EXCITED | to be back at work (at least temporarily, as it seems) after 5 weeks of furlough. Not going to lie though, it was hard to get up this morning. It’s amazing how fast your body adapts to a different wake-up time.

GRATEFUL | that we were able to weather the shutdown-storm and have felt less of an impact than a lot of other federal workers and contractors.

EATING | this absolutely delicious European bread that I found at the International Market. It’s really more of an Asian Market (I’d say 70% of the store is Asian foods), but they have a decent selection of other international groceries. I will continue to bake at home, but OMG, it is nice to have found a place again where you can buy a decent loaf of bread.

DRINKING | coffee. Looking forward to it every single morning.

WATCHING |  Salt Fat Acid Heat with Samin Nosrat. I came across this four-part documentary on Netflix by accident, but it’s super-intriguing (if you’re into cooking, which I am). I recommend you check it out. Samin also wrote a book with the same title that I am dying to read now.

READING | This is the way the world ends: How Droughts and Die-offs, Heat Waves and Hurricanes Are Converging on America by Jeff Nesbit. You guys, I haven’t finish this one yet, but everybody needs to read this. Science is real.

LOVING | the Californian winter. Cool, but not freezing, temperatures and blue skies! It’s the perfect season to run (when it’s not raining, ha).

WORKING |on my bullet journal.

PREPARING | for a potential work trip to Denver (which was canceled because of the shutdown, but now might be back on. I’ll find out in the next few days).

WISHING | I could be with my friend who is going through a hard time right now. Distance sucks, especially in these kinds of situations.

What’s going on with you currently?

  1. OK, that book sounds important AND ALSO TERRIFYING. I don’t know if I can…

    1. It’s really well written (and important)…

  2. I’m glad you are at least temporarily back to work! And that bread looks delicious! I’m sorry your friend is having a hard time and you can’t be there for her. I send lots of good thoughts.

    1. Thanks friend. I am so glad to be back at work, too (although it felt like “starting a new job today” LOL).

  3. Ooh, that book sounds really good. Do you think the science in it is easy enough to understand? Sometimes books like that can go completely over my head.

I am SO GLAD you are back at work, and I hope this isn’t just a temporary reprieve. Ugh. That has to be so stressful, but I’m glad it didn’t hit you too hard. Some of the stories I’ve heard are so heartbreaking and make me hate Trump so much more. He’s so goddamn heartless.

    1. Nesbit is not a scientist, so yes, the science is definitely easy enough to understand… and it’s very, very important for people to understand what’s happening with climate change, so we can all be better advocates for our planet!!

Thank you, I am also glad to be back at work. It was awful to be in limbo and for Trump to say he can relate to the federal workers was a plain lie, he can’t relate to anything that normal people go through.

  4. 1. Pure Pizza in Charlotte served free food to those furloughed. I wish we could have all done more!

    2. Those shoes SO rock.

    3. I’m currently watching The Good Place. I fell in love with Eleanor of course but have since become starry-eyed over Janet. (Yes, she’s a robot.)

Also, have you ever tried Netflix Roulette?

  5. Yay for finally being back at work, but yeah, I’d imagine it’s a bit of an adjustment waking up at a certain time again and just generally having to get back into the groove. I really hope the gov’t doesn’t shut down again, because it’s ridiculous. I’m glad you’re having nice weather! It’s pretty dang cold where I live, but that’s life in Kentucky. haha

    -Lauren

  6. That book sounds like an important read. Sounds like something that Phil and I would both enjoy (well, enjoy might not be the right word given the subject-matter, but you know what I mean!). I just started “Just Mercy” which is about the criminal justice system. It’s written by a lawyer that works with people on death row. It’s so sad and eye-opening. :(

I’m currently HATING the winter weather here. It’s going to be -15 today and even colder with the windchill. Our windchill tomorrow might be as bad at -55 or worse! Ugh. This kind of extreme weather is not super common, thank goodness. I think this is the coldest it’s been in 20 years. But it’s the worst weather. It’s downright dangerous to be outside right now so we will be cooped up indoors all week. It’s going to be in the 30s this weekend, though, which will feel tropical so I will definitely be going on some stroller walks with Paul!

  7. I LOVED Salt Fat Acid Heat – I thought she was so knowledgeable and so cute! And thank goodness you’re back at work!

    1. Oh, I am glad someone else watched Salt Fat Acid Heat! I like Samin a lot!
