Easter weekend

I have to say, holidays are always a little tough for me. Not being able to spend time with family on holidays is really something that weighs heavy on my heart time and time again and I don’t expect it to get easier any time soon. While my whole family gathered at my parents’ house for an Easter Egg Hunt for Greta and Tom…

Tom and Greta, Easter/Ostern 2011

I was packing boxes and at least managed to bake some Easter goodies on the side.
I usually bake an Easter Bread every year, as you might recall, but I wanted to try something different this year.
So I decided to make little Easter knots with sugar on top instead.

They were pretty good, although they didn’t turn out quite as I wanted them to, because a) I messed up with the flour again (I can never seem to find the right kind) and b) I had to improvise with the sugar on top. I was looking for “Hagelzucker” (“hail sugar” = crystal sugar), which is hail-sized sugar crystals which are commonly used for baking in Germany.
In the US? No such luck. I went to four different stores and raw cane sugar was the closest match that I could find. I guess the taste was pretty similar, it just didn’t look as pretty. (If you have any tips on where to get Hagelzucker, let me know!)

How was your Easter weekend?
Did you get to spend time with your loved ones?

  1. These do look super yummy, though! :) And I hear you about the flour… Whenever I’ve been looking for the right kind abroad – be it in the US, Sweden, or here in the NL – I cannot seem to get it right. It’s one of those things that just boggles my mind because- the packages *are* labeled after all. And I do ACTUAL RESEARCH beforehand. And then STILL, it turns out to be wrong. *shakes head* A mystery.

Sorry you were feeling a bit down about being away from the family over the weekend. :/ I take it for granted all the time that I can go back home in a matter of hours, and I know I really shouldn’t.

  2. Well, they look delicious to me! :)
    Happy Easter!

  3. That really looks yummy! I’m sorry you weren’t able to be with your family for Easter…I can’t imagine how hard it must be to go through that and be so far away from home. You’re a brave woman!

  4. oh man die beiden süßen sind schon soo groß geworden..wahnsinn! und das brot sieht delicious aus :) frohe ostern!

  5. Aw, they are super cute!!!
And those dough knots look delicious!!!
    Happy Monday xxx

  6. How long until your parents come to California? Is there any chance that your sister and her family might be able to come for a visit? It is so hard when we miss our family. I was missing my sister too. We may only live 4 hours away but our responsibilities keep us apart. I sure missed her yesterday.

    1. My parents will be here in 89 days! I really can’t wait. I won’t see my sister and the kids until Christmas though…. that’s a tough pill to swallow :(

  7. Yum, these look awesome! I wonder if maybe a reader of yours happens to live near a German bakery or grocer? Maybe someone would send you some of the things you’re looking for!

  8. Those look amazing!! I always have trouble getting my dough to rise as much as I want it to. I like my breads really fluffy.

  9. Wow those look awesome! I make something similar around Christmas called butterhorns. They’re incredible. You’re making me hungry! Haha

  10. ach süße, i’m sorry you were homesick on easter :*(
your baked good look delish again – as usually – and i hope the anticipation of soon having a new, beautiful place is helping a little bit with the missing home thing. i’ll call you soon! are you working again?

  11. Missing out on Holidays with your family is definitely no fun :( If only we could trade places for a day :) Those easter knots look amazing. What kind of flour did you use? Sounds like I need to bring you back some Hagelzucker!

  12. I’ve never used that type of sugar but I wonder if it can be found online somewhere. Seems like you can find just about anything out there!

Those knots still look delish :)

  13. Die Brötchen sehen super aus ;) Und dann willst du Mohnbrötchen? Das kann man ja fast nicht glauben ;)
    Liebsten Gruß ;)
