fresh rolls for breakfast every morning sounds incredible. I’ll bet you’re just missing your parents in general- it’s hard to be apart after seeing them for two weeks.
But it must be nice to get back into a regular exercise routine. I think you’ll start to feel more normal soon!

    1. Yeah, this on again, off again with family is really hard. I do wish they lived closer – not a 10 hr flight away. Sigh.

  4. I had all your recent posts (5?) show up this morning, even though you had posted them on different days. I’ll try updating the link in Feedly. Though I actually enjoyed having a whole bunch of delightful “San” posts to read this morning <3

    1. Aww, thanks friend. That makes me feel better about the whole RSS mess-up!

  5. Thanks for the feedly tip. I am going to see if that works because all your posts came in at once and I was like, whoa! LOL

What a lovely tradition for breakfast with your parents! I love that!

    1. WordPress/Feedly seem to be weird – it doesn’t seem to be just a problem with my blog. I hope it resolves itself.

And thank you – having breakfast with my parents is my favorite :)

  6. I love bread in Germany!!! the seeded ones and fresh baked. I ate bread for breakfast/snack everyday when I visited my friend in Erding.

    1. Ha, that is NOT surprising to me :)

  7. I see your posts in Feedly if that helps you any!
I hope you had a great time traveling! It’s so difficult to get back into the swing of things afterwards, especially if jetlag is involved.

    1. Thanks for the feedback, Kristen. I am glad my posts are showing up (even if late).

  8. Yes, it can be really hard to get back into routines, but worth it to spend time with your family. You dad sounds like a gem. My dad has a routine in them morning where he goes out and gets the papers, a coffee and fresh bread.

    1. Aww, thank you Melissa. My Dad is a gem indeed… and yours sounds like one, too :)

  9. I am so glad that you mentioned the feed thing because I was going to tell you that I got no posts for a long time and then four all at once. I checked the date on your actual website and some of them were from a week ago! I did what you said with the feed reader and will see how it goes from here. I hate having blog/feed issues. I am a problem solver and I have trouble not being able to fix something, like I will stay up late to try to do it and sometimes I can go down a deep hole.

That bread! Of course, I do not know the names of any of the rolls, but when I am in Germany, I like the one with the oatmeal or the sunflower seeds on the outside and prefer the browner ones to the whiter ones. Other than that, I like the square shaped ones better than the crescent/oval ones. Usually I just point if I am in a bakery, or I go get them from a place where I can help myself (which I love)!

    1. Ha! I am the same way – I will stay up late to try and solve problems. I cannot sleep until I figure it out. It looks like it’s not my blog but WordPress and/or Feedly that is having problems, so I do hope it resolves itself. Keep me posted.

I don’t think you can go wrong with any of the German rolls – but I do prefer the darker, seeded rrolls myself :)

  10. About 4 posts all showed up in my feedly last Sunday so I am planing catch up! It’s so frustrating when you have tech issues with your blog. I recently realized I wasn’t getting blog comments emailed to me. I don’t think I am getting your comment replies anymore. I used to get them emailed to me so that might be related to the change in hosting services too. So annoying!

I have been traveling more too and it has really thrown my schedule off. I post so infrequently now. I am looking forward to things calming down!

  11. I know the feeling of playing catch up all to well these days. I am still contemplating if I should try or just jump in when I have time 😂

  12. I love musli rolls when traveling. Feels like a healthier choice than any croissant or Ditch snack.
We only have rolls during the weekend. But then we dont have breakfast on weekdays…

I haven’t experienced any missed blog posts but then I am not staying on top of things these days with moving again and all the drama that is involved. However, I realized that many posts show up as being published on the same day so … I don’t know. Something seems to be off.

  13. I also subscribe to my blog on Feedly! I like to make sure my posts are showing up and to see how they are showing up. I haven’t had any issues with your blog posts showing up for me!

Having breakfast every day with your mom and dad is so special. I’m so glad you have those memories, though they might feel bittersweet to remember right now. <3

  14. Ohhh, the daily trip to the bakery. Such a wonderful European tradition (for lack of a better word) that we have completely lost here in the US. I love that your dad checked in with you to ask what you would like *that day*. That’s a dad for you. :)
I also got several posts at once in Feedly but have been using your /feed URL for a while. Hmmm… Doesn’t bug me, but does mean that I read things out of order sometimes!
