11: Summer tales II – Tourist stuff in SF

I am recapping the wonderful times that I had with my family here in the States this summer. See all related posts under the category:  summer tales.

Today (7/11) we explored  the city some more. We had to – of course – do some of the touristy stuff with my sister, who only spent little time in the city, and BIL, who had never been to SF before.

First, we headed out for breakfast at “Honey Honey Café and Crepery” on Post Street. It was one of the cafés I hadn’t been to, but which a) seemed promising according to reviews I pulled up on my phone and b) was within walking distance from our hotel. We weren’t disappointed. It was pretty busy when we got there, but we got seated pretty quickly and they had delicious sandwiches, crepes and granola. Something for everybody!

Next, we caught the MUNI bus to Alamo Square, because if it’s your first time in San Francisco, you need to see the “Painted Ladies” for sure!

After taking the obligatory pictures, we hopped on another bus to the Marina District.

We enjoyed some time at “Crissy Field Beach” wit the perfect view of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was such a beautiful, clear day!

In the afternoon, we walked to Fort Mason, Ghirardelli Square, all the way to Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39, where I had booked us on an early evening Bay Cruise.

After we got our tickets, we had some extra time to kill and decided to visit the sea lions… only to be gravely disappointed, because just one or two lonely sea lions were hanging out at Pier 39. Unheard of!

Greta and Tom had clearly expected a few more sea lions after everything I had told them. Oops.

At 6 p.m., we went on board the cruise ship and spent a good hour out on the bay. The view of the city, Alcatraz,  and the Golden Gate Bridge were beautiful!  I know my BIL would have loved to see Alcatraz, too (which we had to skip because of time constraints), but I haven’t seen it either… in all these years, can you imagine?

Back at the shore, we decided on a tourist-y dinner at the Hard Rock Café… A) the kids were really hungry and B) because it was getting late again.

  1. I can’t believe you haven’t been on Alcatraz yet….. You need to make it a priority for 2016 – it’s so worth it!

    1. Ugh, I know! I can’t believe I havent’ been…!

  2. what you haven’t been to Alcatraz??? it is really cool. you defenitly have to do it!

  3. After you mentioned crepes, now I want one.

I love that photo of your sister and BIL wearing the mickey mouse shirts. Too cute!

    Now get thee to Alcatraz!!!

  4. Fun! You guys covered a lot of ground and saw a lot while you were in SF! That is a bummer that there were only 2 sea lions out! There are usually so many of them out there!!

I love SF so much. Phil has never been so I am hoping we can fit in a visit next spring.
