Happy Halloween!

{via}

J and I are lame. We didn’t carve any pumpkins this year. I know! Unacceptable. Somehow October completely got away from me. I have no idea where the month went. We did watch a scary movie Saturday night though, does that count for anything at all? We’re planning to walk/drive through the neighborhood tonight and enjoy some of the fancy Halloween decorations. Yeah, yeah, we’re an old couple, shut up.
Also, I have no idea what has gotten into me, but I have agreed to watch another semi-scary movie with J tonight. Didn’t I just confess the other day that scary movies don’t really agree with me? What we do for love is amazing, I tell you!
I got some emergency candy in case we get some trick-or-treaters, whichI doubt tough, and will probably be stuck eating the candy myself.

So, do you have any plans for today or have you done all the partying last weekend already?

Like every year, I need to mention that the (Catholic parts of) Germany  should be celebrating, too, because “the term Halloween, and its older spelling Hallowe’en, is shortened from All-hallows-eve, as it is the evening before “All Hallows’ Day” (also known as “All Saints’ Day”)” (Wikipedia) which we celebrate in Germany on November, 1. So,  it only makes sense that Halloween should be celebrated in Germany (and believe me, these days, Germany has undoubtedly adopted Halloween traditions like carving pumpkins and scary movies, as well as the opportunity to throw parties and get drunk!), especially considering that  the next day is a holiday  and people can nurse their hangovers. How very convenient.

It does put me in a little bit of a sad mood thinking about “All Saint’s Day”, as it is also traditionally a family day in my family and I know that most of my family will get together. They’ll visit the cemeteries and our deceased relatives and then they’ll go home and have “Kaffee and Kuchen” (coffee and cake) and spend time together. I wish I could be there.

Have a spooky  Halloween everyone!

  1. I never knew it was a tradition here to visit the cemetery on November 1, or is that just your family? I’m not doing anything for Halloween, either, and I HATE scary movies… but maybe I’ll get some candy just for myself and mope about the fact that we don’t have Halloween trick-or-treating here. ;) I love pumpkins and Halloween decorations and this entire season but, as you said, October somehow came and went in the blink of an eye so I’m skipping all this and prepping for Christmas already instead. Heh.

  2. In Catalonia we don’t really do Halloween (even if the tradition is slowly sneaking in). We celebrate All Saints Day tomorrow as a religion holiday, but tonight we celebrate what we call the Castanyada. Basically we gather with family and friends to eat sweet potatoes, chestnuts and what we call panellets (which are sweets that contain pine nuts, potato, almond and sugar).

    Have a great holiday! :)

  3. I might forward this blog entry of yours to our pastor – because he greatly despises Halloween. And he’s not some old tattery guy… :)

Happy Halloween, tho. And don’t worry that you don’t celebrate that much – even Heidi doesn’t do her yearly party. ;-)

  4. If I’m honest, I’ll tell you I kinda hate Halloween. I hate really any “holiday” that requires a lot of planning and spending a lot of money for that day only. Dressing up in costume has to be one of my least favorite things. (So, of course, that’s why I’ve been blessed with a child whose birthday is within a week of Halloween – costume birthday parties, here we come!) We don’t really get too many trick-or-treaters, either, but my aunt and uncle do. This will be the second year that we’ll go over there, along with Gavin’s city cousins and some family friends, for a little Halloween party and to help hand out candy.

  5. I’ve always liked All Saints day.

  6. Happy Halloween! We’re not big on the holiday but we’re taking Topher trick-or-treating – in -13 temperatures, with snow. We’re nuts … but he’s so excited (and such a cute little Yoda!) that I can’t resist :)

  7. I am not a Halloween person at all. I love pumpking seeds, but not enough to go to the effort of carving a pumpkin. So I guess I am kind of boring! I love seeing my nephews and niece’s costumes, but that’s about it! I did go to a Halloween party this weekend which was really fun, but that’s the first one I”ve attended in over 10 years!!

I will be ‘celebrating’ All Souls Day tomorrow by attending mass, but that is about it!

  8. Thank you for sharing so many details about the German holiday! It’s so interesting! I love the idea of having a day off after Halloween :)

Hope you had fun celebrating this year!

  9. I agreed to watch a scary movie with Chris, too. ONLY because it was Halloween. Seriously, the things we do for love! :P
