Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey and Highway 1

Wednesday morning, we left San Francisco on Highway 101 and drove to Carmel-by-the-Sea and Monterey. First we took a stroll through the downtown area of Carmel, a small town with an artistic history on the Monterey Peninsula.

Then we drove the famous 17-Mile Drive, which is a scenic road through Pebble Beach and Pacific Grove that hugs the pacific coastline and passes golf courses and big mansions. We stopped a few times on the way, visited some of the golf courses [my Dad likes Golf!] and enjoyed the beautiful views of the coast.

The most famous scenic stop on this drive was the „Lone Cypress“, which sits on a rock on the coast.

We followed the road up the coast to Monterey, checked into our hotel and then drove down to the “Cannery Row” that was made famous by John Steinbecks’ book of the same title.

Here you can also find the original “Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Restaurant” which opened in 1996 and was inspired by the movie “Forrest Gump”. It is the first theme restaurant inspired by a movie. We had dinner there and it was so yummy :)

Afterwards we took a walk on the Fisherman’s Wharf Pier of Monterey and enjoyed a beautiful sunset.

The next morning, our journey took us on the long drive south on the famous Highway 1, which hugs the coastline of California. We stopped at a supermarket after breakfast to buy some fruits, baguette and cheese for a picknick at the ocean.

The drive was fun and we were really lucky, because it was a clear and sunny day and the views of the coast were just exceptional.

We stopped many times along the way and enjoyed the beautiful views from the vista points. In San Simeon, we visitied the sea elephants that inhabit the coast during the summer months.

We took a break and had our picknick at Pismo Beach and then stopped at “Pelican Point”, a ledge that was named for pelicans that rest on it. We could walk up to them very closely.

Finally, we reached Ventura at around 6 p.m. and decided to make a quick stop at the Outlet Center in Camarillo. My Dad and Basti were obsessed with the Outlets :)

We had dinner at “Sizzler’s” and then drove to our hotel, the Clocktower Inn.
