Five Things Friday Vol. 60

Five Things Friday: just five things I’m thinking about or things that made my week, or things that I otherwise feel like sharing.

Last night, I returned from my 5-day work trip to the desert, which I had mentioned in my last Five Things Friday post. Management did allow me to go after all and I am just so glad I stood my ground. I left on Sunday, flew down to San Diego to pick up a field vehicle, and then drove to our work site in Desert Hot Springs. We had a really good week, workwise, despite some intermittent wind and rain. California is still not done with this crazy, wet weather, or so it seems. We just made the best of it. Our crew had a sense of humor about it all, and another cool perk of the week was access to some hot spring-fed mineral pools at our hotel that we took advantage of every night. Ever taken a dip in the hot tub with your co-workers? :)

On a different note, I am so ready for some home-cooked food. Eating out is nice and all, but if I have to do it for a whole week (or longer), it gets old for me really fast. I am craving something simple, prepared at home. Do you feel the same or could you eat out every day of the year, no problem?

I saw a full rainbow this week and it made me so happy. It was early in the morning after a night of rain and it was so beautiful. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get a picture because I was driving to my field site at the time and by the time I had parked, it had partially disappeared. It was still magical though.

Last week, I had my scheduled double screening procedure – the (follow-up) upper endoscopy and a colonoscopy. Fun! [/sarcasm] I know that last year I felt much more apprehensive about the endoscopy, but it turns out that the colonoscopy is the worse procedure of the two, mainly because of the prep work beforehand. Holy mother of hell, that laxative solution is nasty, especially after what feels like the gazillionth glass. I am just really, really glad I got these over with (and all in one go!) and that everything checked out well.

If you noticed any intermittent connectivity issues on my blog, I apologize for the inconvenience. I am aware of it and the reason is that I finally took the plunge a couple of weeks ago and moved hosting services. The back-and-forth with my previous hosting company was getting ridiculous and I was starting to feel harassed. It was time to cut ties and move on… but I am still working out the kinks from the migration of my site. If you notice anything else that is odd or not working, please let me know though. I am trying to get this all fixed asap.

I am ready for the weekend now. Anybody else?

  1. Do you feel the same or could you eat out every day of the year, no problem? I feel the same way. I don’t enjoy it. I miss my simple style of cooking.

I agree with you that a colonoscopy is far worse than an endoscopy. The whole prep thing is dreadful.

I like your rainbows and like I’m looking forward to the weekend. This has been one VERY long week for me. Happy Weekend!

    1. I am glad to hear others feel the same about too much eating out.

Happy weekend! I hope you get some much anticipated rest.

  2. TGIF! I definitely get tired of eating out faster than I get tired of eating at home.

    1. I am glad to hear others feel the same about too much eating out.

  3. I don’t typically eat out very often, but I would definitely get tired of it!

Gorgeous rainbow picture (which, I can see in Feedly, but not when I navigate to your actual website; but that might just be on my end)?

I’m so glad you were able to do the field work. Sounds like a tiring – but rewarding – week, despite the continued crazy weather.

I’m ready for the weekend…I think? My daughter turns 12 on Sunday and her party is tomorrow. Most of the (very limited!) prep work is done and I’m feeling mostly good about it. I find kid parties stressful, but we’ve purposely made this one extra low-key, which gets easier as the kids get older and she had VERY specific plans that were easy to execute (aside from making homemade cake pops which took 2 hours and might have shaved 2 years off my life…)

    1. Happy birthday to Abby! I hope the party went well… I can imagine it’s always a lot of work to put a birthday party together.

  4. It must be fun starting to get to get back to field work more after working from home for so long. I totally get the eating out thing. I did contract work where I traveled around for months at a time and lived out of a hotel and everyone thought it must be so glamorous but I definitely lived on coffee pot ramen for a while because I was tired of going out to eat (and did not have a fridge. Moral of the story, for long stays, get a hotel that has a fridge!)

    1. Oh, a fridge (and microwave!) is a must at hotels. We had group dinners at night, so I didn’t really opt out of dinner and made something in my room, but if I traveled more often, it would definitely become a real option.

  5. Field work sounds so fun – with rainbows and hot springs… I haven’t take a dip in a hot tub with co-workers but had to share a room twice (involuntarily) and even sleep in one bed with one – suitcases already dropped of at the airport so no night wear… fun. hilarious and a good story to tell.

Glad your doctor appointments went well. Doesn’t sound fun.

Conrad on moving hosting services… what an. endeavor. I only had issues posting comments due to database connection errors…

    1. Haha, so you do have some fun work related stories, too. I could not imagine sleeping in the same bed with a co-worker though.

Thanks for letting me know about the database connection error. I do hope that problem is resolved now, but if not, let me know!

  6. I can’t even imagine eating out every day. I mean, I guess I’d eventually just end up eating salad for every meal!

I also can’t imagine ever going to a pool at all with my co-workers! I’m just too much of a prude for that! I’m glad you got to go on the trip, though, despite the weather making it a bit more challenging than you wanted.

    1. Salad does become my go-to eat out meal as well.

  7. As much as I love eating out, I do get sick of it after a while, especially if I’m on vacation. At a certain point, I just want to eat a meal I cooked myself!

Glad you got to enjoy some fieldwork!

  8. Isn’t it lovely that we can have such little pleasures in life like seeing a rainbow!?
Sorry about the colonoscopy. I’ve never had one, but from what I hear that prep work is awful! But, it’s so important to have your screenings done, and totally worth it I’m sure.

  9. I have been in a hot tub with a coworker, also on a work trip! Yours sounds much cooler :)

I have a note in my post for tomorrow about eating out so much last week and how much I hated it. It’s fine on vacay but I felt so off last week. Ick.

Good for you for getting all that medical stuff done! I get to do my fist colonoscopy in a year+, yay.

  10. I will get a colonoscopy at 45 since we have a family history of colon cancer. I have heard the prep is way way way way way worse than the procedure itself. I am glad I have a few more years before I have to do it!

I’m glad your time in the field went well! Good for you for standing your ground on going along!

I’m in flight to LA now for work. I was surprised to see the highs will only be in the 60s. I was expecting it to be much warmer. I mean, I will take what I get. We got 9″ of snow in Minnesota over the weekend and will get more this week… so it’s still a much better forecast but I thought it would be warmer in April!

  11. *steps up on small soapbox* I’m SO glad you got your colonoscopy and that all looks good. Yes, the prep sucks. There is no other word for it. But I still think it’s so dang cool that we can prevent cancer from developing if people get them. Not many other areas of health care where we can say that, for sure.

I love seeing the pictures of where you do your field work. It is so, so different from what I see around here every day, and reminds me that our everyday experiences are shaped not only by our choices and interactions with people, but by the world around us. Despite the rain and chill, it seems like it was a lovely experience in a beautiful place. (I would have avoided the hot-tub-with-the-colleagues, though…. you are braver than I!)
