Friday Facts

March 14, 2014 filed under: Friday Facts

Today is my nephew’s 4th birthday and as always I am really bummed that I can’t squeeze his cute little face today.  How is he four already?? We got to talk on the phone this morning though and he told me about the shirt that I sent him in the mail (which he is already wearing in the picture!) and the inline skates that he got for his birthday. My Mom also made one of her awesome birthday cakes for him (pirate-themed – as requested. Ha!).

I had a appointment with a dermatologist this morning to finally get a skin cancer screening. I have a lot of moles and hadn’t gotten them checked out in a while. Luckily, it was all good news. None of my moles looks malignant. I am so relieved. I’ve been really good with using sunscreen (since I am very fair skinned and burn easily anyway) and I have always kept an eye on my moles myself, but it’s good to get a professional checkup on a regular basis.

Tomorrow I have a little girl date planned with my neighbor-friend. We’ll go thrifting and then to brunch. I am really looking forward to it.

Knitters, I need some advice! What are your favorite needles? I am planning to invest into a interchangeable needle set and I don’t know which one to go with. Cubics? Bamboo needles? Karbonz? Which ones are your favorites and why? Can you recommend any?

I am happy to report that my Dad (who was in the hospital for 1,5 weeks with a prostate infection) is back home and recovering well. He’ll have to have some minor surgery because his prostate is enlarged (not uncommon for man 50+), but it’s benign and something that can be taken care of. Phew. Thank you for sending positive vibes and keeping him in your thoughts.

Happy Pi Day (3/14)! I celebrated with ice-cream. Because that is just how I roll.

5 Foods I buy & eat every week

March 13, 2014 filed under: food

I’ve seen this kind of post somewhere on the Interwebs (I am sorry, I don’t remember where or I would give credit for the post idea – if you know who posted it, let me know!) and I thought it was a great peek into the every day life of a blogger. Besides, I am always interested to read about other people’s grocery and cooking habits. One of these days, I might break down our grocery shopping for you (if that is something you’re interested in), because I am constantly amazed about how little others seem to spend on groceries. However, I am not willing to compromise on certain things, so our grocery bill comes at a higher price and I am ok with that. Everybody has their priorities.

But I digress. Today, I want to talk about 5 food staples that make their way into my shopping cart every single week.

Untitled

Almond Milk

I could never ever go without milk, or dairy in general for that matter, but I’ve started substituting with Almond Milk and I am a fan. 1 cup of Almond milk has a third of calories of (1%) milk and it works for me for substituting in most instances that I would usually use regular milk. Trader Joe’s has original, unsweetened almond milk (without carrageenan!!) now and I buy it regularly. It goes into my steel cut oats, my granola, and I substitute it for half my regular milk in my coffee. (Maybe I’ll be able to switch over to 100% eventually, but as of right now, I am still liking my regular milk too much… it just adds a touch more creaminess.)

Untitled

Apples

I like a lot of fruits and eat various kinds during the summer months, but apples are my favorite (and strawberries. But strawberries don’t taste good year-round). I put them in my steel cut oats, on crêpes, or eat them just plain. Crisp and fresh. And you know, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’.

Untitled

Tomatoes

I love, love, love tomatoes. I’d say they’re my favorite fruit … or are they vegetables? (Google says that botanically tomatoes are fruits, but they’re considered vegetables for culinary uses. Aha!) Either way, I am a big fan of tomato salad, I like them sliced on bread and in any cooked form. Or, you know, just as simple snacks all by themselves. Grape tomatoes are delicious!

Untitled

Whole Grains

If you know me just a little bit, you know that I prefer a fresh slice of whole grain bread over ANYTHING else. I also love whole grains in any other form and so it comes as now surprise that I’ve started to introduce steel cut oats into my breakfast routine.

Untitled

Goat Cheese

It’s my FAVORITE. We use it in salad dressing (makes a nice creamy dressing mixed with the oil and vinegar) or just sprinkle it on top. I also use it in sauces or spread it on a fresh piece of bread.

What are five food staples in your fridge/pantry?

