Oops, I skipped this post again in May. I am telling you, the world is “on pause” and “time lapse” at the same time. Let’s check in with each other.

WATCHING | my tomato and cucumber plants grow. I should have gotten them a while ago, but I still hope to be able to harvest something this summer.

LOVING | our little patio outdoor space. I said it last summer and I’ll say it again, especially admits the Coronavirus pandemic: I am so thankful we have our own, private little outdoor space that we can enjoy this summer (especially as any travel is put on hold for now). We finally had our first BBQ this week and it was delicious.

READING | White Fragility by Robin DiAngelo (as does every other person right now, I hope?)

HAVING | some really good conversations with family members and friends about what’s going on with the protests and BLM movement here in the US and I am thankful that people are not shying away from talking about it.

EDUCATING | myself as much as I can, watching videos and IG (live) stories and reading books and articles about white supremacy and racism. It’s a lot to take in, I won’t lie, but there is really no way around it.

FEELING | a lot of emotions right now that are connected with everything that is going on in the world. I am trying to process them and sit with them and work through them as best as  I can. I am sure many of you feel the same right now.

FRUSTRATED BY | the non-existent plan and guidance through this pandemic from this administration. It feels like there hasn’t been any coordinated, thought-through effort to protect the American population at large. The fact that many treat the reopening of many states as if the Coronavirus disappeared is infuriating, especially when you see the rising numbers of cases all over the place.

HOPING | that 2020 will turn out to be an outstanding year for the history books, even if it doesn’t seem to be so outstanding while we’re “living” through it.

EATING | Muesli with yogurt and strawberries for breakfast.

DRINKING | my morning coffee on the back porch. If you follow my personal Instagram account, you know it’s been my Corona-quarantine ritual since the beginning.

LISTENING TO | a couple of random podcast episodes that were recommended to me.

CRAVING | ice cream, because of course. It’s summer.

ENJOYING | my early morning runs. Besides grocery shopping, it’s the only thing I currently leave the house for. How about you? Have you been venturing out more?

(extremely) BUMMED | that my family, who was going to come visit next week, is – for obvious reasons – not coming. We had a whole three-week road trip planned this summer and I am so sad that we won’t be able to spend time together.  The kids had been so exited about the trip! Sigh.

TAKING | this week off of work anyway, even if Jon and I can’t go anywhere. I don’t think I’ve ever taken time off of work without using the time for some sort of trip (visiting back home, or with my family), but since I anticipate that we won’t be able to make any plans for quite a while, I’ll just enjoy being home and puttering around the house and backyard this week.

LOOKING FORWARD TO | my now-regular FaceTime sessions with my family. I didn’t used to be into video chatting, but ever since I knew I wasn’t going to see my family this summer, I’ve been craving this online face-to-face time with them so much.

TRYING TO | find the silver-linings wherever I can. (Where are my fellow glass-half-full-kinda-people? Raise your hands!)

And tell me: what is going on with you currently?

  1. Team half full reporting for duty! Where I live everything is pretty much open so we *can* do a lot but I would say that most of us are in “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” mode and staying home. Someone was talking about gas prices this morning and I realized that I’m clueless b/c I haven’t bought gas since March, which is just astounding to think about. I’m all about the simple pleasures right now, being home with my family, running and walking the dog, etc. That stuff never gets old.

    1. I totally agree with you about the “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” mentality. A lot of things have opened up here too, but we’re still staying home. I am kinda liking it right now.

  2. Team half full here!!!! But living with a team-member of the half empty team is rough sometimes….. !!
I’m sooo annoyed by my surroundings (not talking about my better half) – way too many people keep ignoring the mandatory mask situation and numbers keep raising. I’m so over it – do your part people!!!!

    1. Team half full – yay!

  3. Such a bummer that your family can’t visit this year. I hope they can reschedule the trip for next year but it’s hard to know if we’ll all have access to a vaccine by then. :(

I ordered White Fragility and look forward to reading it when it arrives. I also ordered Me and White Supremacy. I usually do not buy books but those are 2 books I knew I’d want a hard copy of, plus I think Phil will read one or both of them. Our library is making 4 antiracist books available for downloaded in unlimited capacity. I love that they are doing that.

I bet your tomato and cucumber plants will do great since you have such a long growing season in California! I just replanted some cucumber seeds last week so I am super behind. We’ll see if I get a good amount of cucumbers this summer. I had planted some a month ago but the seeds must have been old as they did not grow. I was happy to see some shoots when I stopped by to water at noon today. I can probably harvest my radishes and will need to decide if I want to plant something else in that space after I harvest them… we’ll see!

    1. I have gotten both books through the library, but I totally get what you’re saying – I definitely could see myself buying a hard copy because I can see myself referring back to these books a lot.

I remember that you had a very successful garden last year, so I hope you’ll have a nice harvest this year as well. I am hoping that our longer growing season will mean that I will get to harvest something, too :)

  4. Nice that you’re doing your morning runs!
Life here is pretty normal except that we visit friends outdoors, which is convenient in summer.
And of course, all our travel plans are gone. But compared to other things going on right now, that’s just a minor inconvenience. And it’s environmentally friendly, too. 😊

    1. Glad to hear that things are pretty normal where you are. Hope it stays that way!

  5. The world has gone crazy – though, really, it’s mostly that AMERICA has gone crazy. I hate seeing the Covid numbers rise again. People are just being so irresponsible and selfish. I don’t get it all. And I have White Fragility – hoping I can read that one soon!

I’m sorry your family can’t visit, but yay for Face time and I think it’s great you are taking a week off anyway. Sometimes you just need a break, even if you’re at home.

    -Lauren

    1. If there had only been one thought-through coordinated response to the Covid-crisis *rollingmyeyes* Sigh!

  6. This is the first year in forever that I did not have a plot in our community garden. May was so cold and wet here I just didn’t do it. I do however have a few tomatoes and pepper plants in containers on our deck. I will miss fresh cukes though. I am making a concerted effort to get outdoors as much as possible and really soak up summer before it disappears. Cannot believe it’s almost July already!

  7. I was thinking the same about how 2020 will be remembered in history and if future generations can comprehend how it was living through it. Probably not since we are not able to understand living through WWII. I am also trying to stay home as much as possible but had to do my first business trip last week. Next one coming week. I have mixed feelings. I need to find new clients and projects so many comes in but I would prefer it to be all remote work. And then somehow life can’t be on a stand still for 2 years. Argh too many feelings….
    Happy weekend

  8. I am so bummed to find out that your family had to cancel their trip. So disappointing. This pandemic is ruining so many plans, and it seems like it will continue to do so for a long time, ugh.

It is really strange to think about living in a time that will be in the history books. I try to think about that when I consider what I want to be able to say I did during the racial justice movement and COVID-19.

  9. I love that you are having important conversations around BLM and the movement. I think that’s the most important thing.

I can’t wait to see how this year is covered in the history books. I feel like students could probably dedicate a whole year just learning about 2020.

  10. This really has been quite a year! I’m so sorry your visit with your family was cancelled. But its better for everyone to stay safe.

  11. I know this is an older post (chronically behind) but I am so sorry about your family’s visit. Mine is not nearly as far away, just on the east coast. I still can’t see them, and probably not for at least another year. I hope that your family can come next year, but of course that all depends, doesn’t it? Just about finished with White Fragility and highlighted the heck out of it… glad I purchased it, and did the same with How to Be an Anti-Racist. Take care, and hang in there.

    1. Thanks so much for your kind words, Anne. I do hope you get to see your family soon again, too! We’re all in this together!
