Our 15-year meet-aversary

Untitled

I just talked about my 15-year California-versary a few weeks ago and 15 years ago today, I met J. So, you do the math. We met right around three weeks after I arrived here. It would be a while until we became a couple, but I had no idea at that time that he would swoop me off my feet and that I would end up moving to the US permanently because of him. Our first encounter wasn’t quite the usual “girl-meets-boy-at-a-party” situation. I wrote about where we met here and how we met here.

We don’t really have a date when we “officially” became a couple, so we usually go by our “meet-aversary” date and we always try to do something special (wish usually ends up being a dinner date with sushi – ha!). Sometimes we go back to the exact same spot where we crossed paths so many years ago.

In all these years we’ve been together now, there were some up and downs and hard times, including a long-distance relationship for the better part of 3 years, and life hasn’t always been easy (is it for anybody?), but there has also been so much laughter and happiness and I don’t have a single doubt in my mind that I made the right decision way back when I said “yes” to this adventure.

I am still baffled that it’s been 15 years already.

How long have you been with your significant other? How did you meet?

  1. Woohoo – Congratulations to 15 years! That’s awesome. Especially in a time where people seem to take the “easy Way out”, aka Divorce, so quickly.
As you know, we just celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary. However, we were dating for 8 years before we got married.
I met my hubby when my dog and I needed some training – yes, he was my dog trainer. Three weeks later I flew to San Francisco to start my very first “Just-Me” vacation. He followed me! He flew all the way to the US to be with me and we haven’t been apart ever since. <3

  2. That’s crazy that you met so soon after arriving in the U.S.! I always love hearing how people meet. This week is actually my meet-aversary with Phil as well. We went on our first date on October 2nd of 2012. When people ask me how long we’ve been dating, it’s always a hard question for me to answer because we met and started dating in 2012, but then 3 months later I found out I was moving to Charlotte and we weren’t officially “together” when I was living there as being long distance was just too hard given all we were dealing with (I struggled with the move and his father’s health declined and he died in Aug 2013). But neither one of us dated during that time and we picked up where we left off when I moved back in May of 2014. So I kind of consider May of 2014 as when we started dating, but I say we’ve been in each others lives since Oct of 2012. Oct 2 is the only real “anniversary” date for us, though. At least until we get engaged/married!

  3. Congratulations on 15 years!!! As you know, Collin and I met 15 years ago as well. In fact, we first crossed paths two days after my arrival in the US in August 2001. Then we ended up in the same math class in high school and, after a few months of talking, went out on our first date to the drive-in the day after Thanksgiving on 23 November 2001. Now that we are back in WA, we are hoping to relive that day come this Thanksgiving. Luckily, the drive-in is still around and only a 10-minute drive from my in-laws.

  4. Yay, congratulations! I love that you guys met shortly after your arrival in California – guess it was meant to be! Glückwunsch! xxx

  5. I usually just read along quietly, but I started reading your blog many years ago when I was still in a long distance relationship with my now husband. We met in 2003 when I was an intern in North Carolina. My internship only lasted 10 weeks and so we ended up in a long distance relationship until 2008, when my hubby became an expat in Germany. We lived there together until 2010 when the company called him back to the US. We decided to get married (in a rush) before he had to move back and that’s how I ended up in Michigan. We have 2 kids now and have never regretted my decision either. I do miss my family back in Germany every day though and it breaks my heart that they only get to see their grandkids once or twice a year.

  6. Congrats!!! I love this!

When did J and I meet the first time? He was the best man in a wedding where I was the maid of honor. Ten years later we actually started dating when those friends who we stood up for set us up on a mostly-blind date.

    1. I suppose I could cut three inches out of my femur…then EVERYTHING would be long enough! :)

  7. Cograts to 15 years.
My husband an I met more than 34 years ago in a little bar in New York. We was both member of an international group which started a six week trip around the US on the next day. Three days before the end, Alex and I became a couple and the big question was, how to stay a couple back in Germany with 600 km between us. Today this is nothing but in these old days it was a lot. It was the times with no internet, only the phone and old style letters. And “the phone” means it was only one phone company and the price for a call from the south of Germany to Cologne was a very high one.
Back home Alex visited me every other weekend and from the beginning he searched for a work in my area. Three and a half month later, Alex was with work in Munich and an apartement in my neighbor town and we started our “ordinary circumstances” relationship. Six month later we decided, just out of the green, to marry and we did this in September 1983.
times was good with us, we are still in love and we mastered all the problems, life served us, together.

  8. Congrats to the two of you.
Hubby and I met during my internship at the company he works for in 2003.
We started dating in January 2004 and are together since June 2004.
We moved to South Africa together in 2005 for a good year, he stayed 7 month longer but since he is back we life together.
We got married 2011. So we have already 12 years under our belt.

  9. Congrats on 15 years!! We’re the same, it’s more of a meet-aversary than a specific date. Next year will mark 10 years we’ve known each other and started dating.
