Happy 145th birthday, Yellowstone NP!

On Sunday, I participated in another virtual 10k organized by VRC that benefits the National Park Foundation. You might recall, I also ran a 10k for the National Park Service’s birthday last year and I confessed my love for the National Parks and the outdoors.

This time the race was in honor of Yellowstone’s 145th Birthday. Yellowstone NP was the first national park in the US and it was established by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872.*

Yellowstone is one of the parks that I haven’t been to, but which is definitely on my bucket list. I want to see the Old Faithful Geysir, the Grand Prismatic Spring, and the buffalos!
But, I do love all the National Parks, I love the National Park Foundation and its work,  and it makes sense to run for a good cause like this. I mean, if I go for a run anyway, why not run with a purpose when possible?

I only found out about the race last weekend myself (I need to pay more attention apparently) and signed up right away. To be honest, I run as much for the good cause as I run for this awesome race shirt and the beautiful medal. I can’t wait for both items to get here.

Like last time, a portion of the registration fee goes to the National Park Foundation, so it didn’t take much convincing for me to sign up. And I think you can still join (the “official race day” is today, but I ran my 10k on Sunday already (that’s why I split my 9.5 miles in two parts last weekend – aha!) and I think you have until March, 31 to run and report your time.

Have you run virtual races for a good cause?  If you haven’t, would you consider running virtual races?

  1. I have not but I saw that it also says 5K on your shirt. I want to do it – you are such an inspiration.
Make sure you can cross Yellowstone of your list soon (maybe in May?)….. xo

  2. Oh, I love this virtual race idea, I’ve never heard of it! How awesome! Yay races! Yay Yellowstone! Yay that *awesome* medal!

  3. I’ve never heard of a virtual race! That sounds really cool. I like the idea of being able to run without the huge crowds.

  4. Not much of a race girl but I love your enthusiasm. And I love your support for the park system. There are soo many great ones and I have seen a ton on my three week travel around the states because my dad wanted to cross them off his list. Yellowstone is great but I personally found others more impressing. But than I am sure I never saw the full potential of the park.
    Have a great day

  5. This is such a cool idea! I didn’t hear about this, but if I had known about it and was running that distance, I could totally see myself doing this! So fun! I have not been to Yellowstone but really hope to get there sometime in the next several years. I haven’t seen many of our National Parks and really want to make an effort to see more! I’ve heard great things about Yellowstone. Our friends went to Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, and and Glacier last summer and Yellowstone was their favorite!

How are you liking your Garmin? Our models are very similar! I hope you like yours as much as I like mine!