Photo of the week: Golden Gate’s little sister

March 12, 2014 filed under: my so-called life

Foto der Woche

It’s time for the ‘Foto der Woche‘ again and this last week was so beautiful in so many regards. It was gorgeous, sunny spring weather, I had a girl date planned last weekend (see previous post!) and yesterday was my birthday! What happened in your corner of the world?

Here is my Glücklichmacher #10

Golden Gate’s little sister (taken March 7, 2014)

Ha, did I fool you? Did you think that this is the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco? Not quite, but it sure does look a lot like it. This is Guy West Bridge close to my work and I took a stroll on my lunch break on Friday, because it was so gorgeous outside. The colors of the bridge and the sky were just competing for attention.

IWD and a fun weekend

March 10, 2014 filed under: friends, weekend

We couldn’t have planned this any better. My friend Susi and I met up for  a girls’ day out on Saturday and, unbeknownst to me, that  happened to be “International Women’s Day” (IWD). What an awesome coincidence.

Untitled

Susi had a day out sans kids which practically never happens and we met up in Walnut Creek for a day of shopping, pedicures and girl talk. The weather was beautiful and hanging out was just what both of us needed.

We had some fun sipping champagne and trying on super-expensive clothing items at Neiman Marcus. I honestly haven’t laughed as hard in a long time as when I was stuck in a $4500 (hideous!) white Chanel ruffle shirt. The store attendant urged us to try some things on (“have some fun!“), although she must have known that we were not going to buy anything. We did have our eyes on some gorgeous ($500) Chloé scalloped flats though. They’re actually on my wish list now.

We had a delicious piadina-lunch at Tomatina, did some shopping and finished the day off with a nice and relaxing spa pedicure. We both agreed: we should do this every Saturday! Ha!

Girl friends are good for the soul!

Other good things this weekend:

bread baking ♥ coffee ♥ Netflix ♥ knitting ♥ phone calls with my family ♥ tea ♥ getting out taxes done ♥ movie night ♥ meal planning ♥ Thai food ♥

How was your weekend?

Photo of the week: Sunset

Foto der Woche

Another ‘Foto der Woche‘ -Wednesday is here!
How was your week? Did you take lots of pictures?

Here is my Glücklichmacher #9

Photo of the week: Sunset

Sunset  (taken March 4, 2014)

I realized yesterday that I hadn’t really taken many photos this last week and was very thankful when this beautiful sunset presented itself to me just before I left the office last night. I work on the 5th floor and frequently work late, but those breathtaking sunsets right in front of my window surely make up for leaving the office after dark so often these days (can’t wait for DST to begin!).

February Birchbox

March 4, 2014 filed under: beauty

Untitled

I am a little bit late with my February Birchbox review. Last month I received box #1.

Untitled

Here’s what I received (*calculated value of the samples in parenthesis):

Untitled Untitled

Bain de Terre passion flower COLOR PRESERVING SHAMPOO ($1.51) and Bain de Terre passion flower COLOR PRESERVING CONDITIONER ($1.70): I am always looking forward to shampoo and conditioner samples, because I know that my hair frequently needs a change and this duo comes just at the right time. I am not a fan of strongly scented shampoos, but the passion flower scent is actually quite pleasant.

Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight SPF 20 ($3.20): This is a BB cream that promises to hydrate, illuminate dull skin, minimize pores and fine lines, and protect against solar rays. I really appreciate the SPF20 and it’s a nice size that you can pop in your purse for travel.

StriVectin-AR™ Advanced Retinol Eye Treatment ($25.50): I’ve heard about a lot about this eye treatment and people are generally quite happy with it, therefore I am definitely excited to try this. It’s on the pricey side and I hope it will deliver.

Previse HydroMilk™ ($4.08): For some reason, I am always drawn to products that have “milk” in their name. It just sounds luxurious, doesn’t it? This moisturizer has antioxidants, hyaluronic acid, and botanical extracts which fight all signs of aging. Essential fatty acids restore skin’s elasticity and the product is free of parabens, petroleum, silicones, and synthesized oils. I really hope I’ll like this.

The total came to $35.99 last month. Not bad at all. I liked all the samples that came in the box and am looking forward to trying them out.

Did you get a February Birchbox? What did you think of your product samples?
